      I don't mean this to be disrespectful but why is it that many black people talk about needing to be around people of color? There are SO many other racial groups in the U.S. but you rarely hear them talking like that. We don't have any all-Asian or all-Hispanic universities. Everyone else just kind of melds together but black people seem to want to separate themselves and then call everyone else racist. And why do many call each other brothers and sisters? Imagine how it would sound if a white person talked of their "white brothers and sisters." They'd call them a white supremacist.

      Scarlett Rose c'mon you can't really be that ignorant on purpose. And you believe OUR media? Lol race issue aside that let's me know part of why you are still so ignorant. The only way to know what's happening in the world is to branch out and examine your surroundings on your own without bias and without limiting your scope. The media lies to us with choreographed images and pre-written stories. You should at least know that much.

      Scarlett Rose Your entire argument is poorly thought out. By your logic, we could say that all white people shoot up schools and movie theaters or are serial killers or are KKK members. Stereotypes are just that... stereotypes. They are not accurate portrayals of ever member of a certain race . I'm a black woman and I am beautiful, talented and educated and so are all of the people of color that I surround myself with and I'll be damned if I have to listen to ignorant people like you make generalizations about every person of my race.

      Actually Caitlyn did respond to your inaccurate argument, looks like you just chose to ignore her first message since you had no rebuttal. The fact that you think SOME of the black people you know represent ALL black people is clear evidence that your capactiy for rational thought is severely limited. Especially when, like Caitlyn said, you're commenting on a video that actually is positive and is a more accurate reflection of the type of people I and many other black people surround themselves with which are educated, professional, conscience black men and women who can have a good time without being as you put it criminals and thugs. Either you're a troll trying to get a rise out of people or you really are just that ignorant as I've seen you make posts like this on other positive black music videos. Whatever the case may be, you can have a seat. Everyone reading your posts understands quite clearly that you are just foolish.

    My favorite part of the entire song is at 2:41, the melody on the lines "Baby talking on the side/As the world spins around" is just so unbelievably excellent. I'm a huge sucker for using the leading tone in the melody of a minor key song. When she hits "as the world spins around" it gives me chills. Perfectly contours the bVI - V motion. Just unreal what a good songwriter she is.

If parents don't want their kids seeing music videos like that, then they need to put parental controls on their kid's devices or something, but it's not the artist's problem. If you are bothered that there aren't a lot of white people in this music video... well, tough luck! Now you know how WE feel, never being represented well in YOUR media. Janelle Monáe is INCREDIBLE and makes us feel proud and represented in the light that we deserve, and if you self-centered attention-hungry racists have a problem with that, get over it real quick. Go watch someone else's video with what you're looking for (it's easy to find one) instead of spewing your hatred here, on a fun, energetic, and classy video of a beautiful black woman embracing our culture proudly and gorgeously, unlike MOST mainstream artists.

      Keith Japp She's making a music video to show the pride and beauty in our race. Why don't you complain when people like Iggy Azalea and Taylor Swift do the same thing? Why do people only call it a problem when Janelle does it? She's not even excluding white people on purpose (even though the white media excludes black people on purpose); it's a music video showcasing a fictional black sorority with pride and beauty.
      Plus, don't blame ME for the problem; I only made this comment because people were pissed off that Janelle only has a few white people in the video. I wasn't the one to bring it up; a few WHITE people were the first to bring it up. I didn't even notice it until they angrily brought it up and called Janelle racist for it. LOL, you're mad at the wrong kind of person. Don't complain on MY comment if it's a problem to you; complain on the comments of people calling Janelle racist for not having white people in her video.

    • @MrFBluntz
      @MrFBluntz 9 років тому +21

      Keith Japp The problem with your comment is that youre victimizing yourself.. why do all white people do that? Make it about themselves.. I dont get it.
      There will never be true equality between white and black people.
      oh and heads up. Black people cant be racist....

