Our last 3 puppies, were all chosen for us by the breeder based on our application and interview process! It has been amazing to have that kind of help, because you are so right! So many people have no idea how to "pick" a puppy to fit with them! This is such outstanding advice!
We are definitely out-dogged in our house as first time dog owners! Working on finding things that will match out puppo's temperament as a working breed!
I have a 7 month old Dane Pit Bull mix.. found out she loves search and rescue.. I'm excited about that. She is a huge dog at almost 90 pounds. I'm glad I chose her
I wish all dog parents-to-be watch this video before getting their dogs. When we got our Labradoodle, we specifically looked for a calm temperament. We had to choose between Riley and his sister. His sister was sweet, loving, giving kisses and energetic which steals your heart, I was so tempted to take her home. Riley on the other hand was friendly but aloof, he greeted us, then good for playing on his own. We picked him because of his "old soul" and he turns out to be the perfect dog for us.
Great points! When we chose our wheaten terrier, Gertie, from among her six littermates, we Volhard temperament tested the whole litter. I'm so glad we did! Gertie scored all 3s (perfect for us), and she spent the whole visit trying to get out of the ex-pen to be near us. She is 6 months now and the loveliest puppy we could ask for. I highly recommend the Volhard test for those who aren't sure how to gauge temperament!
It's amazing how important this is. I was lucky to meet Ken once and this was one of the first questions he asked me regarding my dog. Polite enough to ask the why's and reasons behind my choice. Was great
There is an element of randomness to it as well. The breeder appointed to me the most energetic pup from a litter of 8 of an energetic breed (collie). I just checked whether he was up for a walk but he was so deep asleep on his back that I did not want to wake him. Went by myself, when I got back he looked at me and went back to sleep.
I think a video about finding and picking breeders would be great! There’s entirely too much info out there for anybody casually looking for a puppy to discern a good breeder from one only looking for the money. Especially with some of these fancy sites people use.
I have to say that as a breeder we choose which of our puppies goes to which home. We specifically temperament test and evaluate our puppies so that as far as possible we match the right puppy to the right home. You have given excellent pointers though, for people who will pick their own puppy, also very important to pick the right breed!
@@vvriwvnelnblet I'm sure your breeder will do their best. They will want the puppy they have invested so much love and time in to go to the best possible home, where it will live forever rather than to home where it may end up in a shelter or chained in the backyard because it doesn't suite. Wishing you the best of luck.
9 months ago, I brought home a shepherd/retriever puppy. He is such a sweetheart. He is bigger than my older dog at 9 months! She is a Dutch Shepherd, will be 9 yrs in Dec. I am thankful, I found your training videos. Because of them, I have been asked many times if I am a train? I always send them to your UA-cam channel!
We got a Brittany spaniel because I wanted a high energy, intellegent dog. I got a dog who is super smart and trainable but an absolute couch potato, we love him to bits and he is perfect for our family.
Have been binging your channel and saw this new upload. Just wanted to say that I really love all your videos- You are showing me how to be a better leader for my pup and guiding me through this experience. It's been challenging trying to establish boundaries when all my experiences with dogs have been after this puppy phase, however, I now see the importance of it and how it serves to enrich their lives, trust, and experiences!
Great video! It's an important topic which I feel often doesn't get enough consideration from potential new owners. I feel like oftentimes people just want one breed of dog because they like how they look, and while I can understand that to a degree, they need to also be willing to put in the work the breed requires. It's how I ended up with my current little collie pup. A family bought him, didn't realise how high energy he was going to be, and 5 weeks later they were looking to give him up. This is always the first thing I bring up whenever a friend/family member tells me they want to get a pup, because I hate seeing this same thing happen over and over, simply because of a lack of awareness and or research.
Years ago, dad and I rescued a Keeshond. She was with us for years, but eventually it got to the point where she couldn't even stand or walk. We knew she was going to go soon, so I started looking for a puppy to fill the void. The more I researched Keeshond I keep reading that they were noted for barking -- a lot -- The funny thing is we had Molly for about 13 years, and if she barked 3 times that would have been a lot.
@@katjongeward7155 We got Molly when a lady from church said her son had to get rid of one of his dogs. We were told it was a Border Collie. When we got there this grey and black ball of fur came running out to meet us. She seemed really nice. The vet we were going to use was about a mile away. We said if she checked out ok we would take her. In the short drive to the vet we fell in love. The vet said she was completely overrun with fleas and ticks, she had an ear infection, she had a cracked tooth that needed to come out, and she had heart worms. We already loved her. With the vet bills this free pup turned out to be the most expensive dog we ever owned, but keeping her was the best decision we ever made.
