  • With water temps in the 80s and an abundance of baitfish everywhere, the summer bass pattern seems to be in full effect! Matt and I head to the Occoquan Reservoir in search of some feed bass. The morning topwater bite was fast and furious, but once the sun came up we slowed down our presentation with some finesse jigs targeting shallow structure/cover.

Mike, next time a snakehead misses your bait, try a weightless D Bomb just let it sink. Trust me, it works.
    As for superstitions,
    1. No Bananas, Nothing with the Word "Banana" on it, Nothing with Banana flavoring, at least 3 days before fishing. If I accidentally touch a banana, I hold a flame up to the skin that touched it for at least 30 seconds.
    2. Always pray to a higher power before making your last cast at a spot.
    3. I try to always have a Dog with me when shark fishing from shore, I just feel like I catch less baby (under 20 lbs) cartilaginous fish when I have a dog with me.
    4. I always carry an Xrap 08 in hot steel with me, no matter what I am fishing for and no matter where I'm fishing.
    5. If the bait company makes the California 420 color, or some variant that would be called cal 420 by somebody familiar with the color, I fish that. I never fish watermelon red flake, even though the colors are so similar.
    6. The last 2 times I have caught a Skipjack Tuna, I have gone over a year before catching my next pelagic gamefish. If I ever hook another, I'm cutting the line, no matter what.
    7. If an aquatic creature that I didn't catch washes up or jumps out of the water to where I can get it, I never use it as bait and always let it go if it is still alive.
    8. When I find a venomous snake, I wait for it to move out of the way, and then continue, I never walk away from it. This is because the last time I did, it ended up biting 2 of the 3 dogs that we had with us at the time. (they both survived though)

If the shad spawn just ended it can make for a crazy tough bite. The big fish will transition out deep right after with full stomachs. It's hard to get them to eat during that time.

When were trolling in the big lake (Lake Superior) after we catch a fish and net it, we always dip the net 3 times in the water on the left side of the boat. It's nothing that we believe in religiously but just do it for fun!;)

a family superstition is that you always keep the first fish of the day no matter how small or else you won' catch any others. i just had this happen yesterday. i caught my first fish 10 mins into fishing and i let him go, and i didn't catch anything else for the next 4 hours.