    • @maddywoo13
      @maddywoo13 9 років тому +31

      MrFBluntz No. Black sociologist chiming in here: when we're talking about racism it gets really technical. We have break it into two prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is basically an attitude, and black people and other races can be most definitely prejudiced. One thing black people and other races cannot be is discriminatory because that refers to having the power and access to deny a people resources and avenues for advancements in life which is what you SHOULD be referring to about whites and this concept of racism because that's where the privilege and shaping of stereotypes and media imagery toward other ethnicities come into play here--it comes from the group in power which are white people.
      Back to the victimization, that's actually a pretty complex answer. Most white people today don't want to acknowledge that they hold the privilege in this society because it villianizes them and we--I'm talking about all of us--all need something to villianize to make us validate our existence. It's not right to villainize a person that hasn't done anything wrong, we accept this idea. So when we get into their history (white people) of taking a race, dehumanizing them and building this entire system where they will be treated as a second class or less opposed to the people who started this, that's about one of the worst things you ever do in life. That's why the Jews regarded Hitler as The Devil incarnate and this is why Germans, who mostly blindly followed him because they were so financially desperate would rather not talk about him.
      Coming back to America, here, in present day, white people want to think that ok since slavery is gone all that other stuff like systemic domination via stereotyping and granting them privilege is too but that is clearly not the case. Not the case at all.
      I have been studying this, in addition to history and people of history and societies for over 5 years now and I'll probably spend the rest of my life trying to get down to this but the bottom line is, what seems like a simple mystery to you really isn't so when you start to investigate it. I could write a series set of books about this and the answer wouldn't satisfy most. All you can do is know and understand the basics. UA-cam isn't the place to type all that out.

      I can't agree more. Maybe nowadays ppl care less about quality than in the past. But in the past there were not actually so many shitty artists and songs to choose from, while nowadays commercial music dominates the market. Apart from that, quality music has been always less popular bcs commercial artists make hits acceptable for every ear and especially targeted for the youth, while some genres like jazz for example, require your full attention and understanding of the music :)

    Everything about this song and video is absolute perfection. Those 9.1m views (as of Sept. 2023) should be 91m at least. I'll never get over what a good video this is. The aesthetic, the energy, the choreography, the cameos, and the fact that it seems like everyone there is actually having fun and not just acting. And her main look in this video (the black and white letterman jacket) is iconic. And everyone did such a fantastic job really selling the whole thing - the dancers, the extras, everything. Just perfect.

    • @inflatable2
      @inflatable2 9 років тому +17

      She is indeed a bit underrated.. Although 900K views in just 5 days is not bad, Katy Perry gets 10x the views on her new video released the same day.. That's not because Kety Perry makes better music, that's just the power of the musicindustry and mainstream media.. Janelle Monáe does not have such a huge marketingmachine behind her, she is not played everywhere and as a result not as known.. But she is a whole different "product" anyway, probably a bit to complicated to become real big in the mainstream..

    • @writerb5001
      @writerb5001 9 років тому +21

      inflatable2 I don't think it's complicated at all. You're right Katy Perry does get WAY more views, So does, Niki Minaj, Lady Gaga, etc.Why is that though? I PERSONALLY think it's because of the large amount of sex appeal that those other artist put in their videos. Don't get me wrong Janelle is a VERY sexy/ attractive woman but while other people put sex appeal at the forefront of their vids JM lets her talent speak for itself and that's why I also feel she is underrated as well.

    • @inflatable2
      @inflatable2 9 років тому +8

      Writer B Besides that, to go into maybe a bit more touchy thing about her.. She still seems to mainly appeal to a black crowd, and then in particular females, especially in the USA.. I mean, just look at who is mainly responding to this video again.. That offcourse is not really a surprise looking at her background, the group she is in and the (political) messages she puts out.. To me as a white male from Europe it's not really an issue, I'm still a big fan of her because of who she is and what she does no matter if she is black, white, yellow or whatever and talks a lot about female empowerment.. Although sometimes it does make me feel a bit like I do not really belong as a fan, the exact same sentiment I think is also holding back the mainstream media from promoting her in a bigger way aswell.. Although she already has appeared in plenty of mainstream media it still seems like the black (female) community is claiming her in a big way.. But like I said, I do not really care, I bought all her albums and I promote and adore her..
      Please excuse my bad English (if so), not a native speaker..

