I'm in the autistic sphere too and the thing that really made me feel and relate to Mob was during his fight with Ekubo where he was being forced to smile like everyone else and then has this "flashback" of his crush telling him "Get a clue"
Like if that's not a whole metaphor of not understanding social cues due to how your brain works, then I don't know what it is.

I do think it's important though to mention, Autism isn't just some superpower you need to master. There will always be ugly parts, like sensory overload and meltdowns. This is something I believe they manage to portray in the show, but I don't think was mentioned in your video.
Overall though, I think you did a great job exploring the concept!

i think you could say that him loosing control over the powers are a metaphor for meltdowns? He hurts people even though he doesnt want to. I relate to him a lot because during my meltdowns i get very aggressive and destroy stuff even though i dont want to. I just lose control... In the last season the end fight is him against himself, his fight to accept the part of him that hurts people. So in the last season its especially about these ugly parts with a supernatural turn to it and how mob is able to accept himself

I don't have autism but I have inattentive ADHD and I feel like I can really relate to Mob. The way he's always "in his own world" to me feels like my vivid daydreaming. His clumsiness is really relatable and his 100% power just feels like a perfect allegory for emotional dysregulation. I was always afraid of expressing myself as a child because it often happened in the form of disruptive outbursts which I was scolded for so by the time I reached Mob's age I gave off a very stoic vibe and just tried to internalize everything and avoid expressing emotions at all cost. Learning to be emotional and to express it in a controlled way is still something I'm working on and it's so nice to see Mob going through such a similar journey.

I love shigeo an mob psycho, it hits different than any other anime bc the protagonist faces his challenges and opponents thru compassion and empathy, I love that shigeo is kind, soft spoken, but gullible at times, he’s the polar opposite to most male protagonists, and he doesn’t want to be the most powerful psychic, he just wants to live a normal life and make friends and be accepted. Despite his world crushing powers, he rejects wanting to rely on his powers to get an upper hand in life. it was incredibly uplifting to see internal emotion turmoil and self acceptance be the central themes, mob psycho just resonated with me and made me feel hopeful and comforted

I believe the author, ONE, is extremely shy irl too, I watched an interview with him. He's a very nice and humble guy but I can easily see him in his kid/teenage years having this sort of issues while trying to fit in society, in fact I'm almost sure Mob is his self-insert character. Autism-ADHD is a spectrum, which means nobody really shows the signs of these issues on the same level. Someone may be just more "placed" towards ADHD than autism, or just barely showing some signs in their behavior.

There are so many times that I related to what Mob was feeling or experiencing, a lot more personally than I’ve felt with other characters. I’m on the spectrum, and while I’m generally optimistic (and gullible, sometimes both at the same time), it feels so refreshing to see such an equally compassionate and optimistic character. By that I mean, the logic behind his compassionate and optimism makes complete sense to me, since it’s very similar to what I think and experience. I am rambling on at this point, but I would not be the same person if a character like Mob didn’t exist, this series has a special place in my heart.

I just finished watching it... And oh boi it made me feel. So much in this anime (to me at least) feels like a metaphor to autism. I got diagnosed late... always struggled to make friends and as soon as i had friends i struggled keeping them. I have a similar fear like mob, losing control. My meltdowns often end in violence and i destroy stuff around me and its so hard to regain controll. People who witnessed me in that state never saw me the same again since i'm usually very polite, nice, empathetic. I never hurt someone physically luckily but i am still so scared of losing control because of my emotional outbursts. Its hard to accept this version of me, but seeing the last fight of mob against himself in S3 gave me some kind of hope? In general this anime resonated a lot with me and made me feel so much better about myself

