The Phantom Fury devs were nice enough to give me access to the new PAX EAST 2024 build of Phantom Fury! Phantom Fury does take place after Ion Fury and in the same world, but it's more of a spin-off than a sequel, with gameplay that draws inspiration from Half-Life/Black Messa more than Duke Nukem/Doom. Note: the sexy music during the pole-dancing section isn't actually in the game (it was just a little gag added by me)
The hit feedback/sound design is definitely ten times better than the initial builds we got a while back. Only main issue I have would be the lack of blood that splatters onto walls. Seems like most of it just plops down on the floor. And, yes, I did notice it happen a few times here and there... but it doesn't seem as consistent as I think it should be with the amount of blood puffs coming out of enemies that are shot. One of my favorite things about older games like Half-Life would be how blood directly goes splat on a wall more than a lot of games lately. I'm excited for this! It's also kinda sad tho that environmental interactivity seems to keep dumbing down with AAA games as of late due to their obsession with graphics and cutscenes instead of gameplay. So, it's nice to see that the indie scene is still actively trying to prove that gameplay-focused games are still how things should be.
still weak and mediocre, enemies often don't react properly, AI looks dumb just bum rushing, another 'product' by these devs/publisher that will be a disappointment, remember what they did with kingpin, wrath, garven, same story with these lot, cut content, rush it out the door collect the $$$$

I understand the complaints, but compare 2.5D Duke Nukem environment and a 2D character sprite "reflecting" off a mirror in 1996, to a fully 3D one, its a completely different challenge on a technical level
How about Deus Ex / Unreal Engine 1? It had mirrors. So did DOOM3 which is still probably more advanced than Phantom Fury. Unreal Engine 3 had mirrors (Duke Nukem Forever). Source Engine has portals which are essentially mirrors. You see, we used to have mirrors in games. And then around 2010s developers uniformly decided that mirrors are suddenly impossible without raytracing. Despite the fact that we have computers many times more powerful than before and PF has low-poly / low-res assets... Hey, games use portals for various visual tricks. Can't we just have a portal that flips the image horizontally? Apparently not. We can have gigantic vistas with crazy amounts of polygons and visual effects... but rendering a few toilet stalls twice in a low-poly game? We simply don't have technology to do it!
@@TouchdownTFTD fair, I mean I ain't arguing, I honestly agree. I don't really keep a list of games that have working mirrors. And I just don't think mirrors are all that important to the overall experience. It is curious tho
Yeah, obviously that doesn't break the game or anything. And I'm not a technical expert but I just don't understand what makes mirrors so problematic these days. That's not the only example of something like this. Another one for me would be antialiasing. We used to have great AA, I mean play DOOM3 or Half-Life 2 - you set the AA high and the image quality is flawless. Then fastforward a few years and suddenly AA sucks - it either makes the image blurry, creates visual artifacts or hardly does anything to fix the jagged edges. It seems like we keep moving backwards in many areas and its perplexing to me.
As much as I’d like to believe that to be true, his video just came out, and this new build of the game has been in the works since the last build came out. If they actually watched his video and took any action on it, there would be very little time between seeing the video and the release of the new build to put any kind of changes into it, that likely weren’t already in the works.
@@TheNucaKola Very true, however, we should just be happy they were well aware of the issues and actually worked on fixing them. Iirc, Civvie did say he hasn't actually played the most recent version so maybe his next video might be like oh yes they fixed a lot of stuff too cool sweet.
I talked with one of the guys showing it off at pax, apparently the original "demo" was more of a prototype build, they're definitely listening to player feedback and it shows, the shooting and movement feels better and theres far less bugs
The initial stage in this demo is clearly a homage to the 1999 trailer of Duke Nukem Forever which I remember watching at as a 12-yr old and thought the Duke Nukem Forever was going to be the greatest game ever.
