Microchips in LV bags? How Digital Authenticity will affect Luxury shopping | Aura by LVMH
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- Today, I wanted to open a discussion about the new digital authenticity technology that luxury brands are moving towards. LVMH has developed a blockchain-based platform called “Aura”. This can track each item through its whole life-cycle, from raw materials sourced all the way to who the item was sold to and even store information on change of ownership post-sale from boutique. This is truly revolutionary in luxury authentication as it will make it very difficult for the replica/counterfeit market to reproduce the digital signature of the item.
So instead of the date stamps or authenticity cards, items will now come with a microchip embedded.
What do you guys think about this? I am very excited! Also, please share any information or experience you may have with the new digital authenticity!
Thank you so much for watching and have an amazing day or night :)
Xx Isabelle

I recently bought a speedy 25 Boundolier at LV Boutique and it did not had a date code on it which was very surprised to me so I returned to the boutique to ask why my bag did not had a date code and then they explained to me that it has a microship. Its very exciting for me I have one of those bags with a microchip and love the idea to track everything about the bag that way we the customers are protected. Great informative Video👍🏻
Truly revolutionary, I agree. I'm also really interested in how this will affect the second hand market as well.
Especially Ebay and the Japanese sellers.
@@sherrycohen1824 what's the thing with Japanese sellers? Are those on ebay fakes?
@@dance4technolife Japan has very strict anti-counterfeit laws. I've bought LV from Japanese sellers on Ebay. They are real. I sent two items to LV for repair years later and they were authentic.
Interesting video! I recently saw that Mulberry have started selling pre-loved bags on their website, will be interesting to see if other brands follow suit. With the new microchip, whether the price of older items increases due to ability to authenticate, or whether this will allow help LV bring pre-loved items in-house as currently only they have the ability to scan them.
The shoe brand that I love, Fluevog, already facilitates the preloved resale market on their official website for many years now. Although they don’t regulate it, they let people put ads and do their own buy/sell of that brand of shoes. What we get is a community of like-minded folks, it’s great. Very sustainable and great place to find shoes that one missed out on. It works well for the brand too as it promotes brand awareness and strengthens the love for the brand.
It’s my understanding that Mulberry has started buying their own used items to restore & resell as preloved through their own platform. I’ve always wondered if the larger luxury brands would do this, to me it makes perfect sense for them to do so. Of course I’d be interested in buying pre-loved LV or Dior or even Chanel directly from the fashion house’s own pre-loved platform. I could imagine it would be extremely advantageous for Hermes to do the same thing Mulberry is apparently doing.
It sounds like a good idea but they are going to have to make sure that it’s all encompassing. For example, how are brands going to handle situations such as somebody buying an item as a gift for another person, or what happens when the owner dies and someone else inherits their luxury items?
That shirt is absolutely GEORG!!! Thanks for sharing the details because that was going to be my first question lol xo
Oooh exciting changes - I have seen that Chanel is also doing the same with microchips for the next season and indeed, the preloved market is booming and the vintage quality is also a lot better
It is a very interesting development but I need more information about how the technology works to evaluate it. There is a fine line between cutting down on reselling and making consumers feel like they will have no way to show authenticity if they ever resell in the future if the product does not work out for them. Great video!
My concern is if the chip is faulty or breaks over time how will they read the info in it? Tech moves fast and over time old chips will become either obsolete or breaks. There must be some sort of backup for these situations
Sales SA can look up the transaction by your name still.
Agreed! I think it would have been nice for them to leave the date code and the microchip. The microchip leaving it exclusively for LVUITTON.
chanel will do this too, its already confirmed (i read about it 1-2weeks ago i guess). im
sure many people that shop preloved from private sellers will hate it because it will make it very difficult to authenticate the bag online but because i only shop from reputable preloved websites like VC or FP when i buy something preloved im not really bothered by that because they authenticate and if its still not authentic i would get my money back so no problem for me here :)
i also think its a very good idea, especially that they can see when a piece is stolen and stuff like that. i think the fake industry is also huge right now and it needs to be stopped somehow so i totally understand why the brands doing this and im 100% with them!
Regretfully I had the misfortune to buy an item from VC and it turned out to be fake. I was reimbursed after I notified them and returned the purchase but that made me lose all the faith in that website. Very dreadful experience...
@@adelinadobrete9168 even after was authenticated by VC or was it under amount to do that? so sorry, glad you were able to sort out!
@Dave, the only way for FF or VC or any others to authenticate is by having the technology to do so though.
@@je-suis_Tati i guess they will find a way to do so. i also heard that some brands will have apps in the future for thr customers to scan those chips wich can be accurate cause those chips arent difficult to scan as you can see with other microchip technology like NFC or so ;)
we will see ;)
@@adelinadobrete9168 always get stuff authenticated after purchase, even if the website check authenticity before shipping the item. i can understand that you are disappointed now but at least you get your money back from those websites wich you get not from private sellers so immagime the terror you have had when you bought from a stranger of facebook or so
Isabelle, this is such a great video! Coincidentally, I’ve been reading up on Aura. Like you, I’m most excited to see how this will shape the industry. ❣️ Thank you for sharing with us your bit of research!
