  • We recently welcomed Michael Marshall-Clarke to Bridge Classic Cars.
After purchasing his 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow from us just over 4 years ago, he returned to talk about what he's been up to since, where his love of cars came from, and he also showed us around his stunning car, Auric.
This is Talking Classics with The Man With The Golden Roller, Michael Marshall-Clarke.

It’s lovely to see my old car being enjoyed so much. I still have all the old photos of the body restoration and still have the original front number plate in my garage.

I bought a 1970 Silver Shaddow and colour silver many years ago. The day after I had taken ownership, I climbed in and as I drove it out the driveway, all I could see was car oil. I had to hire a car for a week while it was being fixed. For the next two years the car was in the garage at least one week every month. What soon followed was a problem with the hydrolics and needed Watnut oil which cost a fortune in order to make the car stand even. When the oil drops the front of the car looks up towards the sky. Then one day the car would not switch off at the petrol station.
One way round this was to pull out a wire. It needed a new small little box that cost the price of entry level new cars. The last straw was when
I drove over a small pot hole which caused one of the engine mounts to break and snapped the entire steering wheel colum. I bought the car from a dealership named Pinlane motors which was the name of the assembly line that the Shadow rolled off from. Of course it came with membership club but I did not meet many people who had not had dreadful problems with the hydrolics. It all sounds so wonderful and luxurious but the the car is totally unreliable and hugely embarrassing. Every time I got behind the wheel my heart missed a beat because
I never new if it would even start. In the country I live it is most unlikely that you will this model on the road. In fact the same applies to all the older models. We do have many new models on the road but they just don't have the same "classic finishes" and it is very difficult to differential between a Rolls or a Bently?, Which I never liked.

I have owned a 1986 SZ but it's the Shadow that caught my eye one day, so I purchased a 1975 Shadow, and now a 1973 Corniche 2 Door in Bourdeaux
