- This video demonstrates how to us a magnetic compass to determine the direction of the local magnetic field: the north end of the compass needle points in the direction of the field. Also demonstrated is the field of a bar magnet, visualized using one or more compass needles.
This demonstration was created at Utah State University by Professor Boyd F. Edwards, assisted by James Coburn (demonstration specialist), David Evans (videography), and Rebecca Whitney (closed captions), with support from Jan Sojka, Physics Department Head, and Robert Wagner, Executive Vice Provost and Dean of Academic and Instructional Services.
It is a very nice demonstration, thank you Dr. Edward
True...
Nice explanation
This is the biggest scam in science
I love when people actually demonstrate it to me. Thank you to the person wearing the green suit, you are a legend.
This is well demonstrated. Very clearly shown. Thank you Prof Boyd F. Edwards and the team.
Fantastic demonstration
Thank you for helping me solve a very tough question!
I'm grateful Dr.Edwards!
thank you for being a good teacher, i can finally understand this now for my test
Thanks so much. I wish I could see this demonstration in high school and college years.
Planetary "north magnetic pole" is actually the southern pole field of the planet. Hence the red needle portion of a compass is polarized north.
A great demonstration
It's much more clear when you see the demonstration
I love you. You have made my life easier
Brilliant demo :)
so clear and short. thankyou!
Ily man was really struggling to understand this experiment thank you
Thank you so much for this video
thank you, sir, it helped me a lot
Thank you so much sir, it helped a lot
Sending love from India
fab demo ..thanks sir
Thank you very much, Sir! it helped me understand it much better now!
Thanks for making this video
Thank you so much 💖💖💖
Very informative. Thank you
Great demo!
Great demonstration, Thank you
great explanation
super i understood
Well demonstrated.
Thank you
Awesome demo
thank you
Good demonstration.
Excellent sir
Sir,you are legend
Makees sense now.
Does it exert force when bar magnet is at rest?
Excellent 👍
Thank you so much sir
It was helpful
potato waffles sorry i was sent here for home learning lol
Wonderful
Fabulas!!!!!!!! Tqsm sir🧡
Sir thod diye aap tho last me 😂😂😂😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
What makes you think the field flows out of the north pole and around and into the south pole? The field flows north to south inside the magnet, and then continues out of the south pole and around and into the north pole. Why do you think otherwise? There is nothing in your demonstration that indicates direction of flow.
Magnetic field lines moved from n to s outside the magnet and s to n Inside the magnet and about these field lines you can do the experiment by yourself just keep a bar magnet on a paper and some iron piece around it tap the paper gently you will see the shapes of that iron piece which will indicate the magnetic field lines and thats how you prove it sir
I'm using this to gett to the gate
Thank you so much sir!
Superb 😍😍
Nice sir
amazing
Okay so my compass flips 180• in a certain area top and bottom of my home. Right at the place I have been naturally drawn to stand at for three yrs.
The radical 180• flip starts outside… in a diagonal line from kitchen door diagonal 20•NNW…
In the zone it then flips 180• eastwards then back in to the 20•nnw?
This pattern continues south to north in a diagonal cross of my house…
Can u help me understand… cause I’m thinking maybe I do have a whopping ley line under the hse. Does that sound reasonable.
And yes I have check the compass and tried it on the phone with the same results….!! Is this a signature of a compass picking up a ley line…
Would you be able to enlighten me on this. Cause I’m quite confused about it? As this demo shows what happens to my compass. I’m very curious to know more about the why
Have you solved your case? I'm curious.
Very nice ...sir thanx
I understand now Dr
Thank you dr edward
HAHAAHAH TIME TO MESS UP WITH MY COMPASS
THANKS !!!
It's nice
Thanku
So why they deflact because bar magnet in left side has north and the compass having south pole then they attract
Pls tell me how they deflact
North attracts south and vice versa but like poles repel...
Sir how can DM you?
