  • The Detroit Lions have several players who could be named among the best at their position, but according to PFF Kerby Joseph is not one of them. So Meko and Ryan are here to discuss this egregious snub and the rest of the safety ranking in a new form of "Listcasts" which originated on the PODcast.

My impression of Kerby Joseph last year is that he freelanced too much and was often out of position and therefore didn’t have much effect stopping the other teams passing attack. Also, that he was an awesome tackler, I guess against the run. I read a few articles where Lions coaches were critical of his freelancing. When our coaches are publicly critical (rare!) there is probably a big problem.

Kerby is in the 40-50 range. A decent Safety 2. Solid Starter. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get reduced snaps this year with Iffy and Branch getting the majority of snaps on the backend. Got tired of seeing Kerby throw his hands up and point his finger. And his celebration mid INT return was BUSH LEAGUE. He has work to do.

When Rodgers left the Packers for Jets. Kirbys performance dropped. He was no longer Rodgers Favorite Receiver.

Lol that’s a good one. But he did still have 4 picks this past year

@@PrideofDetroit Only the Herbert pick in LA was an impressive play. The other three INTs were balloon balls from Jimmy G and Nick Mullens. He's a starting caliber guy but it's not a controversy he isn't considered a top NFL safety. I think the frustration for us Lions fans is we see the potential in him to be a top safety but his inability to consistently do the simple things at safety are holding him back. If you get the natural playmaking ability he has with taking proper running angles to the ball, wrapping up to tackle // not diving at ankles, and supporting corners on deep routes over the top the sky is the limit. I also believe some of this will improve for him with better corner play this year.

I have to agree with that assessment. IMO Kerby regressed last season. His tackling was terrible and his coverage did not look very good. Too much emphasis on going for the big play.
Ifeatu Melifonwu is our best Safety, we just need to see some consistency and durability from him.
If the Lions plan to play Brian Branch more at Safety this year, I can see Kerby being our #3 Safety behind those two.
So yes, he is not even close to being in the top quartile of Safeties.

Was Kerby a terrible tackler? I missed that…
I would describe our entire secondary last year as “desperate chaos”. I expect chaos again this year, but I’m hoping that this year it is managed, controlled, and planned. Will Aaron Glenn be able to scheme up an effective chaos? Utilizing Kerby and everyone else to maximum effectiveness? It is going to be fascinating to watch.

@@MichaelDevereaux-zr3pthow could you miss it, nearly every big play against us featured a Kirby Joseph half hearted body clap into the ball carrier with no effect. Kirby's overall movement style could literally be called ragdoll. Dude is always flopping around, with his arms dangling in a very non-athletic hilarious way. You want your DB's to be low and purposeful with their movement, like a cat. Kirby runs around like a toddler who hasn't mastered walking yet..

I agree with you on all counts but one! I can’t say all DBs, I believe Branch had an outstanding rookie year until his injury and Iffy when he was finally but in the box and used his speed and size had a good year and hopefully he continues to improve

Kerb is a big play maker but he's pretty bad in man coverage. If I had to pick just two safeties for the Lions is Iffy and Branch.

Kerby can tackle and take advantage of QB mistakes, but he's not good in coverage. Backup TE's was routing Kerby up consistently the last 2 seasons.

When you guys critique someone else's work like this, either a link in the description or in a pinned comment to the original article would be appreciated. Having said that, as Kirby's the main topic I agree with most others - he's not a top S. Now Kyle Hamilton! Wasn't he drafted the same year as Jamo? Whatever year it was, he was still available when the Lions were on the clock after a trade up and I thought yes! We're going to get Hamilton! And then I sat there with my mouth open stunned with the pick.

Kerby a safety 3 needs to have better pre and post snaps reads get caught out of place to much trying to anticipate a route mainly the wrong route

Kerby was asked to do way too much last year after showing really good growth his rookie year. He had to try and hold up that secondary with walker... i love walker but he isn't a starting safety. Way too much to ask of a sophomore

I think Kerby freelanced way too much last year! Hoping he would have others cover his mistakes on coverage!!!

