Mike is a genius. How lucky we are to have these teaching videos.
I worked in construction for 35 years, with painting as my main business initially for a small employer and over the years also as a tiler, plasterer and installing kitchens and bathrooms, renovating new and minor maintenance and yes, going to school in the evenings to get my papers for each profession.
My boss paid for everything and said make it the way you would like it for yourself and make it right so that we as a small company did not have to come back there because it was not built properly.
Until my retirement I always worked for people with heart and soul and never had any complaints about bad work.
And if we took too long to do something my boss was not angry but said that he had calculated too little time for it.
I went to work every day with pride practicing my profession and that is now the biggest problem nowadays, no longer having a heart for the business and your profession.
The couple are lucky the rot didn't penetrate further into the home. The deck and bedroom wall were already very expensive to repair. Mike and the crew did an excellent job.
Good to see an honest roofer who realized how bad it was an instead of hiding it for the money told them it needs more work they can do. I would also sue the warranty company as well. This was likely pre-existing.
I love the way Mike is always teaching, always getting his crew to work through the problem and not just telling them how to do it.
They learn, and then we learn from watching the show.
I love the old and new episodes of this tv show
HAVE NOT FEAR, MIKE IS HERE!!! Loved this show
Great job.
We had awful mold problems in a new build here in Ireland and my wife got the builder around but his son came instead. He went around the house and he actually blamed us for breathing too much in the bedroom. Turned out both showers were vented into the attic. Incompetent builders can't take the blame for extremely poor building.
Warranties are mostly worthless and a total waste of money, as companies most always refuse to honor them.
lol 43 and one fourth....pure gold
Such a great group of people
This is the kind of guy you want to work along side. Learn everything.
One of the best contractors in the world
These people have got to be held accountable for what they do wrong
Love me some Holmes on Homes.
Great international that's how you learn GRAET JOB MIKE
loved this show,..you are awesome
i was thinking Unclee Ray good job
The edit @21:00 is great lol.
Top roof ice shield should go down BEHIND Gutter.
Otherwise Ice dam water back up can run into soffit.
Bath fan pipe to flange is not sealed/taped.
Moist air can get by connection.
I understand you rebuilt the original design but the original plan with the scuppers should have instead eliminated the short knee wall at the gutter and just let the water drain over the shingles with no restrictions.
Two rules of roofing.
1. Water runs down.
2. Pay day’s on Friday.
If you get the first one right, you get the second.
Roofing company FTW! Calling it a problem beyond their expertise, leaving the client with a temp roof over the top. Well done!
As a former Master Glazier we had a saying regarding water. "water will ALWAYS find it's lowest point"...words to live by. I have never in my entire career installed any window or door so poorly.
❤ man I wish he could come to my house and fix it
"not bad, eh?" @ 27:00 😆
That IS a major structural defect! Even I can see that. Its disgraceful!
just so u know the fans in bathrooms can be fire hazards as well... they need to be cleaned regularly... lint, dust can be flammable
All of those hidden surprises that Mike is finding 😮😢🤬😡😠
a lot of work, A slip form rock wall will last almost forever. only weak point is the roof, so build the trusses with welded box steel and a metal roof...lasts for generations .
I see you got a tv streaming channel 👍 , it’s saved on my 📺
Like these episodes ..
In Canada a rotted out floor and joists on a new house is NOT a major structural defect. God, how I'm glad I'm not Canadian!
Did you appeal the decision of the warrenty company?
John, we all know that your going to paint in now quit stalling and paint the old gal 😂
the glass on the deck is ok, but a good rock throw or a stone will break it
Well that's a major structural defect! Holy cow
Also, I wonder if the people who did these shitty jobs ever see these episodes and feel an ounce of shame or remorse.....
Maybe not, but even if they knew better, they're trying to earn a living and doing what they're told
Considering the fraud Mike has perpetrated against new home buyers with the Holmes Inspections, I sincerely doubt anyone feels shame.
Unfortunately some people only are concerned on getting paid not the quality
Damn that's in rough shape. 2.5 inches in that short of a span. How could whoever built it NOT notice that? You would feel it in your ankles just walking across it. Only thing I can think of is that they just threw it together and never checked a level because they simply didn't care and weren't going to "waste" material fixing it when the waste occurred by building it wrong in the first place
well its not supposed to be level. its supposed to slope away from the house so it drains away.
@chrisforgan731 You didn't watch it before you commented. If you had, you would know that the slope was toward the house and that's what caused the damage. It's why Mike had to raise the house side Three
@@TonyM1961 i watched it. it sloped towards the house.