One thing I've always loved about mp100 is how it shows that even though mob is perceived as this quiet, emotionless kid by those around him, he is actually experiencing very strong emotions, and it learning how to express them in his own way. Heya, kinda late to the party but I'd like to address my personnal experience with autism, and the fact that Mob Psycho 100 is my favorite anime. (Sorry if I make any mispells, english isn't my primary language at all x) )
So, I've discovered Mob Psycho 100 when it came out in 2016, I was 12 at the time, and it quickly became my favorite anime, because I could relate to Mob. I had very bug struggles with anything social related, my face doesn't express any emotion, I struggled to comprehend my emotions and others, but I could feel mine and thoses of others very strongly.
2 years before watching Mob Psycho 100, my teacher advised my mom to make me take IQ tests, because she suspected the reason I was getting bullied was because I was different in some sort of way. We did the first tests, they told us I had an IQ over 150, but since I was in a very bad mental state, they couldn't pin the exact numbers.
And, yeah for my whole life, even tho I knew at some point why I was different, I felt like an error, that everyone had friends, family, loves, and here I was, the kid near the tree that would just sit and wait for playground time to end.
I honestly started to feel like I wasn't needed, and I started hating on myself, but also on others. I became a jerk, because I didn't care about the consequences anymore, I just wanted to have friends and love, even if it meant manipulating others. But I lost every friends I made while being manipulative because I was obviously a very toxic person, and it's a really good thing they actually cut the ropes with me, as I changed because of it.
Now I'm 18, a few months ago I saw a therapist for the first time, and he strongly suspected autism, we saw a neuropsychologist, and yeah, turns out I am.
Another interesting thing is that a friend of mine is also autistic, and we're very close in the spectrum, the main difference being that he got diagnosed at 3, and I got diagnosed like, a few weeks ago. He didn't have to forcefully learn others feelings, he knew why he was different, he never had bullying problems because he had protection, and he never had to properly learn to talk without a monotone voice.
We almost have the same form of autism, yet we're very different just because we didn't get diagnosed at the same time.
At the end, I'm pretty happy with my life, even tho it was mostly negative things and traumas, it made who I am today, and it's nice!
And that's the first time I realise that might be why I love Mob Psycho 100 so much, because I related to Shigeo, and I still do.
To anyone who read this, have a great day!

I would consider ESP powers to be an allegory for all kinds of neurodivergency not just autism. Or at least there seems to be a strong correlation between neurodivergency and ESP in MobPsycho100.
E.g. Mob could alongside his autism also be considered to have the inattentive type of ADHD, Teru could have a narcissistic personality disorder, Ritsu could have OCD or hyperactive ADHD, and so on and so forth.

the way that the other characters think of shigeo and his struggle with that hits so close to home. shigeo doesnt like his powers. but reigen, ritsu, dimple, teru, tome, mezato; everyone thinks he is gifted and special for it and they cant understand why he doesnt feel the same. but they also subsequently think he lacks the ability to socialize and that its just something he cant do.
shigeo has to prove to everyone (and himself) that he is not less than, or more than, but that he is just as capable. and that makes so much sense to me as an autistic person

Honestly, I don't know if I'm on the spectrum or not, but mob means so much to me . i usually find it hard to relate to characters because there's always some sort of generalization (?) or something. (mitaka from chainsaw man being an exception because I swear everything she's said I've said at once too) But anyways one thing I really relate to mob with is that he was never showed as quiet loner who hates life because he's not "normal" or gets bullied or anything of that sort, but more of a quiet loner who just seems like a background character, who wishes he could just be and do more. and that's exactly how I feel.

Recently a year ago I asked myself the question of whether I was on the spectrum or not, and even though I don't know the answer yet, watching this serie was the greatest experience ever, in which I identified so much with Mob.
He is one of my top "kinnies", not only because of the way he acts clueless, but because of everything around him where I can see a reflection of an experience very similar to mine. The way he doesn't get social clues, he is naive, always in his own world or "things"... Also, most importantly, makes me inspired as some day i can push myself for doing new things, like when he enters the new club, recognice and accepts himself and his feelings, etc; because he is also a inspiration for me and so much others.
For these reasons and much more (that i could send a tremendously long text for) this show is my top comfort, and it makes me so happy, i love it! ❤

Howdy. As an autistic person with MP100 as a special interest, and who has learned a lot from the series-- I do think that Mob having his weaknesses and overcoming them, while not relying on his "gift" for gratification is VERY good-- it's a core message of the series- up there with self-acceptance/love. It is good that he is hindered.
Also, even though the author has said in interview that he did not intentionally write Mob as autistic, and the unique psychological tendencies Mob experiences are explained through the story, it remains true that my I autistic friends and I can relate to the lived experience of Mob (no matter the cause).