I’m with you on that one. I think he tried too hard to make plays last year and it led to him being out of position on some big plays. With that said…he did still have 4 INTs 🤷🏽‍♂️

Iffy will be a top safety by the end of this year, mark my words. I really wanted his blackout jersey a couple hours after they dropped just because I weirdly like him so much, but those aren’t even being sold

If you look at the starting 11 on D, Kerby is the worst player based on last year's performance.

  • @TheBestPracticeSwingInGolf

Unfortunately he's not a good enough run defender. He's got crazy range and play making ability but I think they're going to use BB to help mask his inability to tackle by having BB play nickel on 1st and 2nd down and SS on 3rd, allowing Kerby to play exclusively center field... Where he will succeed. But it's all because BB is going to play all over the field. BB will be the position less key to our secondary.
It's going to be a stingy, stingy secondary especially with the assent of Jack and Barnes at the intermediate level.

  • @innerspace56

Oh he's top 5 alright. Top 5 young men on some sucker sh*t. This dude turns himself into a b*tch missile and flies into an opponents ankles when they are looking the other way. Hitting a defenseless receiver is one thing, but whacking them in the lower legs when they can't even see you coming just creates the kinda karma that swings back against us at the worst time.
Even during head-on tackles this dude dips his head WAY too much. When we see him perform a basic fundamental head-up full wrap tackle to the ground, it will be the first time. Stafford wasn't lying when he scolded Kirby for being "dirty as sh*t". It doesn't take the all-22 film to see this crap either, just go watch the basic lions highlights on youtube.
We need the coaches to teach this dude to tackle, because right now I can't even see him helping us on special teams.

You’re not going to hear me defend Kerby’s tackling. I think it’s very bad and something he needs to focus on not just to protect his opponents but to keep himself from harm. However, I don’t think he’s a dirty player. Just not a good technical tackler

@@PrideofDetroitMeko I think your judgment is possibly being clouded by your personal attachment to this player, and let me admit this right now- I did as well. At the end of his rookie year I was thrilled with 31. Those picks to straight up END Rodger's career? It just doesn't get any better than that as a lions fan.
But then I went back and watched the basic NFL UA-cam highlights of every lions game after the season and I noticed several major problems right away. The sloppy ragdoll style of movement, the half-assed body clap tackle attempts (where most opposing ballcarriers just kept on running like nothing happened) and the super dirty horizontal whacks into guys ankles. In 2023 all of these problems actually got worse!
I grew up playing a ton of tackle football, mostly in the fields and parks around my hometown. I'm sure many reading this did the same, including you Meko. Do I even have to explain what we did whenever a new guy showed up and started hitting people low when they weren't looking? Yeah. That is what is coming for Kirby and likely our valuable offensive weapons as well, it's just basic math.

Reading through these comments I hope it’s become apparent to yall that your fan base doesn’t appreciate your completely biased and fanboy takes. Yall are going to keep losing views with Meeko’s (and Morgan’s) fanboy takes.

  • @MrAndrewLawrence420
    @MrAndrewLawrence420 3 місяці тому

Zero % surprised at Meeko’s fanboy take here (that’s what he does best) but a little bit surprised with Ryan. No shit he’s NOT a top 32 safety. If you disagree w that article, congratulations, you too are a based fanboy.
He was out of position on more than 50% of his snaps. He kept trying to make plays instead of being a cohesive part of the defense. He was probably beaten over the top more times than any other safety in the league last season.
Y’all are really letting a couple of give-away heaves by desperate qbs give yall the wrong impression of Joseph as a safety.
Joseph is the reason they’re going to need Branch to play more safety snaps
Besides Jacobs Joseph was the worst defender on the team last season… and it was not particularly close.

This video isn’t even watchable if you’re starting with the premise that Joseph not being on the list is the biggest surprise. You lose all credibility of whatever you’re going to follow that up with.
“Last year wasn’t his best year” No shit. But he was garbage last year. And if that’s not your starting point, you’re being intellectually dishonest & just completely biased.

Kerby is rated low because the overall secondary was bad. He will be better this year, as will the 2ndary overall. Part of the ranking is based on perception.

Worst tackler ever! He is afraid of getting humiliated on T.V. He will not tackle head on. So many times he just fails in open field tackles. Good hands but TERRIBLE tackler.
