Rare interview with Mike Mentzer from 1991, shortly after he started his personal training career. Interestingly, a year or so later he discovered that the program he had used in his competitive days was too much for many of his clients and began to scale back the volume and frequency and to analyze the data from his clients' workout charts. Topics covered: Different training approaches, genetics, what to look for in a personal trainer, the effects of steroids, his competitive bodybuilding career.

Yep. However, we can safely say looking back that he was wrong about the advancement of competitors' physiques. This was in 1991, just on the cusp of the "mass monster" era, started by Dorian Yates' 4 Olympia wins. The human physique since that time has become increasingly larger and more grotesque in some ways through the increased use of anabolics, HGH, and the real killer known as insulin.

Back in the late '70s I had a chance to meet Mentzer at Gold's in Venice. While not a regular there, he was becoming well known in the sport, in spite of having to quit training for three years due to a shoulder injury. HIs comeback was outstandingly quick. He had a intellect about the sport that most who competed didn't. Most of what he espouses, bodybuilders today should be listening to. Gone way too soon. RIP.

Pure genius Dorian Yates, 6 time Mr. Olympia was the first mass monster who trained using Mentzer's principles. Unfortunately since Mike's death bodybuilders have gone back to training with high volume instead of high intensity and trying to improve their recovery with massive doses of drugs. Most BB fans would agree that the bodybuilders of the 1990s looked better than the bloated pros of today. The nineties were heavily influenced by Mentzer's training ideas with shorter, infrequent, but highly intense workouts. It could well be that Mike Mentzer was the last voice of reason we will ever hear in bodybuilding.

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines You're wrong. Yates was a 90's bodybuilder and he used very few warm up sets for safety purposes as he trained with incredibly heavy poundages. Your vitriol is baseless and childish. Why not go back to the gym for one of your "six sessions a day" "Bulgarian Weightlifting" (lifters all banned for steroid use) system?

It is weird that some of these account that troll HIT or Mike’s video footage purposefully go to these videos and comment again and again about how much they disagree with HIT. I get it, some people prefer volume routines… I don’t recall any stories about Mike (or John) standing at the entrance of Gold’s trying to get people kicked out for doing a second set. Doug McGuff’s son trains with volume-Doug’s OK with it, their relationship survived, lol. I personally hope to learn more about how to implement HIT, which becomes more essential as I work through some heavy coursework and 60 hour weeks.

@@Gunshow0 First up are you comparing yourself to say a bodybuilder using large amounts of steriods or do you have little to no gains for your time spent in the gym? A natural lifter can make good gains if training properly but even then will not compare to say a Mike Mentzer or a Dorian Yates. Not having a go at those using steriods as i had a few years back tried them for 10 weeks but realized that they weren't for me. Mike Mentzer was about not training for volume, keep your workouts short and intense which i decided to do many years ago but i should mention some other aspects of my training that me and the other people who i lifted with used to make some very good gains. First up with training intensity we found forced reps where actually counter productive and a waste of your bodies energy, you'll know when you cannot complete another rep under your own steam and that is when you need to rack the bar. Have 3 to 5 minutes rest between sets, none of this 1 or 2 minutes rest between sets. If you want to develop larger muscles the best way to go about this is to get stronger, who will have a bigger and stronger upper body someone who military presses 100 pounds for say 3 sets of 8 reps taking only a minute rest between sets or someone who can military press 200 pounds for 1 rep taking an adequete amount of time to recover between sets in order to recover enough strength to lift heavier weight. I would also strongly recommend getting hold of a book titled "Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik" if it's still published, it is without doubt the best training book ever written for a natural lifter wanting to gain strength and size. The major problem many trainers have faced for some time now is that they follow the routines that top competing bodybuilder use, the issue here is these top bodybuilders use large doses of steroids for there gains and do exercises that may work for someone on steriods but normally have little or no benefit for someone lifting naturally, ie most people in the gym do waaaay to many isolation exercises instead of compound movements and its the compound movements like squats, standing presses, bent barbell rows, dips chin ups, powercleans, deadlifts that if done heavy and in GOOD FORM will get you stronger, breathing heavier and following that muscle size will increase. Most people training in your standard commercial gym do about 90 to 95% of their exercises lying or seated on a comfortable padded seat or bench instead of standing (their pretending to lift weights) It should be the other way around for more productive gains.
Your not happy with your progress and if this sort of training appeals to you you should if you can find a good powerlifting gym where the basic exercises are the norm and machines are none exsistant or kept to a minimum and learn to train heavy on the compound movements with good technique. Because really getting bigger and stronger ain't rocket science or it shouldn't be but unfortunatley their are plenty of so called experts out their these days that want to convince you otherwise.
I'll also add that i hardly consider myself an expert but i have trained since 1987 and cutting the duration down in my training but upping the intensity like Mike Mentzer advised and then reading Brooks Kubik's book Dinosaur Training (get that book if your serious) got me in my early thirties as a natural lifter a 410 lb squat, 305 lb benchpress, 600 lb deadlift, 175 lb standing military press, 400 lb for reps bent barbell rows, 255 lb power clean, 170 lbs strapped to my waist dip, 110 lbs around my waist chin ups, farmers walks with 200lbs in each hand and lifting a concrete ball of 160 lbs to my chest. Measusements upperarm 17.4 inches, chest 47, upper legs 25, on a 34 inch waist. Not meaning to blow my own trumpet here (well maybe a little) but this is what can be achieved as a natural and more with proper training. Heck i trained with other men who could squat 500 lbs, bench 400 lbs and military press 200 lbs and they where also natural and followed the advice from Brooks Kubiks book.

