    I rarely hear anybody say anything positive on the noise the concept 2 makes. For me it's what makes it a perfect machine. Not only does it give the impression you're putting in a lot of effort, but once you're familiar with it, you can keep the same split time with your eyes closed so you can focus on every sensation in your body. Just thinking of the sound makes me want to workout!

    For pretty much every piece of fitness equipment there are a few to quite a few contenders (I love Intek weights for example, but others prefer Ivanko or Troy - they are all good) - except in rowing. Concept is the clear choice by a margin. I'm surprised they don't charge more to be honest - because they could and they'd still get bought.

    • @strawberryyogurt0
      @strawberryyogurt0 5 років тому

      @@euplot ... Just because olympic teams use it around the world, does that truly prove the concept2 is the definitive machine for rowing though? Concept2 is a *static rower* but have you ever heard about *dynamic rowing machines* such as the *Oartec Dx* (recently released, roughly twice the price of the concept2) and *RowPerfect/RP3* (been around for a while, but 3 to 4 times the price of the Concept2)? Yes, there is also the dynamic concept rower but apparently it's no where near the experience of the Oartec/RowPerfect. Sliders can also be purchased for the Concept2 to mimic the dynamic experience. There's a reason why Concept has products that tries to mimic the 'dynamic experience.'
      *Dynamic rowers* are supposedly better at mimicking on the water rowing experience. Dynamics are less stressful on the lower back, heavy focus on proper leg drive, they truly require proper technique to keep the seat in stable position. If your technique is off, you wouldn't be able to do much on a dynamic machine. It other words, *dynamic machines reinforces proper technique.* But because they're more expensive, they're less affordable for large groups. Concept2 has been around for quite a while, they're out there. They're used. They're endorsed. They've got brand recognition. But does that truly mean they're the best?
      I'm still debating between getting a Concept2 or the Oartec Dx, but because the Concept2 is the less expensive version, I'm more inclined to go with the Concept2, possibly. That doesn't actually make the Concept2 the better machine. The Oartec Dx would probably be the better rower. I might actually go with the Oartec when I decide to get a rower myself but the price of the Concept2 is comparatively more attractive and that could sway my decision. It's still a complete toss up.

    I had no idea that "noise" was not mandatory for a rowing machine. That is definitely cool. Had that been a concern, and had I known of the Matrix when I was researching prior to purchase, still that double weight and double price tag would have been hard to swallow. I've rowed here and there over the years in gyms, but recently watched a lot of videos/read up quite a bit in advance of actually purchasing one of my own. Came upon this video (thank you!), which featured the two rowing machines I was looking most closely at and it answered a lot of my questions. Only thing left to do was go in the store and try them both out. Having now done this, the Matrix is the best machine for me (purchased!). It was a lot more comfortable to sit on and I really like the fluid, nearly soundless movement. I did see what you mean about the finishing pull being easier than the initial pull, but there is definitely still resistance at the end. In other words, to me, it doesn't at all feel like the final pull is too weak; I actually think it feels to have a normal/standard feel at that phase of the stroke. Rather, if anything, the initial pull is more difficult than other machines, which makes the end seems easier than it actually is - hope that makes sense. Regardless, these are incremental differences when compared to other machines. Comparatively, what I most disliked about the Concept 2 was the slack in the chain that seemingly results after each stroke and causes a slight delay before you are able to begin the next stroke. To each their own and all, but I didn't really think the comparison was all that close between the two machines when compared side by side.

    The Concept 2 has a weight limit of 250lbs while the Matrix has a weight limit of 350lbs. So, for many people that are truly overweight the Concept 2 is it really designed for skinny people and not for anyone that is really overweight?
    When you discuss the Matrix weighs double what the Concept 2 does on that side of the story. The concept 2 when I see big people using it and going fast with it, you can see it moving and even lifting up. Due to the extra weight of the Matrix rower it pretty much stays down and doesn’t move. A big difference when your rowing hard on the Matrix rower and not having to look for weights to help keep it from moving around during a hard workout is a big plus for the Matrix Rower as well.
    I just got my Matrix Rower 5 days ago and I absolutely love it. What a well built machine. I had the Oxford 6 and boy was that a bad experience. Big plastic sides that no matter how you take them off pieces of plastic will break. It was not a very good unit due to some poor workmanship, but if they’d address a few concerns like the belt getting turned around and the bottom of the pole that holds the console wasn’t so sharp and close the belt it wouldn’t get damaged, which was that and a part bouncing around got me to open the damn thing up in the 1st place.

