I felt so sorry for the poor kids not being able to talk with the parents and laugh! Lily`s and the other family boy`s tears nearly made me cry. How lucky we were to having had bonding time together with our parents(I`m 25 myself) and expressing the opinions without a fear of being smacked or told off!
Now THIS is my idea of a reality TV show! You actually learn something from it. Thanks for the upload, I wouldn't have been able to see it otherwise.
The BBC has some awesome shows =)
Especially Sherlock and Doctor Who! Amazing shows.
Saskia did a great job toughing it out and rising to the occasion. Thanks for uploading!
I've been looking for this series for years and I found it, I FOUND IT. Thanks for uploading this series.
I thought the two teenagers would be spoiled brats, but they turned out to be my favorite family. what a great show. America needs shows like this instead of having dumb ass reality shows that are about fighting, cussing and being superficial.
omgodd --the man thats in the 'middle class house' ----Hes got into the part hasnt he? - lolol. He doesnt have to go that far!
Let me put it this way! - if my dad had signed for this show just for shitzzz and giggles, and then treated me like this with his biggoted edwardians way just to show off to the camera, then I at this young age would be plotting my revenge, and signing him up for the ole folkies home!
Lol I wanted to punch him
LOL - Them kids are going to grow up really screwed up!
Jon Jones I not believe it was his true colors. It distressed him to upset his children, but it was something he had to do. The boy got over it quicker than the father did. I actually thought he was kinder than he should have been. He was nicer in his role than my grandfather was and is to my mother, and he did not even have the edwardian way of doing this as a reason.
Ok ----I think at the very least he was a little to 'exuberant' in his role........I think the boy that became upset, was perhaps too young....and 'took this to heart' ----and, lets not forget ------It wasnt something he 'HAD' to do .....the children didnt 'sign' up for this series.....the parents did. Yes he was told to act in an authentic way.......but imao, he overplayed his part to the Max! - He could have explained first, before barging in the room like an Edwardian toss pot - lol
That was amazing and even though I didn't 'live' the experience, even watching it showed me how spoiled we are today. My great-grandmother was a servant in some Lord's house in England a hundred years ago and I remember my father telling me that she worked 16 hours a day, six days a week (I guess the master felt strongly about not working on the Sabbath and gave his servants the days off).
Very well done!
All the children look so adorable in their Edwardian clothes!
Children then weren't tougher, just more emotionally scarred.
It is interesting to note that all of the family felt they lacked something. The poor family lacked money but were able to spend family time together. The middle class family lacked affection but their material needs were met. And the upper class family lacked family togetherness but was the most financially well of. It makes one wonder what really is the key to family happiness? Clearly feeling loved, being materially cared for are very important but could something else be needed to bring families even closer together? The Bible has the answer (Matthew 5:3.)
I really like the concept, the team did a good job recreating the period. The Taylor parents would not be so lonely in reality.. he'd have friends at his gentleman's club and she'd also be getting together with female friends for cultural evenings etc.. it was segregated but there was society. Whenever someone burst into tears it would make me laugh! They all appreciated what they have much more after that.
Actually when it came to the theatre. Sometimes the wives did go with. It was not always the gent was alone. This is true about those who had private booths.
Also, a woman's rep was more important back then. A woman with the slightest hint of dishonour was more likely to become a soiled dove. Disowned from the family. In order to keep the shame of her being a loose woman away from the family.
Gila Atwood yeah but I understand that they couldn’t rally all there friends and put them in historically accurate clothing lol
I miss such wholesome shows... all we do now is crass humor and glits. Sad times 😢
Thank you for putting quality onto UA-cam! There is so much bad stuff, this is very refreshing!
Fascinating program. Thank God for UA-cam - it allows to watch all the brilliant programming Great Britian enjoys. Nothing like it here in the U.S.A.
I saw this series once years ago and was terribly impressed!
I normally hate, hate, HATE reality shows; however, this one breaks the mold and actually allow both the participants and the viewers learn something useful and fulfilling. We can't actually lives from past eras, but this comes about as close as one can.
What an extraordinary opportunity these people have to participate in this experience.I would love it if an American program would be produced having Americans whose ancestors immigrated, go back to the time and place of their ancestors to try to experience what there lives were like & maybe why they felt they had to leave. It could be a show that neve ends.
