The NBA Has A "Defense" Problem

- What happened to defense in the NBA? It feels like this is a question that's being asked now more than ever before. The idea that basketball players are not playing defense as much as they used to. Defense is considered boring by a lot of fans, but it's also arguably the most important part of basketball.

I'm blown away by your ability to think outside the box and present your ideas in such a compelling way. All facts thanks for the videos ENEM
i rather see 70 point game because of tougher defence than inflated 130, because each point feels like it matters it has its own value
Thats an unpopular opinion. But i agree, i come from a football background so lower points means more value. And i prefer the anticipation compared to the spectacle
Defense has become less individual effort and more team strategy
And less visually appealing and effective
Where the defense when u guard your own man ,if u get beat then that’s your fault then sub his ass ,but no they coaches won’t do that
They made hand checking and defensive screens illegal. When that happened it tooks the defensive ability away. Your always a step behind the offensive player.
Bringing back the hand checking makes a big difference
Thank you for a very detailed hoop video
Defense is fire, I'd watch a steal compilation over a 3pt compilation any day, let alone a block compilation
Nice vid, opened new perspectives on basketball defense for me. Really good editing quality, underrated channel fr
Btw micwise I noticed your S's are a bit iffy my ears r feeling sumthing
@@timphanuel988that probably just like the accent because they are from a different area then you
Super solid vid bruh. I 100% agree. great ending.
lol @ James Harden the revolutionary traveler.
Very inspiring, have been watching your videos since 900 subs
underrated, glad I found this channel
The only way to make defense better is either balance the rules that both balance the offense and defensive plays like keep 14 second offensive rebound, bring back hand checking, stricken flopping and irregular basketball moves or make the refs put down their whistles like the 2010 NBA Finals.
"Bring back handchecking" imagine a defender putting a hand on Embiid's hip. All the rip through shot attempts he would do. What happens next?
People just cant fathom that todays players are just way better. @@eazymoneydbooker5957
@ nah, he just gotta adjust to that game.
they'll will adjust to the hand checking real quick. The officiating is bad both ways. Like I've seen LeBron get swatted and hammered while going thru the rim only for the refs to ignore it. They would've called it a foul on any other player. However, the refs do let LeBron and other stars get away with blatant travels. I'm talking about real travelling, not what the old heads call travel these days.
@@eazymoneydbooker5957 The vid was right. It is deranged nostalgia on the part of some old heads. We forgot how bum ass boring some games were back then because they always shooting free throws. Like I can't stand hack a Shaq, it's a complete waste of time.
Insane content, please keep it up, you're gonna make it big
U earned a sub bro ur content is good. I have hundreds of thousands of followers and create content and idk if u on other platforms but ur a good creator fr
thank you. you have the most balanced and realistic take out there. It's demented for old heads to say that players from their era would average 50 today. That's cap. But modern players are indeed whiny and entitled. Their attitude is bad for the game, but the game is exponentially better in terms of talents and tactics.
Great visuals about an interesting topic, as a person who likes basketball but doesn't have that much knowledge about it. Would be slightly better if your voice is less monotone and if you use a better mic.
Keep up with the content 💪
Keep up the good work!
amazing video.amazing.
It's simple. They made hand checking and defensive screens illegal and it destroyed the ability to defend. You have to be able to keep a hand on a guy to properly defend or he's always gonna be a step ahead
Great vid! Very underappreciated
Great Defense is the reason why basketball is even worth watching, because when someone is able to overcome gr8 defense to score with consistency or with clutch plays, it means even more. Anything that is earned with great effort and difficulty (seen & unseen) creates emotional energy, which creates connection. Still celebrate gr8 offense, do not belittle either one.
gr8 video.
Jrue Holiday Derrick White Amen Ausar Thompson Tari Eason Jalen Williams....
Wemby Chet Rudy....
Draymond *with some dirtiness*
plenty of gr8 defenders who are overcoming the rules playing high iq tough defense.

