Q50S Hybrid 0-60 In 4.63 Seconds (Part 2)

  • Video explaining how I achieved a 4.63 second 0-60 run in my 2014 Q50S Hybrid. I didn't mention it it the video, but after you blip the throttle in manual mode to get the engine to turn on press the brake pedal only as hard as you have to get the car to stop. Pressing too hard will tell the ECU to turn the engine off again. Sometimes even with light pressure the engine will turn off and the car will go back to EV. In that case, just blip the throttle again and repeat pressing the brake as light as possible with just enough pressure to get the car to start. Usually no more than 2 times is needed to get the engine to stay on at a stop. Also, I apologize for having the phone in my right hand that I had to use to hit shift paddle, which didn't make for the best quality.

    Never was much for the 1 foot rollout. 0-60 is "zero" to 60. not a few mph-60. Most mags will note their 0-60 time "with 1ft rollout". Some do an actual real zero (stopped) to 60mph. Either way, the run in the vid from stopped to 60mph (0-60) at 4.9 sec is still sweet. Love that it hits 60 in pretty much one shift. Love these cars.

    • @huntercauble
      @huntercauble  8 років тому

      +B2008Gx I know what you mean. All magazines in the U.S. at least that I am aware of incorporate a 1' rollout except for Edmunds.com so for the sake of comparing apples to apples with what you see in the magazines I likewise include a 1' rollout in mine. Also, at a drag strip there is no getting around that as all cars are measured with 1' rollout.

      +B2008Gx Thank you for the compliment on the time, though, regardless of whether or not it's with the rollout or not! :)

    • @huntercauble
      @huntercauble  6 років тому +9

      Rob Conway, the Red Sport definitely has more power. The Hybrid might have higher peak torque, but it’s only for a very brief part of the band. Overall, the Red Sport throws down great torque through the majority of the band.

  • @trfinator
    @trfinator 8 років тому +3

    hey hunter i have the exact same car as you lol, did you mod yours in any way? ive never actually timed my 0-60s but going off feel alone id like a little more power, and what kind of tires do you use if you dont mind me asking?

    • @huntercauble
      @huntercauble  8 років тому

      +Benny Chan No, it's not modded in any way. The tires I have are Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I would always like a little more power myself! I can tell you going off of feel the car doesn't feel as fast as it is. I'd say my G37S coupe might have felt faster and it helps that car was a manual. I think part of this might be psychological because the G had a little more engine noise under full throttle while are cars are definitely more subdued. Another thing is that the rollout on this car if you are starting in EV mode is usually 0.4 seconds and most cars in this class have a 0.3 second rollout. There's that little lag when starting in EV mode that I think can be a little deceptive on the true accelerative ability of the car. All my measurements were done using a VBOX Sport and done on a full tank of gas just like the reviewers do so everything should be accurate down to one hundredth of a second. I have also gone to a drag strip, but I never tried launching there with the engine on. Considering I ran 13.4 second quarter miles starting in EV mode I think the car could hit 13.1, certainly 13.2 starting with the engine on if you manage to do it without creating wheel spin.

    • @huntercauble
      @huntercauble  8 років тому

      If you haven't seen already, I have posted a dyno run of our car. It's definitely got some power and serious torque. The shop even said I should try again and have them start at 1,500 rpm. They started this run at 2,000 rpm and that was only after trial and error on two more runs that started at their normal 3,000 rpm. Our cars actually are supposed to reach peak torque at 1,470 rpm. That's a very unusual torque peak owed to our unusual powertrain. So, there's probably more torque hiding in there. ua-cam.com/video/cKJmSxoKUO0/v-deo.html

      +Hunter Cauble thank you for the update, and yeah the 250 torque from our electric motor should be instantaneous lol that's why we gun right off the bat, i was asking about mods because I checked out stillen.com and they have a turbo kit for the regular 3.7L q50 that boosts it to 500HP! not for the hybrid though...

    • @huntercauble
      @huntercauble  8 років тому +1

      Yeah, there is someone in my city that has that kit. Unfortunately I think the Atkinson valve timing affects being able to supercharge our car. The 3.7 is more for the modders than ours.

I usually keep in manual mode and leave it in 3rd or 4th gear with the pedal halfway down to charge the battery. Like 2 weeks ago I did 140mph on a downhill and I depleted my battery so I left in 5th gear to charge and slowly a CHP officer creeped up on me and gave me a fat ticket Haha. 110mph on a 65mph he gave me tho

    • @huntercauble
      @huntercauble  8 років тому +2

      +Антон Потапенков It takes just a little bit of finesse. Basically with the car in manual mode, try to come to a complete stop by pressing the brake pedal as gently as possible. Usually this apparently tricks the car into thinking that you are still moving and the engine will stay running at a stop. This works maybe 7/10 times. If the engine turns off, don't worry. Just blip your throttle again to start the engine and repeat what I told you with the brake by stopping the car with as little pressure on the brake pedal as possible. I don't think I've ever had to try more than two times in a row to get the gas engine to stay on a a stop, but if for some reason it still doesn't work just repeat again. Usually the car's computer doesn't take a whole lot of coaxing to get the gas engine to stay on. Just keep playing with it and you should get it, but if you still have trouble don't hesitate to let me know. As far as the warning, I was just turning off traction control there. Because I had Active Lane Control and Blind Spot Intervention on it gave a warning saying they would not be available when turning traction control off. Let me know if you need any other help.
