  • The Re:Think Essay Competition is dedicated to nurturing critical thinking and encouraging the exploration of a wide array of thought-provoking and, at times, controversial topics. In 2024, Re:Think underscores the pivotal role that discourse, debate, and critical analysis play in addressing complex societal challenges.
This year, CCIR received over 4,200 submissions from students representing more than 50 countries. From these entries, our distinguished jury panel-comprising scholars from both sides of the Atlantic-selected approximately 350 students for Honourable Mention, with 33 ultimately being recognised as award winners.
In this video, we interview Michael Noh, a Gold Award recipient from Korea International School in South Korea. His award-winning essay, "A Rendition of '1984': A Look at Privacy Dilemmas in AI-Driven Data Mining," delves into the privacy issues and ethical challenges posed by AI-powered data mining. The essay begins with the Cambridge Analytica scandal, demonstrating how AI and data mining are used to influence public opinion and compromise personal privacy. Michael explains the workings of AI systems like machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing, emphasising their inability to differentiate between sensitive and non-sensitive data. He also examines real-world cases of AI misuse, including IBM's facial recognition, targeted advertising by companies like Spotify, and government surveillance, particularly in China. Ultimately, he argues that current privacy regulations, such as GDPR, fall short of addressing these AI-related concerns, calling for a global effort to improve AI oversight and regulation.