I went to the shelter to find a small apartment dog who would be low energy, and love to snuggle. When we arrived, the only chihuahua mix's cage was empty.. just a cute picture. We had already loved him online. So when the volunteer said "a potential adopter has him on a walk." My heart sank😢. I thought "Oh, We're too late. They're definitely going to take him. " then behind me I heard "ya, he's really cute, but he's not interested in walking at all.. he really just wants to nap." And I thought "ohmygosh HE'S PERFECT!!" So when they said they were passing, I jumped on it!! (The chance, not the dog 😅). That was 9 years ago and I love him more everyday ❤❤
thank you for all the vids you all make... Currently prepping for a Field-Golden Retriever (or Jacht-Golden Retriever in Dutch). Big Hi and Hello from Zepperen in Limburg Belgium
Excellent points. I got my puppy on a whim from a rescue. I didn’t put much if any research into my pup. I lucked out but there are still some issues I didn’t anticipate and I would do differently. The other day a friend was visiting and my very friendly dog was super excited and trying to pull to see him. He kept saying I can hold him for you. I replied no I have him. (He’s over 50lbs and super strong) My thoughts if you can’t control your dog you shouldn’t own it. All I can say is that goodness for McCanns. We have completed grade 1 and are looking forward to starting grade 2 later this month. Thanks for all your helpful information!!
This is really true. With our first dog our breeder was like: none of this matters just pick one you’ll be fine. And I got emotionally invested in his picture. And it wasn’t fine. He was a very bad fit for our household. His energy overwhelmed us and he was incredibly stubborn which felt more like dread than a challenge at the time. We just got a dog in December and this time we found one who fits us better. He is chill and easy to train and sometimes stubborn but not overly so. He wants to please and he mostly matches the energy of the room so when we are energetic so is he. When we are chill and reading books or watching tv he’s happy to sit next to us and be pet. It’s just s much better experience this time around.
Great post! I think breeders sometimes know when there's a pup who has a challenging temperament. That pup might not be a good fit for any of the potential owners, but the breeder still has to give it to someone. It's important to do your own assessment so you can advocate for which pup you get, and walk away if needed.
@@hunteyvonne in our case with that first dog, the breeder didn’t let anyone meet the dogs before purchasing. She had a totally system down. It was probably a puppy mill. But I didn’t know anything about anything then. We had to put money down and then meet the dog. The dog we got now we “adopted” from a family who purchased from a breeder and then three weeks later decided they didn’t want him 😭 but we met him and spent time with him and knew he was meant for us and us for him. I just love him so much. He is the nicest dog and so smart and funny and easy to train and chill. He loves pleasing us, treat in our hands or not already and he is not even five months yet. You know when you get the right dog for sure.
I vote for you to keep them both😀. We previously had a shih tzu and a Lhasa Apso that crossed over the rainbow bridge in 2020 and 2021. A few months ago we welcomed a Shichon puppy. Love him to death. He is very different from my other 2 pups but he is just what we need in our life. Learning more training skills with this little guy and super smart. Forgot what a handful puppies can be.
Love that y'all are taking time to talk about these important topics! Can't tell you how many people pick their dog based on a photo rather than meeting them first, but it makes a big difference! Our family is about to bring home the newest member to our pack this weekend, and I've seen lots of videos from you all on how to integrate the puppy slowly into the pack, first focusing on their bond with you, but I'd LOVE some more information on how to balance time with the other dog. Our older pup (3 years) loves training with me, but does get a bit jealous when I train other dogs. How might I go about this process of splitting my time with both dogs so they're both getting the love and support they need?
Wow this is so in depth and helpful!! Thanks so much for making this information free to view. It could be the difference between someone buying a loveable new member of the family and a "monster" (and that's in quotes cause it's so subjective) that they can't handle.

It has been almost 12 years since we’ve had a puppy in the house! I love you guys to help remind me what to do to have a great dog !

The black and white one looks like my new puppy, similar personality too. They told me she was a border collie/ dachshund mix, but she has that short coat, but border collie color pattern, she can be super chill, but when that wild switch is on it can be on for hours! lol
We were having that discussion with the adoption advisor at the pound. We know what we want. A husky is not it. However, they were pushing a large, high energy breed…when we live in an apartment. My girl was the last of two in the litter and I chose her from her picture. With me it's a confidence issue.shes already sitting, learning her name and I've had since Friday the 13th February.