Hi John, Thanks from a lifelong gym owner and bb for 50 yrs , in West Australia.
Your vid with Boyer Coe and MM took me back. Thats exactly how I trained in the 70s when Nautilus came to Aus, except I would record 1/4 reps. I treated each set like yiu would a 100m sprint with a stop watch...very precise. The mental concentration was equivalent to a yogi ?..
Of course, all my years of coaching and only a handfull of people actually believed it was possible to make gains.

The real truth is Weider screwed Mike in 1980. He simply was better than Arnold that year. However, politics played a HUGE role that year...I don't think Mike ever got over the heartbreak of that. A real shame and it brought down the legitimacy of the sport at that time. Research this and you will see. R.I.P.

Five of the seven judges were longtime friends and associates of Arnold and four of them blindly voted for him because of that. (One to their credit did not choosing Dickerson instead.) But four of seven out of the gate ensured the fix was in.
And I suppose it is *merely a coincidence* that the three judges not in the can for Arnold voted for Mentzer over Arnold by roughly five points whereas the four judges who rated Arnold so highly also rated Mentzer about twenty points lower?
Arnold was not top *8* material in 1980 let alone a deserving winner. I say this based solely on his physique displayed on that day. Those who tell you otherwise are liars. It does not matter what Arnold looked like in 1973 or 1974, how many Olympias he had won, or how popular he was. Only what he looked like in Sydney on that day but what he looked like that day is not what was being judged. And that is why the 1980 Olympia will always be a joke and 1981 was no better. Bodybuilding has never recovered and is taken less seriously than any other sport out there as a result which is a shame because it did not have to be that way.

But two things he was wrong, first bodybuilding standard were ready to explode right in the following years and the first example coming to mind is Dorian Yates. For sure, a lot of this improvement is due to drugs and hormones. Second, steroids can for sure affect sterility and the so called "steroid rage" is in fact very true. Especially if someone is lean toward alcool and other drugs as well. Btw I'm training natural since 30 years, so I know exactly where my limits are in terms of muscle size and strenght.

Two factors (I have been a gym owner and coach for neary 50 years). One is the overwhelming number of bbs at the top level over do it, so even those who give it a try do it half heartidly. They basically just do less sets, but vey few know the difference between hard exercise and training. Even Dorian when interviewed a few years ago was asked what would he do differently, even after he discovered h.i.t, and his answer was " I would do far fewer sets" so even with his success and background , hebdid too much. One consequence is injury...very common today.

@@Nicholas19823 Thats why machines are su0erior for hit. Psychologically, you can dig deeper without the instinctive fear of serious injury.
I still train that way in my 72 year with all the natural hormonal benefits.

@@bigfletch8 yes I know what your saying, do you always go to positive failure every workout? How many days a week do you train?

@@Nicholas19823 Yes, that plus hiit to max out my heart rate on a cross trainer. At 72, that should be 148 bpm but occasionally take it to 170. Resting is sometimes as low as 28 on waking.
My warm up is the first five reps of the set. I never stop if I can get another rep. Been that way since my 30s. About 4 to 5 sessions per ft night.

Mike speaking on growth hormone is crazy, to think it wasn’t so long ago that these substances were still new.