Okay, I'm only 23 minutes in and the middle class dad is getting on my nerves.
i agree that is mean what he's doing i no it's an act but it's still mean
Hannah Matthau i no it was a long time ago but kids not being able to talk is kind of dark age i'm not saying kids should be equal but they can't be in the kitchen they can't talk to there parents is kind of mean i mean i do belive that kids need to respect aduts never talk back but the part where they can't talk to them is old school
Hannah Matthau strict is a good thing but these dads r not even talking to there kids only when it comes to discipline i had strict parents but they gave effection which is also what a kid needs these dads of 1900s r only disciplining there like kids there kings there treeting there kids like slaves they can strict but loving
At 22:16. He's a tit
i think it's good for dads to be like that what u think
I love this show--what an education. I really loved the lower class family.
I came back to the first episode to leave this comment. Watch them!! It may seem a bit slow or monotonous at first, but it really starts to shine as the families begin to interact. Very nice series.
Only wish U.S. TV knew how to make good stuff like this. They did at one time, maybe 15 years ago. Then our television experience rapidly devolved into murder documentaries, endless law enforcement junk, fake courts, and Dr. Phil the Miracle Healer.
how the tylors went from riches to rags
What seems to bother these families more than anything is not the lack of modern conveniences, but the way they were so separated from each other by work and societal expectations. The father in tears because he couldn't go to the music hall with his family, and the father who knew nothing about his Jewish immigrant family spoke volumes about their most cherished values.
I would love to live like that. Wish they had something like that here
An excellent eye-opener & brilliant educational video for the masses :D Thanks very much for sharing!
Wow looking back over 100 years in Edwardian and Victorian times people in general were unhappy, lonely and very depressive it did not matter what class you were it was still depressive even for higher class families not being able to spend quality time with each other and their children. Women had no say whatsoever and men were out doing their duties and their children spending their time with their nannies sometimes it makes me grateful to live in the 21st century.
Wow....another excellent series from the UK......(I will excuse the series "Supersizers Eat"...which for most of the series only showed how posh people lived and ate through the ages)....this series shows working, middle and upper classes, which I appreciate.....these series should be required viewing for all...to see how far ordinary folks lifestyles have improved since Edwardian times....thank WW I, WW II, the womens movement, and unions for that.....
Thank you so much for posting this! I love these kinds of shows, the English do them so well, all the details of historical living.
The family who ended up in house No.1 all of them are lovely esp the husband and the wife. Sweetest couple
I agree and disagree. While I agree that children should be taught the value and appreciation of things in the past, they were also not regarded as people. They were used as cheap labour and more easily abused. They were not even allowed to express ANYTHING. That is not healthy either. Sure, we have problems in our time, but it's not 100% bad. Emotional/psychological well-being, disabilities, sexuality/sexual issues matter much more now. Ignoring those needs lead to incapable adults as well.
Adore your channel. Its bar far my favorite. My own family must be stuck in the edwardian era since I was raised this way. :)
My dad was like the middle class dad. At dinner we spoke only when spoken to, he was head of the house and his word was law. the only difference was when he would come home from work there were hugs and kisses and lots of love. i know i would be living like the meadows, my great grandfather immigrated from London to New York. they were poor.
The Meadows should have some of the morning routine prepared the night before? Like breaking up the coal and having it ready for a match as soon as they wake up. Water already in the kettle and sitting on the stove, and whatever else to make the morning easier.
i wish they would do an american version of this
mourning4them I don't think it would work
@@newew15 Why not?
@@terrigaines1812 Americans are to sensitive already and it would be so much butthurt.
@@newew15 agreed. Too bloody self centered by half as well. Ugh. Too thick to get the actual point of the exercise. BTW. I'm american.
They have.
Thanks for uploading. I really enjoyed watching this when it was on BBC1.
Thank you very much Edwardianpromenade, I love these programs and I love your channe. Thanks lots.
Oh my, those poor little angels at 26:00 - especially the two smallest ones to the left of the screen. The idea of them working their little hearts out just breaks mine :( . Poor little poppets.
Thanks so much for sharing...Very good program and informative! Merry Christmas!
I do wonder how much the meadow's family would have envied the upper class Taylor family but I love the fact that quite possibly the wealthy would have envied the lower class because they were a true family built on closeness, love and loyalty to eachother.....hmmm?!?!
Although parents were generally stricter I think it's wrong to presume that they all would've been harsh. I'm sure there are many examples of Edwardian parents loving and spending time with their children.
wish america make shows like this it would be great.
