  • During a discussion with Pastor David Johnson about Tim Alberta's book The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, I asked him how Christian leaders can push back on the constant messages their listeners are hearing that link the MAGA movement to Christianity.
His answer: stick to the biblical text. His example turned into an epic rant that got right to the heart of the issue. Every Christian should hear this message.

For a while I was attending what you might call an evangelical mega church in Florida, but I was really bothered by the fact that they, on the one hand, never in any way acknowledged Pentecost (the anniversary of the founding of the Church), but made a HUGE deal every year out of the Fourth of July, the anniversary of the founding of the USA, with a sermon that rewrote history to suggest that all the founders were evangelical Christians and that the separation of Church and State was somehow an affront to God. I think a disturbingly high percentage of people in this country have their religion and their politics so jumbled up that they've lost all track of where one stops and the other begins, as is now perfectly symbolized by the God Bless America Bible that Trump is selling, with the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, etc., included as if it's part of scripture.

This is the big lie of evangelicals that the country was founded as a Christian country. It sure wasn’t, treaty of Tripoli 1797. The founders were deists, but they had a deep hatred of religion because of hundreds of years of political wars in the name of religion in Europe. Most were masons. Look at the back of the dollar bill. Those are Masonic symbols. DC was laid out according to Masonic principles. Separation of church and state means what it says.

Jesus said my kingdom is not of this world and He certainly wasn't about establishing a Christendom. I don't see Trump as a savior but following this talk's logic, it appears their counsel that the Church should walk away from the culture, for it couldn't be to support a party that has completely walked away from Judeo-Christian principles. It appears to me to that the choice between the two parties couldn't be more stark. One has literally written God out of its platform, takes across the board stances contrary to sound Biblical teaching and is totally worshipping at the altar of man. The other hasn't, the choice couldn't be more clear.

To the church of my youth,
What the hell did you expect me to do?
You told me to love my neighbors, to model the life of Jesus. To be kind and considerate, and to stand up for the bullied.
You told me to love people, consider others as more important than myself.
You taught me to sing "red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight."
We sang it together, pressing the volume pedal and leaning our hearts into the chorus. You said that “He loved all the children of the world”.
You told me to love my enemies, to even do good to those who wish for bad things. You told me to never "hate" anyone and to always find ways to encourage people.
You told me it's better to give than receive, to be last instead of first. To help the poor, the widow, the stranger at the gate.
You told me that Jesus looks at what I do for the least-of-these as the true depth of my faith. You told me to focus on my own sin and not to judge. You told me to be accepting and forgiving.
    So I paid attention.
    I took in every lesson.
And I did what you told me.
But now, you call me a libtard. A queer-lover. You call me "woke." A backslider.
You call me a heretic. You make fun of my heart. You mock the people I’m trying to help.
You say I’m a child of the devil.
You call me soft. A snowflake. A socialist. You shun the very people you told me to help.
What the hell did you expect me to do?
I thought you were serious, but apparently not.
You hate nearly all the people I love. You stand against nearly all the things I stand for. I'm trying to see a way forward, but it's hard when I survey all the hurt, harm, and darkness that comes in the wake of your beliefs and presence.
What the hell did you expect me to do?
I believed it all the way.
I'm still believing it all the way.
Which leaves me wondering, what happened to you?

That's absolutely correct. The first bricks for this road to perdition were laid down in the early 1980s. To his supreme credit Billy Graham recognized it (perhaps partially due to the fact that Richard Nixon abused their relationship and Graham was made wiser by the experience), and began to call out the marriage between the church and right leaning politics. (Read his quotes from Parade Magazine in February 1981). It is unfortunate that although he recognized the problem, he didn't school his son on it, who is a 100% dyed-in-the-wool MAGA nut. These philosophies are NOT compatible. (Mark 7:6-7, Matthew 22:37-38, Matthew 6:24, Colossians 3:5). Indeed, if you go far enough into MAGA land thinking, you're not even a Christian any more, really.
Every man and woman is going to be forced to choose. Is your lord Jesus, or is your lord some politician? There is no culture warfare issue that is worth losing your soul over. I fear far too many have already been lost because they were seduced by a lust for control and retribution. That option was never open to you. Jesus made it clear how he expected evangelism to work: Matthew 10:16. You cannot really evangelize if you have hate in your heart for your fellow man.