      I cannot comment on which machine is better as I basically only know the concept 2, but I do know the concept as being rock solid and reliable.

    I’ve worked in Houston for a commercial fitness repair company since 2001. First as a tech, then estimating parts since 2008. You’re best option is Concept II. The parts are readily available, even for older models. The parts are inexpensive. All the other brands y’all have mentioned, most aren’t commercially rated. The Matrix is, but the longevity of their units aren’t. The owner of my company had a C2 in his house until he put a stepmill in there. Matrix consoles are super expensive to replace, after the warranty expires. You might as well buy a new machine. I don’t know how much the units are, but the console on Matrix RXP is $2,065.99 + installation, labor, trip, shipping. Concept 2 consoles are about $500 + service charges.

  • @rowhsv

    Some observations:
    The extra foot placement width on the Matrix is not going to help you in a boat; it would be more beneficial to work out your flexibility issues.
    Seats, cushy does not always equal comfortable, while the Concept II can make your butt numb on a long row, I can row comfortably for a considerable amount of time on a properly shaped wooden seat like on my single.
    Handles, the Concept II handle is too hard, when you start averaging an hour or more per day on the machine it will be uncomfortable, I wrapped mine with tennis racket cushion grip tape, this makes it awesomely comfortable and brings the diameter to about that of a sweep oar.
    About the sound, there's nothing quite like the whoosh..., whoosh..., whoosh... sound of someone really getting on it, on a Concept II, very motivational, plus I can walk into a gym and just by listening tell if someone knows what they are doing on an erg. But, yeah, I guess it would be nice if they were quieter, then I might watch TV on long rows instead of playing games like 'How consistent can I keep my projected finish meters?"

      Hahaha we all love that "game" of how consistent can I keep my projected finish meters. I like the points you've brought up! Great tip on the racket tape, gotta try it out. For media consumption while rowing, bluetooth sport earbuds and a laptop, pad or a phone could change your rowing experience completely, did for me. I watch movies or listen to audio books from Audible, and kilometers just fly by. Works well on calorie burn 10K's but might be too distracting for intense workouts.

    Hi Austin! I've found a good quality/price compromise in the V-Fit Tornado Air Rower, which basically we can define as a "mini Concept 2" for home use. It is a very popular rowing machine in the UK and an Amazon number one choice, and all in all it's a good bang for the buck. It features an interesting progressive air resistance, which is not bad at all for long distances. It shares quite a bit of similarities with the Concept 2, including the noisiness :D The two models you are presenting are definitely of a higher level, much more suitable for Gyms or Rowing Clubs than for at home workouts...

And no, Concept2's verison of the dynamic is supposedly not even remotely the same as the Oartec or the RowPerfect. Dynamic rowers are supposed to be easier on the lower back, emphasis on leg drive and reinforces proper technique with every single stroke.

  • @SK_TorON
    @SK_TorON 6 років тому +1

    Thanks Austin! Whenever I see videos of rowers that are about rowing (not product placement), almost all of them are on Concept 2. I guess there is a reason for that. Speaking of Concept 2, a comparison that I would really like to see is between Concept 2 standard vs. dynamic. The latter is supposed to more closely mimic rowing on water, and a few years ago Eric Murray set a record for one-hour rowing on the dynamic (the record has been beaten by now, but that's beside the point). So apparently one can get a good workout on the dynamic Concept 2. But despite this rational conclusion, all the videos of rowing on the dynamic look to me like "cheating", which is probably because the seat is barely moving. Austin, if you have some experience of rowing on the dynamic Concept 2, can you share how it feels compared to the standard erg?

