      Joey, perhaps the smaller one are the almost same, but different species the, Caribe Piranha?
      Caribe Red Bellied Piranhas are more aggressive than normal red bellied!

  • @mikaylasmom0322
    @mikaylasmom0322 Рік тому +29

    The smaller ones are all about survival mode, so they need to be more aggressive and bold. The older ones kind of have a sense of "ok, we are safe and fed so" Genetics can play a part of course.
    I wanted to add in, the size of your aquarium plays a HUGE part as to why these tetras are ignored. A lot of people want to have "tank mates" with their piranha in their standard size aquarium and that's a recipe for disaster. Public aquariums, for example have leporinus, cichlids, other piranha species and "works" because of tank size.

    What about an army of pea puffers, small enough where the piranha won't eat, and they love to eat snails.

      When I had pea puffers they didn't eat the sand snails only my ramshorn snails.

      Possible probably but more expensive than most tetras as well.

    My 20 gallon tank is infested with assassin snails! I had a snail problem so I added 5 and now I have like 50 or more. I exchanged one snail problem for another. I don't think that'll fix the problem. They are cooler looking though. Love the tank, the red on the piranha looks great a camera. Also I think that small green plant shooting runners is dwarf sage not a crypt. Thanks Joey!

    Joey, how about a mobile sand lift, like the sand waterfall, where the sand falls through the sifter and catch the snails. Just vacuum the sand once a day instead of digging in it.

    Snails. I stupidly and intentionally added a few little snails in to my tank. Thought it would be a nice edition. Dididnt think it would get to bad. Well it did and they just exploded and got in to everything, even the filters. And I did so much water changes and cleaning and spot killing-nothing seemed to work. I got one little clown loach. One. That little dynamo single handedly ate thru a 30 gall worth of snail infestation in just a few days! Bless that little hard worker, it was amazing to see the little buggers disappear nearly overnight. Moved him in to my 20 to clean that up too after he was done with the 30. I'll never forget that tiny terror of snails. If I ever start up a tank again, im getting another for sure.

    Not to say you're wrong but in my 125 I have only 3 red belly piranha, 5 inchers and they ate all of the tiger barbs that I introduced into the tank, the same time as them. Anything I try to put in there as a tankmate dies (instant food!). So no more, not looking to sacrifice any more poor fish. And yes I feed them plenty but it still doesn't matter.

  • @PaulKeil

    I saw the bleeding heart tetra in a number of videos. I didn't realise you hadn't told people.
    They and purple emperors were my favourite tetras but there's many others that are beautiful.
    I think red belly piranha are typically carrion feeders, unless they're really hungry. So, so long as their fed they shouldn't go after the quick little ones, as they're too much effort.
    Puffers are Amazonian so might get rid of the snails but then, they're slow and some might get picked off by hungry piranha.

    I think your cloudiness is caused by heterotrophic bacteria. More water movement and surface skimming plus UV should clear things up.

  • @zebedeemadness2672

    I'd say the smaller ones aggression is down to feed drive and the need to grow fast, suppose we'll know when they are all of Equal maturity, if they still hold the same level of aggression.

    • @EmEm78
      @EmEm78 Рік тому

      Yeah, a lot of carnivorous fish, even axolotls, are way more aggressive until they reach full maturity. I always put it down to their higher need for food while they're growing.

    Yes, Assassin snails are a good choice; mind you that assassin snails can be a pest too. They just don't breed as quickly and they are much better looking, specially with that black and yrllow combination. In my experience, If there are no more snails to eat, they will also eat leftovers like the common pest snails.

    I used to have 150 gallon planted fish tank with 10 piranhas and it they grew to close to a foot in size I had jacked Dempsey's convex breeding in the tank schools of 300 fish Dempsey's in convicts with the piranhas... I believe why you're smaller piranhas are more aggressive is because they are younger and more active the older ones tend to get more mellower as they grow older.. I really enjoyed watching your video and tempted to do another piranha... tank but.. I have 180 gallon community fish tank now with ram cichlids also have balloon rims electric blues and assorted of other fish that I would like to try to breed with angelfish..

    i add Helena snails to resolve my problem, add 3 to my 30G tank,after couple mounts they kill all other snails but they produce a lot, now over 40 of them i have 😅😅😅

    Which just gave me idea if you did make it an living micro ecosystem you could pair that with aquaponics aka letting plants filter the water for your fish and the fish to feed the plant so the plants would benefit from any biowaste from the fish if you did go that route

    So I have decided to attempt a 60-gallon sealed barrel version of your 5-gallon canister model. It is for a 120-gallon tank with your "office build internal sump" for a serrasalmus elongatus; they love a strong current, with a Freesea wave maker, FS-230 at other end. Sump is overkill, but it will help with surface debris, and I built it there before I decided not to use the FX6.

  • @DevManiac

    Love my assassin snails. They will breed in that tank too so you’ll end up with just the right number to keep the nuisance snails in check. Balanced ecosystem. No more snail hunting which used to be my least favorite maintenance task. Think a polishing pad in the filter would fix the clarity really fast too.

    Years ago when i bought new plants and they were fulk of snails,i tried putting them in a cup of water with a spoon of aquarium salt.All the snails were dead on the bottom but that killed the plants as well.Perhaps cause too much salt is not good or because i waited for 30 mins.Maybe less time would do the trick and then with some water changes it would be ok?...

    Snails are the reason I don't have beautiful plants. To get rid of the snails,I emptied my tank, I threw everything out of it. I could do it, as it was only a 10g. Threw out the plants, emptied the tank. Started over with a different tank. Snails heavy bio load was un manageable to me. I advertised free snails. 3 times I took a load of them to the pet shop, a 3hr round trip. I just couldn't keep doing it. Tossed everything.

    Please keep the piranha videos coming! You have the best one out there outside of maybe a zoo. Plus you have plenty of good advice and ideas that inspire me to make the best of what I currently have for my 4 juvenile piranhas. I only have a 75 gallon tank and even having 4 is pushing the limits. It’s too bad because I would love to have a 700 gallon tank with 30+ red bellied piranhas.
    Their behavior is intriguing and the more you have the more they behave like they would in the wild . I think you should go with your gut and allow those plants to branch out and grow. In 6 months, like you said you will have a nice carpet of green going back to even taller plants.
    I use an undergravel filter plus two Seachem Tidal 110’s on my 75 gallon. I know undergravel filters are old school and probably a joke to most but back when I got a 55 gallon tank back in 1985 for my one piranha it proved to work perfectly maintaining good water quality. I did though also have a hang on back filter too. Not sure though what brand. I think maybe it was an AquaClear. Thanks again for the entertaining and informative videos!

    Piranha would be cool if they stayed around five to six inches, every time I had them they got huge and just hid behind the decor in the tank. Most people have a big tank of maybe 75-100 gallons and only maybe four or five usually survive in that size tank, that’s why I think it would be cool if they stayed around six inches in size. How many do you plan on keeping in that tank when they get fully grown?

    I prob imagine genetics are involved with Aggressive behaviour 🤷‍♂️, I mean that how it often works with other animals, dogs are a great example, but any animal will typically have some variations in behaviours then the behaviours that are best suited to that environment will end up outbreeding the others and it will evolve to become more that way over a few generations, sometimes it can fluctuate also depending on time and environmental changes