Yup, it’d be that same Bible which is more of an anthology or library than a single book. But yes it does contain some uncomfortable passages. And we can each read those passages as we see fit.
Tell me a complicated text or group of texts where we all read it the same way. Or something that isn’t seen through different lenses. I could use the Constitution, but that is similar and yet very different too. Even the Bible though, some Jews read the texts you cited one way. Another group another way. Christians obviously see certain OT texts as pointing to Christ, Jews don’t see those texts that way. And sects disagree with each other on interpretation. No different than the Satanic Temple followers reading things different from each other for their texts or progressives vs centrist liberals vs centrist conservatives vs MAGA reading the Constitution differently from each other.
The Bible is not literal interpretation only, but moral, allegorical, and anagogical interpretations.
And the OP said “you read the Bible the same way I do,” which means you have bad comprehension skills. Yes it’s that Bible, it’s how you read it, not what it is. How vs what. You came in with an anti religious bias and incorrectly assessed the topic. The anti religious bias is one thing, but your miscalculating the issue is like a middle schooler protesting against their parents and not fully understanding the world. It’s appropriate developmentally for an 6-8th grader. But that’s what it is: a 6-8th grade understanding of the Bible and religion.

I voted for Trump last time but then I started paying attention and, as a Christian, I started realizing people are worshiping him. I can no longer vote for Trump. I also noticed that the messiah the Jewish people were looking for was one who would vanquished them from Roman rule. They didn't recognize the messiah for who he is. Now we (well some) know the messiah but want, instead, a messiah that will "save " our worldly comforts. The Bible says if the end times to fear not for these things must come to pass and to LOOK UP in these times. I noticed that Maga followers are ruled by fear of losing this country and worldly goods. Instead of looking up and understanding that these things must come to pass, they give in to this fear, fight what is to come, and keep their eyes on worldly affairs. We can not serve two God's. Either we will love the one and hate the other. I've also noticed that those who follow Maga rarely truly know Biblical prophecy or most of the Bible as it is. They, instead, want to hear words of comfort from false prophets and false apostles. Words that make them "feel the spirit moving". If they don't feel things then the spirit isn't moving.... it's all run on human emotions and fears. Politicians know how to manipulate those things and control people. As much as I try to tell my friends, family, and church members this, it goes in one ear and out the other at bedtime. At worse, it truly makes them angry at me! I'm only telling them what the word of God says about listening to false prophets...

You voting for people that want nationwide late term abortion? You’re voting for people that destroy children’s lives because of money and pharmaceutical companies when there’s no science behind transgender and the people that invented that medicine that Europeans are running in the opposite direction. The Democrats are fascist the Aryans. If you vote for them, don’t tell me you were Christian because you’re not. And people that you say worship Trump they can actually tell you exactly why they support him. They can explain the policies. You can’t say that because the left doesn’t have any policies. All they do is Trump bad Democrat good. Project 2025? The founding fathers love most of it. One of the things they want to do is get rid of the department of education and the teachers unions. Guess what when Jimmy Carter created it we had a great school system. 30 years later we had a terrible school system. Kids graduate now and can’t even read or write. It was the teachers unions that kept schools shut down in blue states for two years because of Covid. You people are brainwashed. Wake up! You can't expect Holy Living from people who don't want it. DJT is not a messiah. I understand their fear and concern, but they have made him an idol. It's a personal walk with Jesus that drives us to change. They are blinded by fear. They are fearful of the AntiChrist. Most don't even realize that that is the case, some do. It's the whole New World Order BS too. In the end there will be a political leader that demands worship and restricts freedom, but Jesus will be back.

What evangelicals clearly omit when claiming that sinners need to be forgiven since we're all sinners, thus giving Trump a free pass for his crimes and sins, is that for divine forgiveness the sinner needs to feel sincere remorse (for each of his sins, not for getting caught for those) and be devoted to repent and make ammends for the rest of his life while never sinning again. I was taught that the Lord truly wants to forgive us all, but that He'd still won't without remorse and repentance.
Trump has no morals, so feels no guilt, no regrets (except regarding outcomes), no remorse, no need to repent and make amends and definitely no intention to never commit any sins again.