We just got a mini bernedoodle puppy. She is such a sweetheart and so smart. I am looking forward to less biting though. She has started to see me as her leader so she doesn't bite me as much as she did when we got her 5 days ago but she still bites other family members pretty regularly and hard. We have the kids just drop a toy or treat so she sees them as pack leaders too and not just littermates but it is so hard.
Great video and the cutest puppies. I'd suggest to take them both. Why? They compliment each other, they'll benefit each other. Just saying 😂. Hard, very hard to chose I guess 😉.
Hi Guys, What personality traits would you look for in an assistance dog? The breed is a medium labradoodle. I have a toy poodle which I am using your puppy training with at the moment. It’s going so well and we moved up to the second dog training class in just 2 weeks. Thank you for all your advice and information 🐶🙂
I wouldnt choose labradoodles because what i know is that they are super bad combination, usually come with a lot of health problems. Labradors are incredible and Poodles as well.
@@vvriwvnelnblet Sorry to hear that you have had that experience with the breed. I only recently lost our labradoodle and she was the most optimistic dog ever. Cara was always eager to please and would assist me by picking up my phone, keys, walking stick and anything else that I dropped. I just love their personalities and temperaments. As a service dog I also enjoy the no/low shed coat. Thank you for your reply 🐩
Are the homemade tuna treats okay to start right away if your puppy has only been on kibble, or should I start off very slow with them as to not upset his stomach?
And I know I’m probably giving her bad habits with her sleeping but today is day 3 and I did a little crate training earlier but when I closed it she started crying but I know it takes time but if you have any tips that will help us with crate training I wanna make sure she’s able to play and go potty before bed and not cry unless she has to potty in the middle of the night unfortunately we don’t have a front of back yard where we live so for now we have to use puppy pads but I just wanna know the rights and wrongs of having a puppy she goes number 2 on the pads thankfully but we’re having problems with number 1 so if you can please help me out I would really appreciate some advice
Hi me and my wife just got a miniature dachshund puppy a few days ago her name is Winnie I’ve been having a hard time training her these past couple of days we unfortunately didn’t have a crate the first night so I slept with her on the couch and last night when we had our crate she was crying so much so she slept in our bed
Please please please don't use "hypoallergenic dogs" syntax because it's just a marketing fad - allergen proteins that people can be allergic to are actually in dogs' saliva, and the only connection that allergy-causing potential has to the fur is that the dogs spread saliva on the fur by licking, where it then gets dry and ready to spread. I love you guys and watch you regularly, but please help with stopping the misinformation from spreading and greedy type of breeders cashing in on it. :(
the term hypoallergenic is important to those like me who are allergic to dogs with fur instead of hair. I will get allergy symptoms around someone’s dog without touching their saliva at all.I never react to dogs that are called hypoallergenic.

And are looking for a buddy that can get me of the couch to meet new people and inspire me to do Be a activities out door. To live a more healthy active life. And help me make new friends.
Get both. 🤣 we got 2 Australian shepherd puppies from the same litter. We're happy to have them, but never again. Lol. They are a joy though. And high energy, but thats ok cuz I have high energy. Training is going great to thanks to your videos.
Keep both
I had to choose between two of the cutest dachshund puppy sisters and that wasn't at all easy to do. I wanted to take them both home with me.
Great video and the cutest puppies. I'd suggest to take them both. Why? They compliment each other, they'll benefit each other. Just saying 😂. Hard, very hard to chose I guess 😉.
Hi Guys,
What personality traits would you look for in an assistance dog?
What do you think about the Catahoula leopard dog
How often do you guys get a new dog?
Are the homemade tuna treats okay to start right away if your puppy has only been on kibble, or should I start off very slow with them as to not upset his stomach?
My Great Dane fur is a lot more to deal with than my German Shepherd fluff
I am looking for a puppy for Christmas
I say get both. Ha
You guys will pick the black and white one. My prediction 😁
I adopted a deaf Chihuahua puppy.
Its not hypoallergenic dog but its much better to have a Poodle if you allergic rather than a Husky for example.
the term hypoallergenic is important to those like me who are allergic to dogs with fur instead of hair. I will get allergy symptoms around someone’s dog without touching their saliva at all.I never react to dogs that are called hypoallergenic.
