Stephen John Fry (born 24 August 1957) is an English comedian, actor, writer, presenter, and activist.
After a troubled childhood and adolescence, during which he was expelled from two schools and spent three months in prison for credit card fraud, he secured a place at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. While at university, Fry became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, where he met his long-time collaborator Hugh Laurie. As half of the comic double act Fry and Laurie, he co-wrote and co-starred in A Bit of Fry & Laurie, and took the role of Jeeves (with Laurie playing Wooster) in Jeeves and Wooster.
Fry's acting roles include a Golden Globe Award-nominated lead performance in the film Wilde, Melchett in the BBC television series Blackadder, the title character in the television series Kingdom, a recurring guest role as Dr. Gordon Wyatt on the crime series Bones, and as Gordon Deitrich in the dystopian thriller V for Vendetta. He has also written and presented several documentary series, including the Emmy Award-winning Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, which saw him explore his mental illness. He is also the long-time host of the BBC television quiz show QI.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

It suits them that we do not have it. We have a heavily doctored right leaning system, created by Cameron and his ilk to serve him and his cronies. Starting with having to register to vote, through gerry mandered districts to the insertion of ideologues in the BBC and other media, the judiciary, the constabulary and into handing power to the latest band of tech industrialists to do with as they please. When the country takes a giant swing back toward the left, it will be neither too soon or too much in my humble opinion, because right wing politics does not serve the greater good, it never has and it never will.

Stephen rises to the occasion with his usual casual effortless humanity. 99% of others, maybe, would have lessened their admiration after Russell spoke out about Stephens interview with the Irish interviewer about God. Brand also doesn't exercise restraint in his vocabulary either, and he'll use very obscure and superfluous wording which can often - at least for me anyway - obscure his argument. • @Connelly90

I think that people are reluctant to think about Russell Brand and Stephen Fry in the same sphere based mostly on some kind of bias they have within them, one which allows them to think of Brand as "lesser" simply because of the way he looks, or the way he talks, or the way he presents his points with some goofy comedy sprinkled here-and-there.
Brand and Fry are two similar creatures. They both started off in comedy. They both have done some acting to varying degrees of success. They both champion very left-leaning political ideas and campaign actively for similar causes. Now they are both figures who are expected to respond to the goings on of the world whenever prompted.
When I look at Russell and Fry I don't see a "fool and a gentleman" as some one here have so kindly put it; I see two very similar men from very different backgrounds.

Russell in particular, spends most of his time actively campaigning against the likes of the Rothschild family, and has laid HEAVY criticism on Israel, calling for a boycott of goods from the country in response to their actions in Gaza
Stephen Fry is one of the most prominent campaigners against discrimination of homosexuals. He has also laid HEAVY critisism on Israel.

Not sure how successful they will be, judging by response of todays generation, despite Brands efforts.

I don't get the bitterness people have for people like Russell Brand. So what if he's not a "proper intellectual?" It's irrelevant. I mean, most of his ideas are taken from books written by experts - "proper intellectuals," in this case - anyway, so all he's doing is making those ideas way more accessible to a wider audience by spreading them in an entertaining and informative way. It's a very noble and compassionate thing to do, really. I don't get the utterly bitter misery displayed by some people who dislike him for doing something that's undeniably coming from a place of goodness. Yeah, he's not Noam Chomsky, but, at the end of the day, so what? At least he's doing something, when others aren't even bothering.

    • @minkytak3156
      @minkytak3156 9 років тому +24

Jim X David Mitchell is a conformist square. As demonstrated by his appearance on Channel 4's dumbed-down election night coverage, he'd rather make witty quips attacking all politicians in the name of "balance", rather than pin his colours to any genuine values. I thought the pairing of him and Paxman would be refreshing, but sadly it was without substance. If he genuinely cared you'd think he'd make the odd controversial statement here and there. Yet for a man who based an entire (heavily sponsored) youtube series around his "opinions" he somehow manages to remain perfectly middle of the road. Progressive, he is not.
And he's only famous because of Peepshow... his own comedy sucks.