    Janelle Monae is the prettiest black woman, embracing her natural hair. If more younger kids, no matter what race, saw her, they'd feel more confident. Asians wouldn't feel that they needed to bleach their skin to be pretty, frizzy-curly haired kids wouldn't feel like they needed to straighten their hair to be beautiful, and Latinos would be comfortable with having indigenous brown roots, instead of Spaniard/Portuguese.

    • @whatreallymatters571
      @whatreallymatters571 8 років тому +5

      +Alexia Colette Exactly. Not to mention male singers are in constant competition as well. Our society picks and chooses its battles. She just like many black singers with real messages are pushed to the side. And it's not only because of the media agenda but because people just don't want to hear a truth that doesn't pertain to them. Why would you pay more to see Nicki when you can not only get a show but a message from Monea? People are ridiculous these days. I wonder if they know popular musicians have dumbed down music to get more sells and it's actually worker. It's been shown that music with meaningless lyrics sell more.

    We primates do not deserve such an artist. Thank you, Janelle, for visiting our planet.

    Her hair is stunning. Why did Black women ever think their natural hair wasn't beautiful? I call for all sistas to go natural NOW.

      Oh idk maybe 300+ year of white people telling us it's not, and every commercial, ad, magazine in america telling us we need to look "white". That's like asking someone who's been told they are stupid and will never be shit every day of their life why they're think they are stupid and will never be shit.

      Rebekah Hutson Some things are simply self evident. To me, Black women look far more real and beautiful with their real hair, especially their real hair unrestrained. Who gives a fish about what white people think. Why does the earth revolve around what freaking white people think. In fact, I see white men all the time with Black women with natural hair, and they don't mind. >>> Black women have done this to THEMSELVES.

      Phoenixspin Has nothing to do with what white people think, it has to do with white people in power brainwashing black people for 300+ years, stripping black people of their culture, killing black people for their culture, teaching us to hate everything about themselves. If you think that has zero effect on people you need to take a fucking psychology 101 class. Also, you can have a weave and still be natural, how about you stop bashing black women for whatever they choose to do to their hair? I swear other black people are causing more fucking damage to blacks self esteem that any white person.

      Rebekah Hutson So in fact you acknowledge the effect of Black people pulling each other down. That's what has happen in our history. Even today, older Black women criticize younger Black women for wearing natural hair. Go back and look at old Jets and see the original ads for hair relaxers. This was Blacks doing the damage to Blacks. Blacks care far more about about Black hair (and looking white) than White folks ever thought about it. And you are twisting my words around. I spend my post praising the natural beautify of Black women yet you say I am damaging their self esteem? I am trying to give Black women POSITIVE self esteem by simply stating the truth that they are as fine as heaven with their real hair. If a woman puts on a weave her self esteem has been damaged long before she ever ran across one of my posts. Girl, let your hair free and free your mind. Do you think Janelle is extremely beautiful natural or not? It would be a crime against humanity for her to weave a weave. Weaves are simply coverings for weak minds.

      Phoenixspin No. Bashing women is not giving self esteem. A weave does not equal low self esteem, it's a fucking hairstyle, some people are in transition, some people simply want a new hairstyle, why is every race on earth allowed to do shit with their hair but black people is "self hate". The natural hair movement is not about bashing women in order to get them to do natural, it's about education, and lifting them up, and again YOU CAN BE NATURAL AND HAVE A WEAVE, all natural means is no chemicals. Black people do not oppress black people. Black people did not bring themselves over here and strip themselves of their culture, and bashing and murder each other for practicing it. Black people like you have clearly been so damaged that you feel the need to bash the rest of us when we do anything you don't like. You asked why black people ever thought their hair was not beautiful, your answer is in a history book.
