  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a 1986 American teen comedy film written, co-produced and directed by John Hughes, and co-produced by Tom Jacobson. The film stars Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller, a high-school slacker who spends a day off from school, with Mia Sara and Alan Ruck. Ferris regularly "breaks the fourth wall" to explain techniques and inner thoughts.
Hughes wrote the screenplay in less than a week. Filming began in September 1985 and finished in November 1985. Featuring many landmarks, including the Sears Tower and the Art Institute of Chicago, the film was Hughes' love letter to Chicago: "I really wanted to capture as much of Chicago as I could. Not just in the architecture and landscape, but the spirit."
Released by Paramount Pictures on June 11, 1986, the film became one of the top-grossing films of the year, receiving $70.1 million over a $5.8 million budget, and was enthusiastically acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

I used to think this, but his movies glorified wealthy people, and rarely had any minorities or people in the lower social economic strata. These movies worked because they weave a fantasy about how it is to live when you have money for an audience of people who are blue-collar and such. I’m not saying the movies are bad, but if some of these things had been addressed in the script, then they would be immensely better.

  • @rodafowa1279

This scene perfectly encapsulates why older movies are better than what's being made today. Studios would never take a chance on having this many actual human beings in a single scene. If they can't CGI it, it's not happening. Not to mention the emotion conveyed in the scene. Today, you're either supposed to laugh at weak, elementary humor, or feel crippling sadness. Happiness isn't something studios today want you to feel.

The production only had one take in downtown Chicago for the scene. The city of Chicago only allowed bthem enough time, which was one day, to completely set up and completely dismantle. There were more cameras set up for one scene of a movie that had ever been done before so to be able to get every angle and every impromptu move by the crowd. It’s unimaginable to think that something that large scale could be pulled off with one take and come out so absolutely perfect. It’s one of the greatest scenes in comedy in the modern era. Hail to Ferris Bueller.

It's just so fun and full of charm, and it shows what Ferris Bueller is all about. Yeah, he gets his way throughout the movie, but his intentions aren't malicious, he's just a kid who wants to have fun with the time he has with his friends.
That's the most likeable depiction of a teenager I've seen on film, cuz I could only imagine kids seeing this movie and wanting to be like Ferris. Riding a cherry red ferrari, getting into a fancy restaurant, dancing ON the parade float! I know I'd wanna do all that.
Plus, look at the way everyone in the crowd is dancing with him! He's not only giving his friends a memorable time, he gave the whole city a time to remember and I love that!

I'm listening to Paul Hirsch's autobiography, "A long time ago in a cutting room far, far away...." (via audiobook), right now and he's at the part discussing the parade scene.
Paul edited "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Footloose", episodes IV and V of the Star Wars movies and many other films over the years. It's cool listening to him talk about how he put scenes together. This particular scene had a lot of jump cuts which worked out really well when put together. He said there were 3 takes of the "Twist & Shout" song used to get the right amount of coverage needed. He said the release of the balloons happened after the 3rd take and the energy seen in the movie was completely authentic even after the same song being played 3 times.
I recommend others who love these movies to either find the audiobook or the book itself. Hirsch doesn't narrate the audiobook himself, but the narrator (Richard Ferrone) makes you forget its not Paul.
