    Oh definitely make a video about taxes, utilities, rent etc. I'm looking into moving there and it would be very helpful to see what is to be expected.

    Measuring the absolute cost, the city I live in is actually a tiny bit more expensive than Tokyo, even though it is actually still pretty cheap for a German town of largeish size. There is an online tool you can use to calculate your cost to live in different places, which we used to find that out. However, after seeing that the average income of an engineer is about half as much in Japan, Tokyo quickly seems quite expensive again.

      @00ask76 Місяць тому

      Tokyo is one of the cities with the greatest income inequality in Japan.
      Probably on minimum wage they will spend most of their income on rent and food.
      But, well, it's also a city where you can make money if you have the skills to earn a high income.
      Because it's the capital and economic centre of Japan.

    Thanks for sharing the typical daily life stuff. I think that's great for people to see. It's not all anime and temples and sushi every day. I used to just think of ¥100 as $1 in my head when I lived near Osaka years ago. That's essentially how it's treated as a local. So, not considering the current exchange rate, which is always changing, it felt like you spent roughy $300 for a week. That's not too bad.

    Alison, what is your marginal tax bracket %, and rental cost for a comparable studio in your area?. Likely cost of living is similar to Toronto but I’m curious about your tax and rental price . A studio in central Toronto will likely be $247k yen… If you crave sugar eat animal fat, sugar craving will go away….

    i dont think it makes sense to include the residence tax if you're not going to include things like rent, health insurance, etc. either include all of the big, repeating expenses or none at all imo.
    but this was an interesting video! you spend a lot haha. im a student here so i spend way less because i dont have a job. other than rent, 95% of my expenses are on food, probably upwards of 2000yen a day. but i eat a lot.. 2 meals at home and 2 outside. other big expenses are 8000yen a month on the gym and my 6 month commuter pass.
    i relate to the extra expenses when going to the office. back when i lived in canada and worked, on office days i would spend around $10 on lunch and another $3 on coffee. and the round trip was an additional $15. wfh is so much cheaper because im not allured into spending money on things i dont need to spend money on (e.g. i can make coffee and food at home)

    Fellow internet corespondents: Be advised that Japanese currency, bills/notes were recently replaced with "new" money. So some vending machines, particularly those at filling station only accept the old notes. Seems it costs upwards of a million yen to convert them to accept both the old and new notes. So thanks a million Bank of Japan, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

    A Brit male with the grunge look wouldn't dream of paying those prices. A cheaper price is a phone call away or round the corner. 11,000 for a pair of shoes; gimme a break. If I paid 4,000 yen I'd think I'd been ripped off.
    As example, a 70cl bottle of Cutty Sark in C... z Home is 980 with tax. In the supermarket the self-same product is 1420 plus tax. OTC medication is a lot cheaper too.

    • @cecetoday5440
      @cecetoday5440 Місяць тому +1

      Resident tax ("juminzei" or 住民税) is for all those living in Japan and who are eligible to pay. I.e. employed people or people earning a certain amount. It's not just for foreign residents. Depending on whether or not you have to file your own taxes it's either taken out of your salary every month, or you get slips to pay at the convenience store.
      If you're an employee at a company, you'll pay something called "unemployment insurance" (雇用保険).
      I'm not too sure of the details for taking it out. But I'm pregnant in Japan at the moment, and this insurance will cover my maternity and child care leave once I have my baby.