SteveM Balance is obviously ideal for newspaper reports, televised news and Wikipedia.
But a celebrity who exercises "balance" (fake balance) because they are afraid to be honest about their political opinions is just pathetic in their attempt to appeal to masses.
Stephen Fry is not afraid to give opinions, however controversial, nor is Russell Brand. To compare these two with David Mitchell is ludicrous.
I think the OP confused their similarity simply because they both speak with pronounced accents. Mitchell is hardly a torchbearer for progressive political discussion... his contribution on election night was frankly embarrassing.

+Jeff Rey I think he finds Brand charismatic and attractive, and I'm sure he's actually met him at least once at some point. I reckon Fry's the kind of guy who finds it very hard to criticise people he knows.
The reason I say this is because his commitment to science, Enlightenment humanism, democratic engagement and his overall classically liberal, rationalist mindset is so at odds with Brand's dogmatic, scattershot, reactionary, illiberal-left approach to...well, everything...and that Fry's understandable personal affection for the guy is the reason why he was so reluctant to criticise him.
After all, Brand has two sides to him - the personal and the political. The former side is(or 'was' - according to some reports) apparently very charming and likeable. The latter side is puddle-deep, counter-productive, reactionary and utterly, robotically dogmatic. It would be hard for Fry to disentangle them in order to criticise one whilst praising the other.
The idea of Brand being a 'public intellectual' however is just flat-out mental.

Peter Callaghan I don’t quite know what your ex has to do with this, nevertheless working at an institutionalised propaganda machine for 23 years is hardly comparable to a man who came from an abusive, drug fuelled, poverty stricken background, overcoming many hurdles and ending up wealthy and highly respected in both his field and to those of whom he has gained political influence. And another man who has suffered from deep depression, and prejudice due to his sexuality, however has become possibly the most highly respected, and influential men in both sides of the political spectrum. And I must say being respected in both sides of the political spectrum is by far the most difficult thing an intellectual can do!

Back in 2015 when this video was made, I thought the the same way about Russell Brand. Lately Brand has been attempting to shed his comedian persona in an effort to be taken more seriously as a pundit and a thinker. But in that effort he's become very hypocritical in many of his positions. And his obsession with the super rich and successful entrepreneurs borders on hatred which is at odds with his oft repeated statement that "I have no axe to grind with anyone and no affiliation with any position on the left-right spectrum".
In a UA-cam debate with Candace Owens on capitalism in 2018, he was embarrassed and outclassed by Owens. The fact that he lost the debate could be attributed to the fact that he was at a great disadvantage to start with since the position he was trying the argue for was pretty well indefensible. But in that situation you still should at least put forward propositions that are logically connected. But he just couldn't do it. And in that interview he used a technique of resorting to comedy when he lost a point in the argument. He would make a proposition, Owens would shoot it down by showing how ridiculous it was and then Brand, realizing he had no possible comeback would instead make a joke about it as if to imply he was only kidding. This kind of laughing it off works for some people, but for most of us it just showed that while Brand wants to be taken seriously as an intellectual and a thinker, alas, he is really just a comedian.

It's just wonderful how Stephen Fry answers the audience questions as to his position to Russell Brand. I'm very fond of Russell B., but I think that Stephen Fry is a much more balanced, compassionate, and indeed a more spiritually whole person than Brand - and that is kind of ironic, because Fry is frank and clear about his atheism, while Brand talks a lot about spirituality, meditation, consciousness, ect......

An intellectual by definition is someone able to display the faculty of reasoning and understanding - Fry has the ability to present his acquired knowledge in a manner that makes him appear academic but what original theories has he come up with? Brand on the other hand throws terms like 'paradigm' around like intellectual confetti to fool others into thinking he's an original thinker