Thanks so much for uploading!! This is one of my fave tv shows
I live in the UK and I wat he'd this years ago, so thought I'd watch again as I love these types of programmes, and was told it wasn't available, thanks god for VPN'S lol I'm currently watching this from New York 😂
I love this channel, and all the videos on it. Thank you for uploading.
What an excellent series of shows! I really appreciate this watching in America. This is really really good. Thank you for posting this. 💓
Man I know my daughter would love to do this in real life! She loves this kind of thing. Hell I got this in my notifications because she watches this types of videos!
I'm also extremely impressed with the Meadows girls working so hard.
Brilliant channel, thank you for sharing some wonderful series.
That's how it is here in bell post hill Vic regional we have 1950 home handwash dishes by hand my 26 year old twins have heart arythmia I practically do it all my self
Even though this was the hardest one, it's strangely my favourite time
I was thinking the same, I hate reality shows they are NOT REAL. Who gives a damn about these people on these shows I don't, and don't watch. These however are really reality not money gimmicks. I love these.
I can't help but wondering if this affects the smaller children in a bad way. I don't know if little children can understand that dad is just acting mean and that he will be back to normal in a while. Who's to say he won't just suddenly turn Mr. Hyde on them again?
For working class and poor the Edwardian era was a very trying and difficult time. One essential clause that isn't being fully grasped is that this era was one too an era of innovation. For instance, securing fabric over the rollers of the mangle and finding a means to heat the device up would significantly cut down on ironing time. The less time it takes to perform a task the more productive an operation and the more capital/revenue can be made.
If you're poor in the Edwardian era it doesn't hurt to be inventive.
As a fellow American I agree wholeheartedly, why I watch mostly British programming, clever, smart and very entertaining.
Keep your status by keeping your distance. Some people do that nowadays, it’s so sad. 🤷🏽♀️ I guess, not something I would do though.
I know this show is 9 years old but it’s wonderful!
The Downton Abbey Music
I noticed that too :D so exciting
I like how fancy the dinner parties were in the Edwardian era. I remember the dinner parties in Upstairs Downstairs & The Duchess of Duke Street.
I would love to be the mean nanny of the upper class, 'shut off those silly tears'.
Lol true..
It is harder than you might think. We do period days at our school and it is very hard to be those characters .
thank you so much for sharing..very good programe
This is a wonderful concept and enjoyable show. I would be interested in seeing all time periods/social classes represented.
what a brilliant upload! xD i lol'ed all the way! thx! :)
The meadows are such a cute family they all seem to really love and care about each other naww
Those poor young children......and that clerk in the middle class is taking it way too far and enjoying it too much. i cant even watch
I agree! I want to see this series so bad!! :)
The comments are disappointing because a good bit of them are "WAAA THEY ARENT FITTING PERFECTLY INTO THEIR ROLES"
they aren't supposed to you idiots, their reactions are part of the experiment, and if you ask me the experiment is too strict and I think the middle class father is taking advantage of this to be abusive and there should be more families of each type so the upper class mother isn't socially deprived
Elementary and High School children in the US should have to watch this and realize just how fortunate they are to live in the US.
the us was very diffrent in the 1900s
Miabia1000 Um...yeah. I DO KNOW that this takes place in England. That's why I made the comment I did.
the uk is not like that any more
You mean fortunate to live in modern times? The US and UK culture is not at all that different, even more so in the 1900s (with the exception of the western frontier) Life in NYC, Boston, or Baltimore would be almost indistinguishable from what is portrayed on this show.
I can hear the ''Downton Abbey'' music in the back round and it's making me want to watch it!
i love saskia....so sweet....she must work so hard!!!!! it is a realy life experience...
I love your channel and all things Edwardian, do you have another channel specializing on any such era. I would love to see more of these shows. Many thanks for uploads, I've seen them all :)
God seeing mrs Taylor and her children talk about how they want to be together is painfully tragic the second time through
Notice how they took the music from Downton Abbey :)
this shows are good thanks!!
I agree with all of you ole chaps lol, America "reality" shows are a far cry from the realism of this show. I guess ppl are feeding into the dumb down era, thanks for this upload. I will be subscribing
the middle class son is the cutest child I have ever seen
what u think of back than
I like how they have to interact/live together with modern people .. :)
the middle class "man" is soo rude! the "poor" girl worked all day and comed home happier than him cuz "hi's day was boring". He made his kid cry! i jumped all of his parts aftter it.
