Learn how to play Mississippi Queen, as performed by Mountain with Leslie West on guitar. One of the most epic guitar tones of all time and it wasn't even a guitar amp that he's using. He used a Sunn Colliseum PA amp that he plugged his guitar into and got that incredible tone.

Most of my guitar playing boomer mates remember Woodstock 69 due to Hendrix, but for me three other giants stood out too: Leslie West, Alvin Lee and Johnny Winter. Maybe it's because I prefer their more raw, heavy, driven blues rock sound - and I've been a lifelong fan of these awesome bluesmen, who sadly all have passed now. At least we still have their epic music to cherish and love.

Great video and lesson. Saw Mountain live, West broke his high E string during one song and at the end of the song some shouted "you broke a string". West answered "don't need it". He didn't and played the rest of the set without it and still sounded phenomenal.
I Saw Mountain and James Gang the same night at a medium sized Veterans Hall in Southern Oregon.
I saw Leslie again in the mid 70s as a solo artist, and in 1980 with West Bruce and Lang, you know Jack Bruce from Cream talk about awsome gigs. Ive been a fan of Leslie from the beginning, I have a Gibson Les Paul Jr sunburst
to this day because of Leslie.
I hear a lot of Rock Candy in some of those licks never played either so it’s fun learning it😂

It does take two separate SG's to play Mississippi Queen! Some people don't understand thar color matters! The black paints adds just the right grittiness for playing the lead parts while the red paint adds to a more basic rhythmic full tone for the rhythm parts. ;)

Your tone is great. First pro amp I had was a Sunn with 4 10's and it was a transistor, it was huge.
Sunn had good Solid State amps, i had the 450 watt Sunn Colesium with the big 2x18" Cerwiv Vegas in Reverse Horn cabs like having two acoustic 360s.

@@12footchain My band and I were in a recording studio in Long Island. We were if I recall around 15 at the time and a friend of ours knew someone at the studio. We just jamming around when I walks this burly guy with his big Afro hair and it was tbe great Leslie West. He picked up a guitar and started showing me some cool stuff. Tbat was my introduction to mixing minor and major pentatonic. Great guy wish he was still around RIP Leslie. Btw i went to the same high school as Vinnie Appice and lived like 5 blocks from him

The other song is called I Don't Want You by the Traffic Jam (a forerunner to Status Quo). 12 FOOT, So it seems that Leslie West keeps switching back and forth from Major pentatonic and minor pentatonic BOX#4 over the D shape CAGED? but mostly ending and landing on the major pentatonic

Absolutely! Fuzz was the tone of the day. I would see them at the Capitol Theater in NJ, early seventies. We would try to get seats up front and give Corky the finger and he would throw sticks at us. Corky is touring with a "Mountain " show. I saw them twice in Boca Raton. Small venue, maybe a hundred people. (the Funky Biscuit) He has Richie Scarlet playing guitar and Mark Clarke on bass. They do all of the favs and a couple of West Bruce and Laing.
