Man, what a game Celeste is. I picked it up on a whim on the Switch after hearing so many great things about it on the Internet, and it definitely did not disappoint! It’s not just a good platformer; it’s a great game with a very developed story, great music, and clear thematic development. When I play good games… I write arrangements of the music!
Lena Raine’s soundtrack here is phenomenal. I love Indie game soundtracks because they often have a good amount of motivic development across sounds, which is so important to tie the game world together. I used some of the motives from the game’s main motive as background figures in this arrangement just to add my own contribution! The game also features remixes of Lena’s tracks in their respective level’s B-side, which is where the original track for this particular song comes from! It’s 2-Mello’s remix of Mirror Temple.
Regarding my arrangement choices, I went for something that was a bit more Snarky Puppy Sylva-esque, mixing the normal jazz quintet up with some strings and even a vibraphone to double the piano parts! Jeremy, my trumpet collaborator, thought it would be a great idea to use his mute for the opening solo, which turned out really nicely. Doug did a great job, as he always does on the channel by adding some expertly-played vibes and a sick solo! This track came together very nicely, and I hope you all enjoy!

I'd say that's the unique "side" of video game music, especially OSTs. Unlike other music, which can - relatively - be easily picked up & enjoyed, video game music has more context to it. Getting the "full picture" of the music's significance usually requires playing the game the OST appears in, sometimes completely.

@@nup5 It's the equivalent of having fond memories of hearing a song in an important moment of your life. It's the connections we make that elevate songs to another level. The experience comes pre-packaged with OSTs.

finally beating it... made the Farewell OST even *more* important and symbolic. Lena knows her stuff!

the original mirror magic mix is pretty jazzy, this video just amps it up and gives it even jazzier instrumentation

LegendOfPokemon Celeste is such a good game. If you like platformers, get it. It’s $20 and the amount of content that you get is astounding. Very high quality game (and hey the soundtrack is great too).
The story is no exception to the greatness of Celeste, either.

If I were to describe Celeste in comparison to Getting Over It, which also involves climbing a mountain, it’s the equivalent of having someone drive alongside you spraying water as you’re running the marathon in Celeste, as opposed to having Gatorade dunked over you as you finish Getting Over It. Brilliant rendition of the song, btw. One of my most favorite tracks to grace us this year.

I loved the trumpet there in the beginning. Something about muted trumpets not being so bright makes them hit me in the heart in a special place. Maybe one day there will be an external tool that edits the sound of a saxophone in a way that isn't entirely disgusting.

A masterpiece of a game for sure, and this was one of my favourite tracks of the B-side. It takes the haunting tune, shifts it into a completely new genre and still manages to keep so much of the atmosphere. This arrangement builds on that idea and I think you managed to add a lot with the references to other motifs in the soundtrack without losing what made the original tune special.
I agree! The underlying harmony is so mysterious and foreboding almost, but the groove and atmosphere keeps things more positive :) Glad you noticed my nods to the other motifs.

I'm always looking forward to new music from you but this is way more, and far beyond coincidental, than I ever would've expected. This captured the essence of the game perfectly, and I can't lie, Mirror Temple was definitely one of my favourite parts of the game. What an absolute blessing, thank you so much for this beautiful arrangement!!

Celeste has been my favorite game for a long time now. Its music and story touched me deeply and even though it's been some time I haven't played it (to hell with these golden strawberries), your mix awakened very good and nostalgic memories, especially of this level.