Mr Goldstein is VERY correct in how he saw how manners are being tossed by the wayside. Especially manners between family members. Thing is, he is not as strict in this time period as my own parents were about manners.
As for the rich family. It is a glimpse that it was not a bed of roses either.
And to think that many of the middle class kids today think it is hard to live the way they do in the current years.
I would suggest that if any kid is being a brat. Have them watch this episode. And point out that most likely he or she would be in house #3.
what u think of this
That lady has a REALLY nice handwriting style :O
what u think of the dad
I feel so....so.....ungrateful for what I have.....this stuff made me really sad, especially with the parents they really couldn't sit and relax with their children. Poor things.
My grandma spent something like $300-500 trying to get all the David Attenborough Life series from Amazon UK (we had to because they were only selling the Oprah version in our stores here)... unfortunately they belong to her so I have to try to borrow them. We can share nature ones but I like the history ones she isn't willing to buy. On my salary its just not feasible for me to buy all the videos I love to watch here on YT. Recently a lot of vids are disappearing due2 copyright issues...
We have no dishwasher 2023
That's the Earl of Grantham narrating this program.
It's kind of interesting to know that the rich were isolated from their families while the poor are closer because they have to work as a unit.
Can you please upload the whole series? Thanks a lot!
i agree i feel sorry for the little children in the middle class family who are crying cuz of the dad's behavior but really that isn't very "strict" at all he isn't raising his voice and he's saying please and thank you to them. people were truly made of stronger stuff in the past.
I was raised in the 2000s and can strongly agree.
I love the decoration on the boiler in No. 1. It looks like Wedgewood
+kennashan what u think of the old days
I think work was hard and so was life for some. My gran was born in 1908, so I grew up hearing a lot of "back in the day" tales
kennashan what u think of how kids were
Children then did, indeed, go out to work to help support the family. And it was truly the rule, children were to be seen and not heard. Young folks did not interrupt grown folks. That was a big no no
kennashan do u like that
I feel bad for the middle class father. I think at the start he liked the idea of being the absolute authority in his house but it was clearly very difficult for him to treat his children the Edwardian way. I don't think he enjoyed it much at all.
history, why don't we learn this in school? it really makes it more real and I think we all wouldn't be so stressed.
przynajmniej nie trzeba ogladac bbc drills- dentures and dentistry czesc 2
Huzza! Well said my friend!
Came back to these series thanks to the "The Sims: decade challenge" the sims challenge isn't particularly accurate so I come to here.
I can hear mum saying children should be seen and not heard .
What's interesting is the moderns aren't understanding that their reactions are what they are because, unlike the Edwardians they're portraying, they have not been conditioned from birth to accept their status and hierarchical and patriarchal life as it was in the late 19th and early 20th century. The children would have been conditioned to absent parents and the parents conditioned to their gender roles. It's not that life was "harder"", "boring", or "more difficult," it's that they are moderns, accustomed to a computerized, automated, push-button world and have been thrust into a mechanical, steam, coal-powered, and oil and candle-illuminated one where gender, parental, and children's roles and family values were very, very different.
That puts a new twist on the old joke about council workers slacking off-get some guy who is doing a show on the Edwardian times to do the work for them. Lol.
I don't know what it is, but I really like this program and the one about the pharmacy and the one about the farm, it's cool to see how "it was". Good entertainment and information. How much is 5 shillings ??????????
Hannah Matthau Thank you Hannah, that does explain it to me a little better
Was the Golding father told to be a complete pratt in this episode?
It’s so old that is has a REAL GHOST in it
Mimimi it was soooo awfull to be rich. It was soooo boring not to have to choose between 16 hour work or starving.
You can check Amazon UK, for this kind of stuff-they WILL ship to the US-when are here, get a region-free DVD player-set it it to naught. When do you intend to move?
I know!! I love your channel. Its the only reason I even know this series exists. I don't know if you saw it but recently when I was watching it YT suggested links as related videos to the other topics in the same series... there's one for the British High Street so far only the war time high street has been uploaded by someone else. :-) Trust me I've watched all six you posted :-) If YT ever makes you move please email me to tell me where to find your stuff.
They should put this on PBS in America.
Lmao imagine hoping your middle class but instead u get the dirt poor family 😂😂😂😂