I cannot believe true evangelicals'd really believe that faith alone can be enough to have Christ wash away our sins on Judgenment Day. Not without sincere remorse and a lifetime of atonement. Redemption still has to be earned.
As I was taught, faith alone cannot is not and must not be enough. Even just being a good person wouldn't be enough. It has to be (at least) both. Which is preciaely why evangelicals are always on their evangelical mission: saving good persons by having them embrace christianity. Trying to be a good christian person, I experienced as hard work, every day. Because we have to atone for our sins for the rest of our lives. Jesus Christ died to wash away from our shoulders the burden of the sins from our forefathers, making us accountable only for our own sins, but accountable we remain, still continuously risking eternal damnation instead of eternal bliss.

I’m a non-believer, but I found this analysis refreshing. My thoughts aren’t meant as criticism, just critique. As an outsider, I wish that people of faith would focus more on showing me how to act rather than telling me how to act. So much current dialogue is about making laws to limit my freedom, instead of inspiring me to use my freedom for good. What I’m surrounded by daily is a barrage of forceful attempts to make me see myself as wrong, so that I’ll be open to revelation. That approach only drives people further away, because it comes off as looking down on a non-believer, rather than listening to them and knowing them. It is not inviting or welcoming. If the biblical god is real, then it seems to me that he sent his son to demonstrate to us how to succeed. The lesson in this story is that choosing Barabbas was the wrong path, and Jesus was literally showing them how to succeed peacefully. That god does not need “USA” to prevail, he just needs us all to simply be good. I don’t think he wants an American caliphate. What I’ve learned over time, though, is that real leadership succeeds by deeds, not speeches. Thank you, gentlemen. I would happily share a beer or iced tea with you any day. Jesus is Strong and powerful but at the same time meek and humble. For some that is not good enough. They want their leader to be a brute, a mean person who just doesn't take any crap from anyone. God's laws are what convict us of sin and make us realize that we need a Savior. The message of the Gospel is that only God is good. Therefore, in order to be good we have to admit that we're sinners in need of a Savior. Then, we are baptized as a sign to others that we have made the commitment to believe in Jesus, repent from our sins, and live for Him. "Lord, please guide and counsel our political leaders, reminding them of we the people, whom they represent." We don't have political conflict in our church because our pastor - our leadership - focuses all church activities on Jesus and the missions of Christendom. We operate under two directives. God above all, and love for others. It's the fulfillment of the law, according to the new covenant with Christ.

I was raised Presbyterian but I've been an atheist for a few decades now. What Pastor Dave Johnson says here is absolutely the best answer to the question of, "How can Christians support Donald Trump?" They're choosing Barabbas! The Jews in Jerusalem wanted a strong figure to take on the Romans, but what they got was a meek pious man riding a donkey preaching peace, so they liberated a brute instead. What an insightful take on Palm Sunday, the crucifixion, and their parallels in current events and politics.

Bingo!!! Its all based on perception and thanks to the fundamentalists, the perception that people have of Christianity is that they are not loving people who are more concerned about political power than following the teachings of Christ and are extremely selfish and materialistic and legalistic. Everything Christ railed against in his own culture. Thus, you are correct that the MAGA movement has hindered the ability to take the gospel msg of love to others. Especially, among the young, including Christian kids. If they continue, Christianity will no longer be relevant in this country.

@@hugotrevino2565 I’ve been saying for years that the maga movement was hindering the ability to spread the true gospel msg of love. I personally left the evangelical church in 2016 when I was told I was out of the will of God if I didn’t vote for Trump. Since then, I’ve found other routes to learn and grow in my spirituality. I’ve run into others who are turned off by Christian nationalism, especially the young. My favorite young barista calls herself a Christian but rarely goes to church because of the politics or doctrinal positions she knows are not correct. She is a very spiritually aware kind woman. There are many like her I’ve met.
This maga movement and the dominionists trying to turn America into a Christian theocracy to save the world are sadly deluded. Their embrace of Trump has caused a negative perception of Christianity that is causing many to leave the church or not want to have anything to do with it. Christianity, in my opinion, needs another reformation back to Christs teachings if it is to survive in this country.