This video was great Isabella and thank you for showing us how to shop for the best bag and get s fabulous deal on them. Have a lovely Mother's Day!! ❤🤗
Definitely food for thought! I just read that Lululemon (a popular workout brand in Canada) is also planning to take in used clothing as a trade in to get a piece of the resale market. I’m guessing this may be a way of the future
Have a great day!
This is interesting! Thanks for sharing
Very interesting hon, great way forward 🥰
I just inspect my newly bought Saint Laurent bag. In the authenticity booklet, it says the bag "may equipped with an identifying tag readable by radio frequency (RFID)". But this tag does not collect personal data. I think this is also kinda cool. I have not get direct info from my SA on more details.
If these brands were to actually do a secondhand trade in/buy out system that would be amazing. It would take out a lot of the stress and waiting that comes with selling on your own or with a third party, and you could get credit immediately towards your next purchase! Plus they would still make a fair amount of profit of course. Some non-luxury brands are already doing this like Levi’s.
I have a feeling a lot of these brands will choose not to implement such a program because they might fear it will harm their image/status so we will see.
I came across a replica seller on instagram few days ago and surprisingly they already had a replica version with microchip😱 they even showed videos of how they can scan with their phones and it directed to the official website. The replica makers are really next level and I’m mindblown.
Oh wow. That's insane. Do you have the instagram handle? I would like to look into, it just seems so hard to believe. These replica sellers are really stepping up their game!
I am not sure what scanner app they used, but all i know is that LV microchip scanner is not available to anyone/everyone. If you use just any microchip scanner, it will not direct u to the LV website. When my SA did the scan, the information shown in her screen was different from the info showed in my “standard” microchip scanner.
I love this! Crazy how technology is changing the luxury market !
As a cosumer of preloved market I am now worry about authentic items... should I go to boutique with item and check it?...🤔
I love this idea but can we (the buyers/public) access the site to ensure the item is authentic? I'm confused on how we would know the item is registered in the system. The company may have a way of testing the chip technology but how does the consumer?
Great video and information. Still curious how this stops replicas. Don’t people who buy replicas know they are intentionally buying a replica? They won’t expect it to be able to be authenticated because they knew what they were buying. Am I misunderstanding the replica market? I think it will be more geared toward the resale market.
I think scammers who sell replicas posing as the preloved real deal was a big issue as a consumer. And taking it to the flagship store to have it confirmed at Chanel especially was not foolproof. So this way it would be a scan, and confirm type situation.
I get that part. Still won’t effect the actual replica market which is huge. It will make it harder for resale both authentic and scammer at the same time.
@@tiffanymacklin-hale9554 is it really a problem from a consumer perspective if they already know they're buying a replica? If that's the case where does it end? Fast fashion stores like Aldo have designer inspired bags all the time and people already know that it's a "dupe" should these stores also be penalized?
With that being said, I do not support buying replicas for myself, but for some people it's what they want to do, should we be policing them?
@@doriosity5811My statement was merely that I don’t think LV is doing this to combat replicas. It wasn’t a statement against people buying replicas. People buy them and a chip won’t stop that. To each their own. In my opinion LV is doing this to reduce the resale market. It will be harder to sell preloved.
That will be great to stem out replicas and prevent those people who resell the highly sought after bags at a profit once they obtain it from the boutiques if it makes the authentication difficult for the resellers and buyers should the item not be bought from the boutiques. 👏🏻
Such an informative video! I would love to see a video showing how it works in store, if that is something you can do.
Thank you for the video, very informative. This sounds like a massive change for the luxury market! It's good if we get more transparency with raw materials and the production cycle as well. I wonder if this technology would eventually be applied to items like clothing and shoes as well? Also, would an individual customer have access to the microchip info, or will it be exclusive to the brands themselves?
Looking forward to following how this will impact secondhand and vintage luxury market. I can imagine it may become more centralised if the brands themselves start purchasing and reselling used items at a large scale, with the advantage of the (exclusive?) blockchain data.
Super interesting topic! Definitely interested in seeing where this goes with the pre-loved market. (Fashionphile, etc).
Mulberry already trialling this already, you can part exchange used pieces for new collection or pay to have an older piece repaired. They will have these restored items available to purchase at selected locations
Thanks for sharing this info, I recently got my LV speedy 22 and has no date code. But I use NFC scan and it detected the microchip. More interestingly, the blockchain technology to track the LV supply chain logistics will be the game changer for all luxury industries. I know that blockchain technology is distributed verifications of records, in this case Aura Blockchain Consortium use their own blockchain to (quote from their webpage)
“
1 Proving authenticity & ownership of goods
2Accessing product history information
3 Strengthening client relationship through enhanced transparency
4 Accessing new services provided by the brands”
I wish they came up with the app that users can use to see their product info. I will try to get more info about the Aura blockchain and let you know 🥰🥰🥰🥰. Thanks again.
Yes, my daughter just bought me a LV piece for an early birthday gift on the Louis Vuitton website.
