    I'm looking forward to the video you do when you get the bike back. You're going to be so pleased with how it runs, it's going to feel like a different bike!

    You can always do an outside clean once they're installed and working well. The insides seem to fine already. Some Naval Jelly, old toothbrushes, a good brand of saturated polish wadding ( I use Eagle One Never Dull here in the States ) and very fine steel wool, used lightly, will make almost all of the visible area clean. A light coat of WD40 afterwards and they will look just like your other carbs. I do this often with good results. Perfectly clean carbs that don't work well are only good for a bike you're never going to ride. Good luck and Ride Safe..

    This is "Hitachi cancer", Pep. Those carbs are difficult or expensive to fix them properly as they stopped making them 30 years ago.
    1988 and later XV-s have Mikunis which are much better and much more stuff is available for them.
    They are also not too expensive to get second hand. The linkage system is a better design, too.
    If your Hitachis are the newer ones (82 and later) you can keep the rubber intake boots as those are compatible with the Mikunis.

    • @wrod7
      @wrod7 5 років тому

      can i use 88+ xv mikunis on a 82 virago? would it fit properly?

    • @davidbalogh3845
      @davidbalogh3845 5 років тому

      @@wrod7 Sure. The engine barely changed between 81 and 99. The intake boots might be different, check your carbs if they have the later lip design (pics below in my other comment).
      Worst case scenario you need two rubber intake boots, too. Tourmax makes them, 50 dollars and top.notch quality.
      Mikunis have push-pull throttle cable attachment on the carbs. Don't worry about that, use just the pull side. The Mikuni's spring is hefty enough to pull itself back to idle without a push cable.

      @Gary Tesla I have had 3 XV bikes (700, 750, 1000) so far, first thing I did was this conversion. Sold the Hitachis on ebay, bought Mikunis and fitted them. Keep an eye on ebay or if you have a Facebook account join the Virago Owners Club, tons of good info and a few bike breakers there form the states as well.

    I checked your video and by the looks of it your clean but non-working carbs are Hitachi v1 carbs, the junkyard carbs are v2.
    They have different sealing lips. The junkyard carb has the conical lip which is Mikuni compatible.
    The clean ones are the early type, they have the groove and no lip.
    Can't attach a picture here so here's a shared link. Hope it makes sense.

      @Gary Tesla For starters compare the carb throats, the sealing interface like discussed above. If they are identical then yes, all you need is the 750 jet kit because 920s were jetted differently.
      If the sealing interfaces are different you need intake boots as well.

    Like you, I had to buy another set of carburetors because of the linkage system. It's good that you realize it's not running well and you have a specialist who knows how to regulate these Hitachi carburetors, maybe you tell as some initial adjustments and then where can we make adjustments, if your jets are different from one cylinder to the other.....good luck with that

    Hi , i have had the worn linkage troubles on the Hitachi carbs more than once , once the rear cylinder starts to run rich and you cant balance them any more due to worn connecting parts then they are done :/ there are also very few jets that fit them as well . the late model Mikunis and matching inlet rubbers are the way to go . much more tunable and less hassle . At the moment i am fitting a 1-2 carb manifold on my XV 750 rigid chopper using just the right side Hitachi , which has been modified to take Mikuni slot jets ,

      Do you know which model and modelyears Mikuni will fit this '81 750?

      @@chiefpepdesign #hi , im not sure about early (1985) model twin shock SE models , yes there was a twin shock called the SE , that has cased some confusion in the past for people ordering parts , but the later model flat slide twin shock carbs and intake rubbers will fit and fuel correctly , these models all have the same camshafts ,and jetting is much easyer , the adjustment linkages dont give trouble , i have done this a few years ago but dont own the bike any more . remember these parts are now getting very old...

    Hey Chief Pep. I was following your cafe racer build but somehow missed out on how you handled the electrical system. My bike, 1996 Xv1100 has a messed up Tci (igniter-sparkbox). I am trying to study now what option to take. I see 2 companies that make Tci's Ignitech and RegulatorRectifier. I was hoping thatyou could give me some guidance. Wondering if you upgraded your electric system or stuck with stock. If you go to Viragotechforum and review my engine swap post, my i.d. is Arjay.
    Your advice appreciated.

      I would stick with the original one! I choose not to go with the plastic one, since no one can figure out which lip of the plug has what color... The metal ones have the wires on them. You need those as a reference.

    • @RJSoftware2000
      @RJSoftware2000 4 роки тому

      Ah well, you lost me on that reply. Can you send me a link to plastic one you talking about?

    • @RJSoftware2000
      @RJSoftware2000 4 роки тому

      If you mean older metal cased tci better than plastic, that must be extremely hard to find. In 1990 Yamaha changed from 2 pickups to 1. My 1996 has only 1 pickup. So older TCIs I think with metal cases might not work unless there is a work around to make it work. I dont know.
      Another issue I have is trying to figure out what this one diode is that I found broken in my wire harness assembly.
      I see it in Clymer book page 281 connected to green wire right under fuel sender. In the xv1100 wiring diagram.
      If you could please take a look. The diode was in 1/4 inch neoprene tube inside wire harness and hooks to gas tank fuel sender by green wire.
      I need to replace that diode once I find out what it is. Hooking both leads bypassing diode makes low fuel light come on. But it is not the fuel sender. That part is in tank and uses a thermister.
      I dont want to direct wire it as who knows what it will do.

      @@RJSoftware2000 maybe good to watch my wiring video's. I've spend hours and hours to make those to tackle all these questions! 👍