Great analogy--choosing Barrabas over Christ! I understand that Evangelicals are saying that the meekness of Christ is passe' for our day. What they want is "somone with balls".
Trump has become an idol to the Evangelical community. They are evangelizing for Trump--not for Christ.
And, incidentally, rebuilding the third temple so Christ can come--that's not biblical. Christ said, "This gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world as a witness unto all nations. And then shall the end come!" He also said His Kingdom "is not of this world". The gospel of trump is not the gospel we should be advocating. We're to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and His love! That is our commission--not to manipulate government so a third temple gets built, so Jesus can come. And certainly not to coerce, or even force, everyone to subscribe to Christian values. (That's the way of the Inquisition of the Catholic church during the dark ages--not God's way).
One correction--there weren't synagogues during David's reign. Not until Judah was exiled to Babylon & the temple was destroyed. That's when synagogues were first built in Babylon as places of worship in lieu of the temple.

Great video. You're a 100% correct regarding Jesus riding in on the colt. It was a humble entrance that was not of a political "strong man." And I would add, this is one of the things that angered and disappointed Judas. Why? He was a Judean and didn't understand many of the things Jesus said and did. Why? Jesus was a Galilean who was Jewish by faith and used different figures of speech and wasn't politically minded in the way Judeans expected the Messiah to be. Granted, everyone was thinking of a political Messiah king as was taught would be the case. But Jesus was a Spiritual Messiah who thought on a universal level that was all-inclusive. None of Jesus followers understood this until after he died.
The modern MAGA fundamentalists definitely picked a modern day Barabbas.

It just something they do. And so it is in America, except "evangelicalism" is their national religion. Thank Jerry Falwell and the moral majority for that. Falwell got pissed that the government didn’t support his segregationist Liberty University. Look at what his kid did in using Liberty University money for real estate scams. Christians were then used to convert Dixiecrats into Republican as part of Nixons southern strategy based on four issues: anti abortion, anti gay rights, no taxes, and small government. The right wing echo chamber pushed this propaganda for decades after. And it worked. The more moderate and liberal churches got shouted down in true Calvinist tradition until the only voices heard were those of the right.
Frank Shaeffer called Falwell the angriest man he ever met, and rejected most leaders of the fundamentalist right especially Robertson, as con men. He would know, he knew them all as the son of Francis Shaeffer. He rejected that whole movement as he grew up and found out who the players were. He does pod casts on this.
As late as 1968, abortion was not a big deal in the evangelical church as 50 evangelical groups got together and said there are times when abortion is appropriate. Read letters written by Billy Graham in his paper Christianity today and the head of the SBC before it got highjacked by the fundamentalist right.
Now, thanks to Falwell and his group, and the Republican MAGA groups, the real Christian msg of Gods love has been lost in the American church and the perception of the church is sinking down. No matter who wins, especially if Trump wins and agenda 2025 succeeds, the outcome will be similar to Europe a hundred years ago, our allies will abandon us if we abandon them and get out of NATO, and Christianity will be as dead as it is in Europe after WW 2.

Criticizing someone for adopting a child and you supporting that POS has no fucking say about humanity.

Every time I see a video of a pastor talking politics to their congregation, much less telling them to vote for Trump, it makes me wish that church would start paying taxes. It’s only fair if the want to play the politics game.

Man! What a powerful examination of both MAGA force/hate and Jesus’ approach with love. They, the Israelites, chose hate, rather than love, to accomplish what they thought was important. Both what Trump (MAGA) wants and how they want to achieve it, goes against what we think of as Christianity.

    YES!
I’m soooo glad you pointed out First Baptist of Dallas’s Ministry and Jeffress, as I too was astonished when he jumped onto the #45 train and praised him as a leader!
He debunked the duty of his congregants - the duty of being a witness for Christ and his teachings!
The church should have thrown Jeffress out of his job immediately, and replaced him with pastors like you!
Instead, they embraced him. I’m sure more maga folks joined his church, because of this, and increased their revenue. (1St baptist - Dallas is one of the wealthiest churches in our state, due to their real estate holdings in Downtown Dallas…)
Unfortunately, this type of “witnessing” often turns away people who might contemplate Christianity for their religion…
What a train-wreck that Jefffress has brought to his church’s integrity. 😢