Which means that there is no central South Pole (negative) on earth because the south end (positive) would be attracted to it the closer to the "south" you were.
The south pole of earth is it's perimeter, the North pole is the centre.
You should try actually watching the video.
@@donutactual8887 I have, what is your point please?
Thanks
Good one
The Earth has a whatever magnetic pole on a side which we, humans, decided to draw on top of our maps; and it has a whatever another magnetic pole on the other side which we agreed to draw on the bottom of our maps. So now the planet has the 'upper' and the 'lower' magnetic poles.
Then we invented a compass with a straight needle. It has its own whatever magnetic side 1 and a whatever magnetic side 2. The sticking-to-the-upper-pole end and the sticking-to-the-lower-pole end. The first is marked red, the other one is unmarked or marked blue.
We, earthlings, agreed that the planet's pole that attracts red end of compass needle is North. The planet's pole that attracts the unmarked/blue end of compass needle is South.
I always thought that the Earth is a giant permanent magnet and a compass' needle is a small permanent magnet. In order to point North with its red end the needle has to have South pole there-cause two different poles attract. Thus, if the planet's 'upper' pole is North, the needle's "northern" red end must have south polarity. If the planet's 'lower' pole is South, the needle's "southern" blue end must have northern polarity.
If we place a permanent magnet (I assume it must act as a smaller equivalent of the planet) near a compass and the compass attracts its "southern" blue end of the needle to the red northern end of the magnet-it means that either all the magnets we have are marked wrong (blue and red must swap places), or we actually have southern magnetic pole on the planet's North.
Comment to my own comment after some research: Yes, our planet's North is a magnetic South and its South is a magnetic North. Oh cringe.
Thus we name the Earth's magnetic polarities not by their features, but rather by the name of respective end of a compass needle.
Good morning sir,
Sir, what will happen if I put my compass near South pole and then try to find direction of Magnetic field lines ???🙄🙄
The magnetic needle will point in the same direction as it was pointing when the needle was at north pole
@@radhikachandwani6522 when you say same direction what does it mean ???
Previously the needle was pointing opposite to North pole.
Tqsm❤
Thanks sir
I think the magnet I was playing with broke my compass somehow
North Red, South Green bar magnet. Wow, you failed to remember some "color blind" people see no difference. Unless told one is red, the other green, and shown which is north (red), a shade (lighter or darker) can then be discovered of that color to the other.
Nice
Thanku sir
Good sir
Than Q sir...
Five stars.
Tq sir
Fab
👍
The earth's magnetic field poles are reversed. South in north, north in south.
That's true, but that fact does not invalidate anything in the video.
@@physicsdemos I loved this, I completely understood after seeing this. Thank you. Lots of love from SHREYA from India.
I NEED TO WATCH THIS BECAUSE MY MOM TOLD ME TO AND IT WAS HOMEWORK 😭😭
So What??
Can a bar magnet show deflection if it's free to move and placed near magnetic compass? Pl do an experiment for this also🙏
Instead of bar magnet, you should use magnetic needle for better result. And I am quite sure.....the magnetic needle will shoe deflection towards magnetic compass. 👍
@@jacksonbodra6450 I guess.. Magnetic needle is in the magnetic compass only
I'm asking if a bar magnet can show deflection due to magnetic field of the compass.
@@shivangisingh6511 there are different shapes of magnet. One of the shape is Needle shaped.
To enlighten your point, I guess bar magnet is a bit heavy as compared to the magnetic compass. So, needle of the magnetic compass will show deflection towards bar magnet. 👍
@@shivangisingh6511 bar magnet is hard to move if you are using magnetic compass.
Osm....thanku

Super
It nice
😂. Because opposite poles attract, this definition means that Earth's north magnetic pole is actually a magnetic south pole and Earth's south magnetic pole is a magnetic north pole.
Explain in kannada
Earth is flat. Magnetism proves it. We live in the dielectric plane of inertia and it’s a much much bigger level place than we thought. Plasma moon map by “cosmic vibes”