Imo Mob is the high functioning type, he can take care of himself on basic level, he has very tight routines like the morning routine shown so often, at first glance it may seem like everything is quite fine with him, and ofc so many other things like not understanding social interactions too well etc. But imo this is not smth he's born with but it was caused by the trauma. So he can get better and be completely fine. Also, no manga spoilers :) some people will be really surprised by how straight-forward the answers are...

wow! i never would have thought of that! i'm not well-informed on DID, but my first response to that would be that the mogami arc might be pretty evident of something like that as well, since it explores many of mob's internal emotions. i'll keep that in mind on my next rewatch! thanks for watching! :)

You’re welcome! I mostly see mob and ???% as two different personalities or “alters” inside of one body. People with DID usually develop it after a traumatic childhood experience. In Mob’s case, after the confrontation he and Ritsu had with the bullies. Also, some alters are “protective” and only show themselves when the body and mind is in danger, just like ???% appears whenever mob is unconscious and in danger. It is also really important for people who have DID to accept their different alters, something Mob has yet to learn. I don’t wanna spoil the manga but with everything that happens at the end, all of this makes even much more sense. Sorry for the long answer and the incorrect grammar, english is not my first language.

@@_miru_2212 though it's also entirely possible to read ???% as an alter, i feel shigeo at story's end is not two people in one body who switch places from time to time and just learn to live with each other (and with 'blacking out', 'losing time', etc.), but one person who's made peace with everything about himself that he refused to acknowledge, 'good' and 'bad'. he fully integrates these parts of himself -- the internal conversation he has with his powers/???% actually involves both of them accepting each other, holding hands and uniting as one being.
i know people with DID, and the healing process never seems to involve not having alters ever again, which is unrealistic -- it's heavily implied in MP100 that shigeo's discarding the shame that led him to repress himself also removed his need to split any part of himself off, too.

For me, Tome is my favorite character and one I relate to most! She may/may not be autistic but I find her generally being a social outcast, not a "smart" student and a slacker but still has passion for obscure things and is really energetic like myself. She doesn't have any talents/gifts and can be socially awkward yet still expresses and chases her passions however far they may seem to her (this moreso is shown in the spinoff).

I always saw mob as just a very simple kid with a bit of an aloof personality. Comparing him to other anime MCs I’m used to seeing, he definitely stands out due to his simple nature
Thougghhh…. I can definitely see how mob can be read as autistic, with his general lack of emotional comprehension and his rather blunt way of speaking. Adding onto his emotional dysregulation due to his worries with his powers and the way he can be easily swayed due to his rather gullible nature, it’s very easy to see why a lot of autistic people can relate to him.
Autistic or not though, he’s still a very sweet mc, and I love him a lot lmao

Considering there’s a huge reason why he seen as autistic I’d say he isn’t. It’s just my opinion so don’t attack me, but mob stuffing his emotions in a box is a product of his power being unstable and and hurting ritsu. He was “normal” before that incident. His 100% countdown is another product of hiding his emotions away, because what happens irl when you try stuffing 1 or more emotions away? It’s breaks out and overflows. He’s definitely going to seem autistic or Neurodivergent because well, he lacks basic emotions to help him, that’s why throughout the show we see him getting better and more or less “normal” like he used to be? Once he accepts himself, his power, his emotions, even his friends, he gets better. So yes I wouldn’t consider mob autistic, I heavily believe he’s just an overpowered esper who hid his feelings away until they started causing issues for him. Also ofc the power system in the show is going to be heavily reliant on emotions, every power system involves emotion, and that’s not an exaggeration, hell even ritsu gets his power from his emotion. So Im conclusion, mob is just socially weird and awkward with a need to accept a lot of things as they are, not autistic. I’ve watched this show more times than I can count and each times and it’s an all time fav for me, things become easier when you realize mob has always been “weird” or “socially awkward”.

not expression emotions and letting them build up is virtually the same as an autistic person masking for to long and having a meltdown. Obviously the show never explicitly states if he's autistic, so nothing in the show is confirmed to be an autistic trait or not, that's what symbolism and metaphors are for. At the end of the day, it could go either way. But its great that so many people can relate to him regardless.
Also he doesn't change to become "normal" and thats important to note, he learns better ways to cope with his emotions, like someone might learn to cope with autism. He's still awkward, bad at reading social cues, and doesn't express himself (as much) as everyone else.

