Motorcycle Tour of The Yorkshire Dales - Ep 3

  • This final episode sees us leaving the haven of The Sawley Arms Hotel and taking in the delights of Ingleton, the Ribblehead Viaduct and a fruitless drone attempt, an overcrowded and sunny Hawes before riding the fantastic Buttertubs Pass. We checked out the quaint village of Muker, only because we've been watching "Our Yorkshire Farm" on Channel 5 and we love it! This is their local village and it was on our route so we dropped in for some great Yorkshire ice cream! A quiet night at The Streethead Inn and then we went north to the Tan Hill Inn, Britain's highest pub before reversing the Buttertubs Pass and got our photos taken by Shutterspeed Photography - a great idea if you want an action photo of you riding! We finished our brilliant Dales trip in Skipton. Hope you enjoy this final episode and as always, if you do please give us a thumbs up and comment, subscribe if you haven't already and hit the notification bell! Thanks very much for watching!

      @@midlifemotorcyclediaries We've stayed at the Street Head twice now, and we'll stay again because we love the peace and quiet - traffic in Bishopdale is rare after about 7pm until the following morning, so you're more likely to be woken by sheep than anything else !
      Incidentally, it's not unusual these days for pubs/small hotels in the Dales to be staffed only at busy times. Brexit and Covid have really squeezed the hospitality industry in the area so for some it's no longer viable to keep staff around when the business isn't taking money to pay their wages. Street Head now has an intercom in the porch so you can let them know you're there and someone will turn up in a few minutes to let you in. 😊

    Thanks for posting these travel vlogs. To do them as well as you (two) do is not as easy as some might presume. It’s lovely to see the places you go and the places you stay, especially in early February during lockdown when the bike is firmly locked in the garage. But spring is just around the corner and you have inspired us to do the NC 500 and a Yorkshire dales trip, later this year.
    I will be shamelessly ripping off lots of you’re itinery even down to staying in some of the places you recommend, so I know who to blame if it all goes terribly wrong! Stay safe and ride safe you two and let’s hope we can all get back to normal soon. All the best.

Down here there are only 2 roads out so it's a good 1.5 hours before you can get onto anything different and it's generally a pain.

    OMG the butcher in Ingleton is now an Indian Restaurant. Thx for the video I worked on a farm in Bishopdale one spring a long time ago. I don't think I saw another bike in Hawes at that time. I lived within a couple of miles of Ingleton eventually in Lancaster for 35 years b4 emigrating. Learnt to ride on those roads, a fabulous place. Next time you'll have to visit Skipton Castle. Definitely worth it if you are interested in History. Also, the Wensleydale Creamery is a must. The best cheese in the world IMO.
    Your parking spot in Ingleton is where my Nanna used to park her motorcycle, a Douglas & or a James, she used to get her sister on the pillion. Auntie Gertie wore leg braces, she had polio as a child. Then she used to bump start it down the hill. I think her crazy motorcycling tales got me interested in bikes. I also saw the Flying Scotsman go over the Ingleton Viaduct as a young un. Thx again.

      @@midlifemotorcyclediaries We left the UK in 89. I was 35. The North of England was in a mess. I was spending my time roofing in London. The opportunity presented itself & off we went. I got a job with Aus Post 2 km from home & I stayed there until I retired. My wife got a Govt. job and we're all good. I miss a few things mainly food orientated such as Wensleydale cheese. Plus things like Skipton Castle. The heat gets a bit much in summer, but 300 days a year of clear blue skies what's not to like. The roads here are different a lot of straight roads it takes me an hour to get to interesting places & there are lots. The roads similar to say Bishopdale are often gravel & not always well maintained. That said with careful planning you can keep on the tar. Country Pubs usually have a bed for $40-50 a night and a decent meal. Lots of free or low-cost camping in Showgrounds etc. Country hospitality is great. The grey nomads & their caravans help keep country towns alive. The UK looks to be in a lot better shape than in 89 thankfully. All the best looking forward to some more of your videos.

    Thanks for another great episode. It’s going to be tough to pick what to see with only one week in Scotland, and another week in England and Wales. (Any advice appreciated, other than “take more time.” We wish we could, but alas obligations here limit our time.) Like you, I dislike crowds so maybe we should skip the places in this episode.

    • @midlifemotorcyclediaries
      @midlifemotorcyclediaries  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Marco - if you only have 2 weeks and one of them is Scotland, it would make more sense to do the second week in England and maybe do some of the Yorkshire Dales? As it’s fairly close. We think it’s best not to try to do too much in one trip 😀👍

    As I live in France the word "Desormais" above the entry portal of Skirton Castle hit me in the eye . Apparently "Henceforward" was the motto of owners in 1700s. But you knew that, sorry.

    Thoroughly enjoyed that guys, well done. Been to most of the places you visited, mostly on beemers ( I've had an 1150GS, 2 X 1100RT, 1 X 1200 RT and an 1100R ) - currently without a bike but that will change - am looking to downsize as I'm a shortarse at 5ft 8 and 11 stone wet through!!
    Ride safe, and perhaps I may see you on the road sometime - oh, and if you venture into the cotswolds let me know - my neck o the woods.