Was this recorded in 1872?
The problem is the 3 second rule might as well chuck 3s 3 needs to be increased to 5 letting centers sit paint will increase ball pressure until then no defense will be played plus how can you possibly guard 5 out so ion really blame no one it’s the rules not the players 💯
It will end badly. Most centers are unable to camp the paint now because opposing bigs can and will shoot 3s if you leave them open. Like if you're playing against BOS, ur center will 100% not be in the paint because Horford or Porzingis will punish you from the arc. now your bigs have to account for them, which opens up space for Brown and Tatum to attack the paint.
@ but if I can stay more stationary I might be able to atleast consider it 3 seconds is outdated if post play and 3s tryna be even this the best move 3 seconds sucks
The refs need to be held more accountable for the officiating and not calling blatant flops and irregualr non-basketball moves to go into a defender. Even the "putting your shoulder down and just running through a defender's chest" needs to be addressed but the flopping and complaining to refs is becoming incessant now. Not to mention the carrying violations, I love how you addressed Harden changed the way we carry because initially the carry on the ai crossover changed the dribble style and allowed for more "palming" which wasn't too bad tbh. If you palmed it for a short enough time and not with your hand DIRECTLY under the ball it wasn't THAT bad but now; my gosh. You see guys take 3 or 4 and even more steps repeatedly INFRONT of refs and its just disgraceful to watch. The 4-step stepback needs to get dumped, it and the 3 step euro is some of the most egregious travel violations we've ever seen. Anyways I'm rambling, love the video bro you gained a new sub.
The league that employs them is to blame. Referees just carry out the will of NBA executives. If they ever felt discontent with the quality of refereeing, some change would be made. The truth is the NBA operates with the intention of inflating the offense to boost audience engagement and profits.
Everyone is dunking like vince carter today because there is zero defense
defence is worse today easily, except for on ring protection (block and chasedowns/traps) where its much better in general.
some commenter below says its less individual effort on D and more team strategy,
well the team strategy is not great then, cos team defence is worse today in general.
yes, there are way more foul calls on ball/shooter today. but on ball is only part of defense.
Defensive tactics and defensive players are exponentially better today. You're huffing nostalgia shrooms. Being physical doesn't equate to good defense. any hobo can stay on someone if you're allowed to hug them on the waist. Even MJ wouldn't be even able to score on a prime Kawhi if you allow him to hand check. Unlike old players, modern defenders can actually stay in front of superior ball handlers. ler
wrong. you gotta watch some old school ball man. u youngns dont get it. defence starts before your man even gets the ball. can stick your head in the sand and wonder why guys shoot so many threes now (in general not talking bout great shooters like Curry), but its exactly because of (1) poor defense as well as (2) more guys training to shoot the three ball more/better. cant really do much about (2) but can about (1). guys would shoot much less threes if the D was better. which would be better for the overall game.
good video
We need another Bad Boy Pistons
won't work. Bad Boy Pistons worked because the game back then was paint oriented. They can camp the lane and punish drives. Your modern defense is spaced out because 5 players on the floor can shoot 3s.
@ oh, yeah
post more plz w content
Offense rules are unfair that make it entertaining and thus harder for defence
Because basketball is a spectacle
But when will they change the rule thou
Well balanced team wins trophies. Not the best defending or most offensive team 😀
So who are you to discredit old nba players regarding the defense now and then?
nick anderson dropped 50 off the bench 30 years ago... i see the point ur going for but be accurate- plus that's not the only time it's happebed
So you made a gr8 point of the NBA sees scoring highlights getting more clicks and views than defense highlights. That is on people viewing the content and reacting to it. Yet, the league can do a better job at marketing defense, defensive stars and highlights.
Celebrate 2 MVPs. hear me out. Defensive MVP Offensive MVP. Yes, there already is the Defensive Player of Year award. Yet it considered second tier to the MVP award. So do more to showcase gr8 defense, which still exists.
Another enem video oh yeah
the 2000 was the greatest defense era ever & not even close sorry the 80's, 90's were overrated when it comes to defense
Okay you have a point on that. I don’t feel if the older years was not good think they let them play the game
The best era was like 2008 to 2015. 3 ball hasn't exploded yet, but it was already foreshadowed by the Suns, Spurs, and the heat when they put Bosh on 5 and gave him the green light to shoot 3s. Defensive tactics from the early 2000s still persists but you can see it evolving as players like LeBron and Melo move to the PF position and created matchup nightmares.
@ I would agree that was the most diverse basketball in the NBA but my point was the greatest defensive era was the early 2000s
Almost had me liking and subscribing before you mentioned joel embiid