I don't understand why anyone would be, in a sense, proud of being autistic, like I see in the comments and a lot of places online. Why should being neurodivergent be celebrated? It's just... A thing. It's not something you work for, it doesn't even help you that often. On top of that I have ADHD (well, I was diagnosed a long time ago so idk if I can still claim that card) and am on the autism spectrum on a technicality and I don't understand saying that serizawa is. Yeah he lacks confidence, is awkward, and never gets social cues just like mob, but look at serizawa's upbringing. All those things are things your learn as you grow, so if you don't have a ton of social interaction as you grow up, ie, being a complete shut-in, then it's only obvious you won't have learned any of that. it feels kinda like you're grasping at straws for some of it

    • @inutade

things like being autistic have been stigmatized and been shoved away for years, people have learned to be ashamed of being autistic, neurodivergent, whatever. is being neurodivergent celebrated? no. but are people learning to embrace themselves for being autistic/neurodivergent? yes. You don't need to work for something to feel proud of it, you can just be proud of learning to accept who you are, that in itself, is something to be proud of. for me, i can see myself in serizawa and mob somewhat. i can relate to their traits in different ways, people see different characters in themselves sometimes, and i can understand the idea of serizawa being autistic, i thought he might be on the spectrum too, if autistic people can relate and feel seen by certain characters, i dont see a problem with it.

I was diagnosed with autism at age 25 (2 years ago) and I fucking cried when I watched Mob Psycho 100 several times, because I didn't know I had autism since birth; I was only diagnosed with ADD at around 10. But when I watched Mob, I felt... understood, I felt seen and heard... I was timid, quiet, didn't have a "group", a loner and bullied. Many people have had it worse ofc, but with Mob Psycho 100 I felt recognised and like it said to me personally "It's not your fault for being different" or rather "You're just another normal human with a different perspective and personality. Doesn't make you less human".
When Mob went into Reigen's office as a young kid to talk about his problems (before he showed his powers), I felt that speech from Reigen cut deep. I'm just different; no more, no less human.
I'm not into anime like at all; mainly One-punch man and Mob Psycho, to some degree (especially last season) Attack on Titan, and that's all. But Mob Psycho was just... well, resonating with me as an autist so much that I basically said, without hesitation "He's autistic". I don't think Autism in any media have been more wholesome and careful with the portrayal of autism. Like I love "Rainman", but it set a stereotypical standard of what autism is and caused more stigmatization and harmful views on autism as if autism was a "disease"... I'm happy Mob Psycho went the way it did and One didn't do the stereotypical stuff; he's never done what the mainstream does really.

I feel like I'm between autist and normal, I'm a weird hybrid... and I get you, also if you were diagnosed Autist at 25 then it must not be the big deal, like seriously, society makes a big deal about autism but it isn't really bad, it becomes ""bad"" because of their misunderstanding. I know how to treat "autist" people, I possess the full field of view now.

    • @adamforsstrand2048
      @adamforsstrand2048 Рік тому +1

@@luis-sophus-8227 if you're "between autist and normal", you're within the autist spectrum and therefore autistic. And it can be a big deal as it can explain why and how you react and behave in situations and why you, for example, don't pick up on some social cues. And in some places in the world, having Autism diagnosed is either really good or really bad. Like here in Sweden, if I have Autism diagnosed, I get certain extra rights to help me through with the things I struggle heavily with in life; I can get an assistance who helps me with talking to authorities and interviews, to help me organise my life, depending on the severity of autism and how much it causes you to struggle through daily life.
In most places in the world, you don't get any help or benefits with it and have to continue with your daily struggles and stress, causing some autistic people to develop other things to deal with the daily life.
The keyword to Autism is "some". Some need benefits and help, some don't. Some have very obvious autistic traits, some have subtle but they're within the spectrum. Some are heavily affected by their autism, some aren't. Some autists can't really express feelings, some are too expressive. Some are confused, some are completely understanding everything in society. Some are nervous wrecks, some are stalwart. Some are obsessive in certain fields, some are good or bad in most fields. Some can work overtime, some can't even work. Like "normal" people.
It's really just in what part of the spectrum you are on and where born in. And me being double diagnosed (ADD and Autism), adds extra flavour and confusion and exhaustion. I'm lucky I'm born in Sweden, because here I can get immense help while also encouraging me to be my complete self.