    • @mikobrown2953
      @mikobrown2953 6 років тому

      SK another way you can simulate dynamic rowing is with slides that you can set the (C2) rowing machine on. And you can get just as good of a workout on either a dynamic or a static machine except the splits may be affected so there are separate categories for dynamic and static records

    • @SK_TorON
      @SK_TorON 6 років тому +1

      Thanks Miko! The slides are out of the question for me for reasons of limited space. On the other hand, the absolute values of splits per se are not important to me either (not competitive enough, I guess), but being able to get a solid one to two hours of rowing slog is what I like most. So I really appreciate your advice that the dynamic can produce as good workouts as the standard. That's a serious argument in favor of getting the dynamic model as my next rower. Thanks again!

    • @trainingtall
      @trainingtall  6 років тому +1

      Hey SK! Thanks for dropping a comment and creating good discussion! Dynamic absolutely mimics rowing on the water closer than a static machine does. The dynamic creates the feel of the "boat moving beneath you" as you row. There is no question about it: any effort done on a static Concept2 can be beaten on a Dynamic machine. Because the machine moves beneath the seat, it is actually much easier to increase your stroke rate without using as much energy as you would use on a static machine.

      Just as in biking, "soft, cushy seats" cause bloodflow problems, when used over the long term. This is why road bike seats are generally much firmer than is comfortable for someone unaccustomed to them. The Concept 2 seat is designed properly. It is a bit of a disservice to customers to lead them to believe a softer seat is necessarily a "preferred" thing. Concept 2's have universally high ratings for a reason. One kinda needs to be experienced with specific equipment types in order to give good reviews on them. :-D

    I am curious to see how the Schwinn Crewmaster Rower would stack up against concept 2?

  • @philnsicab
    @philnsicab Рік тому

    I tried both machines and I must say I really prefer the concept 2.
    Firstly, the Matrix is really harder on the drive. Even at minimum difficulty, I find it harder that the concept 2 at level 5 (which is the level considered to imitate best the water feeling). Levels on the concept 2 going grom 1 to 10, this means that with the concept 2 you can work harder or easier than the real thing, whereas with the Matrix you can only work harder. For a beginner I think the Matrix is almost unpracticable, in particular for a beginner who wouldn't do sport before using the Matrix. I row for anaerobic usage, so for long durations (20 - 40 minutes). So I think the Matrix is best to keep for those who are really trained and want to work on short durations, and high intensity.
    Secondly, the feet are more spread out on the Matrix. For me it is to much and I prefer the feel on the concept 2 (I am 1,80 m high). Why ? Because the legs must pass between the arms. So legs more spread out means arms spread out enough to let the legs pass in between. I find this unconfortable, my feet touch a bit my arms when doing the movement while with the concept 2 I had never noticed any problem.
    Thirdly, the handle on the Matrix starts to annoy your hands after 20 minutes, because the rubber gives more friction than the plastic on the concept 2 handle. I love pull- ups so it is supportable for me but the concept 2 goes very easy with my hands in comparison.
    Fourth, the display is really better on the concept 2. I love to play the fishing game (and others too), and analysing the curve helped me (and keeps helping me a lot) with my technique, which is important if you don't want to hurt yourself. Also on the concept you can define precisely your intervals, whereas with the Matrix you must choose 1, 2, 5 .... minutes. For example, you can't choose an interval of 3 minutes ! I find this crazy.
    About noise, it is true that the Matrix is very silent compared to the Concept 2. Concept 2 noise is not very loud though, I never had the idea to complain about it. I certainly wouldn't change only for that reason because when I use the Matrix I immediatly miss the confort of the concept 2.
    So for me, it is a no brainer, concept 2 wins totally.
    Note : the concept 2 has another advantage that you can use even if you don't buy it : the videos and advices on the website are top notch, (I couldn't find anything on the Matrix website).

      At 6'8" I can actually hit the back end of the Concept 2 but on the Matrix there is extra room for if you are even taller!

    Technogym skillrow beats both hands down, unfortunately it costs more than both these rowing machines put together.

      Tecnogym is like Hammer Strength and costs 6000 dollars. Incomparable with these objects

      Nice -- I look forward to it! Agree so far with your assessment, but the magnet resistance on the matrix feels unnatural / less fluid to me.

      @@ToddStClair-vk4ov Concept D is $900. Matrix is $1895. I'm not a math scientist but pretty sure 19 is MORE than two times as much as 9. If you can sell me a new Matrix rower for $900...I'll give you my email and you can send me an invoice.