She bought it, but it is now mine. I don’t plan to sell,or return it. No date code. Very interesting concept.☺️
Isabelle, excellent investigative reporting.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🌸🌼🌸
If what you are saying is true on the tracking. *I do NOT like this & it sounds EVIL to me.* For the brands to resell their own Preloved items, at this moment I think this is a great idea.
Outside of the fashion houses, I see PRELOVED MARKET & the RESALE MARKET. Preloved at Preloved prices I LOVE. RESALE at PREMIUM prices... *I'm NOT a fan of it at all and believe this is the reason for many of these changes.*
Hmmmm, the “stolen” feature concerns me. Am I the only one thinking scammers could take advantage of that somehow?
depends how the transfer works and what happens if chip removed but typically scammers always find ways, hope they don't!
According to LV the chip does not record the personal information of the buyer. The SAs and CAs do not have the ability to write any information about the buyer on the chip once it has been sewn into the bag. So how would it store information on reselling?
About time luxury brands started embedding such technology💙
So we can only sell it through them? Cause how do they know who's the next owner if we sell ourselves?
I don’t think they care who the current owner is . The chips are merely to confirm that the item is authentic.
@@sharonozvenom yeah thats what I thought too but she mentioned in this video that they can track down who owns the bag and stuff too
Thank you so much for doing this video. I was very confused 🤷♀️ about all this. Is Chanel doing this too?
Yes apparently they are;)
Thanks for covering this topic, very informative
They can have information about first owner only. If person resell it to whomever in the secondhand market, the chip wont record it , unless item is brought to lv for repair etc.. so having whole purchased history and all owners is not possible..
💕 Wouldn't it be awesome if the bags could be tracked so precisely? Xx
Hi I am new to your channel. Great content I did see Mels video. I totally agree with your conclusion. She was very aggressive also I didn't understand about her reselling packaging. I still think when what you want is taken away the desire is made stronger. Car salesman do that all the time. It also is a game. I live in S. CA I went to a high end mall yesterday and looked in the Hermes window only 1 person in the store with an SA. I didn't have an appt. but I thought what the hay I will wait in line awhile. I didn't get asked in. My preloved Hermes Evelyn was on my shoulder and that was all I wanted anyway. I get very impatient with games sometimes.
Hi , I bought one last week, but my SA told me even she scan the micro chip, she won’t tell me the bag information, I don’t know why, so weird
This is very interesting. Looking to see how it will affect the pre loved market.
I like the microchip thing however it would be kind of difficult to transfer an item to another person....what if its a legit reseller, a gift, somebody died etc ...
Nways for reseller market eventhough u don't have anymore the physical date code. U can still inspect the item if its legit or not
so where is the checking of a lux product that it is genuine? I can't find any app or site to authenticate them , or does this AURA still in progress?
Does Saint Laurent and Gucci already do this?
You may be onto something. LVMH could start its own version of FASHIONPHILE or Rebag.
I think that’s the idea of the chip
they could easily buy fashionphile if they would sell
Will you be able to clean the bag?
I don’t think it’s going to impact replica market too much. Some people sell replicas trying to pass them as authentic for an authentic price in attempt to scam the buyer. Most people buying replicas are entering into the transaction knowing it’s a replica. There are websites, Instagram accounts, stores (canal street in NY) dedicated to this market.
I would not be confident to buy pre loved from someone if there is only a microchip that I am unable to authenticate ( if only a lv store can authenticate ) .
It would certainly make current owners of authentic/ original luxury goods more assured of the exclusivity of the purchases.
Am I the only one think it seems too good to be true? And if the bag was sold to someone else, unless that someone went to LV for repair or whatever, how would LV updated from their system for the new owner? Same as stolen goods. I think this is more to fight counterfeit then preloved market, at least for now
Hopefully it’ll be as you guess, that’ll be great for all of us.
Ummm the stolen part it’s a little strange. How does LV or Chanel will keep track of that I don’t know 🤷🏼♀️.
Great video thank you for providing this information
These are great news, a sea change!!!
Makes sense why chanel Reduced its lifetime warranty on bags to 5 years - after that they could buy it back, restore it and release it again
In Australia at least consumer law includes an implied warranty, given the price of Chanel bags, they still basically have a lifetime warranty on workmanship & I would expect significantly longer than 5 years on materials if the original owner (the person who purchased it from the boutique) wants to push the issue. The small sample of case law I have read is quite interesting & penalties can extremely hefty for any business who even attempts to deny legislated consumer rights.
Can SAs really scan the chip and show us? I asked my SA in malaysia apparently he said it is internal and he cant show me the details.
Do u have Chanel SA contact to share?
Thank you for this information 🌺
wow like a pet microchip...i like it!!! Brilliant!!! 😂
Very interesting. I believe Coach has already started getting into the vintage/pre-loved market. It would make sense to do that like you mentioned.
The "other" designer brands they will make it available for will be problably those under the LVMH group 😁
Wont these scammers find a way to manipulate these chips?
Informative video 📷
Great video
it would be great if they would do both a physical and digital date code, so that you could still see where and when your item was made, but also there could be a "double check" between the physical and digital date codes :)
this is interesting
I like you top you look beautiful and very pretty 😍😘💕