@chrisforgan731 Which is exactly what I said, and if you listen, Mike says it's off by 2.5 inches. That means when he rebuilds the deck, he raises it more than 2.5 at the house... God why are you being so dense? A 2.5 inch slope from the front to against the house means all that water is being directed AT the house instead of AWAY from it which is why everything was rotting out. DUH
Or they messed up measuring and didn't realize until they'd built much of it. Finished it and let it be someone else's problem. All too common in the trades. Commercial jobs often have 3rd party inspectors checking work as it progresses. Also, better contractors gravitate towards bigger jobs, which are often commercial. Home developers notoriously are cheap and cut corners everywhere, including who they hire.
Do they let all the neighbors know how messed up their houses are and they should do a suit against the manufacterer?
they certainly know after they see their neighbors on this show
@@WAA329 that one didn't hold up in court, mike was specifically attached to a delux package (fulfilled to the letter as far as I've been able to find) while general builds were being handled by a contractor that turned out to be a corner cutting lier (mike dropped the guy for that)
@@prcervi Technically maybe, but still a bad look. From the news stories I saw, he was closely involved and was aware of the problems. Dropping the contractor isn't taking responsibility, helping to fix it would be. Again, illustrates that greed can make even good people do bad things. Mike should step up and make it right.
I've seen this so many times. Ppl hire carpenters because they don't know how themselves. Unfortunately, we have so many dishonest contractors
This guy looks like the private investigator from Jackie Brown.
Great advertising "for NEVER EVER USEING ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS !!
Try "true sleel framing " for any structural components !!
I'm not in the trade, but here in the UK it seems that beams are steel and not wood. These wooden beams also seem to be made from particle board and not even solid timber - crazy !
another issue with it is if there is a fire it looses strength fast which has caused injuries/deaths for firefighters.
that spray foam should be fire resistant as well....... not just the foam u sprayed from the small cans....
Name and shame to warn others of this company and so much for home warranty this damage obviously from faulty structure Thank goodness for you and your team or else thier homes would just fall down around them
@@suen2506 I'm pretty sure canada has slander laws
Why does it seem like almost all Canadian homes are either really close or connected to the houses surrounding them?
It's very common in the northern States in the US as well as in Canada to have semi-detached homes, i.e. fancy work for 'duplex' almost. You can build a lot more homes on a smaller lot instead of having to meet code enforcement for minimum lot size by doing individual homes. For instance down here in MS, min lot size in the city is 0.28+ Acres. In the county, it's about 0.23+ Acres (and surprisingly that's a big difference ... being able to 3 vs 4 lots out of a single acre). To get smaller, you have to get city/county board to vote and allow it after consulting neighbors and everything. Instead, if you build attached homes, you could build say 6-8 on that single acre instead.
Sadly, when their neighbors begin to notice issues with their structure these people will also feel the pain, as their townhome is structurally linked to the rest of their block.
Their builder is laughing on the deck of his yacht, floating off Bermuda.........................
Edit: Do Canadians not use ceiling fans?
And that’s why I will not use OSB ever. 😊
the only thing worse than chip board is particle board....both are krap .
Insurance is betting you are less competent, than your insurer company is dishonest. Not a great bet but lawyers sue insurance more than cops, so its the lawyers preferred prey.
EVERYTHING STARTS WITH THE FOUNDATION...OVERBUILD IT
Woah woah woah: Why would the roof you literally just reframed be bowing in towards the center?
They are on the existing beams, they didn't have to rip everything out. This is how you do it especially when structural components are shared between units.
I dont like that they used xps foam to support the deck! It doesent matter if it is xps its gonna sag and deteriorate. For this application there are plastic round leveling supports with rubber bottom so doesent cut into the roofing material overtime.
44:32 - boy, would I like to look underneath the neighbor's hot tub. I guarantee the structural part of that deck is not done right.
the whole complex is like that......
The homeowners get together and take the builders to court
Remind me not to use floor joists made out of OSB.
The builders have to be held accountable
the insurance company did not want to pay for it, they why they lied to the homeowner
i hope Thay the builder see this make it to the web not any work after this poor workmanship
again a new house is a major issue. they seemingly teach nothing anymore
Are the bricks real?
Holy shit, that was a shit deck
They made it very nice
good job mike
How is the warrantee company still in business? No structural damage? Sometimes I'm glad I live in the US where companies and builders like them would be bankrupted.
I can’t take Mike seriously anymore after the fiasco with the “Holmes approved” houses that had to be torn down because of poor construction and they were deemed unsafe by inspectional services
I really do enjoy watching these vids but omg, I cringe every time they're handling all these beams and things with NO GLOVES. Splinters are a thing, people, and an embedded splinter that generates and infection is no fun! Just...gloves!!
But, over all - good job, especially on being so considerate of the home and not letting dust and all just go everwhere.
That builder should be jailed! They should do a class action suit! This is criminal. 👿 What's up, Canada? 🤷♀️
I was a realtor. Do not use the warranty or buy one. These companies are designed for small stuff and will fight you tooth and nail if they have to pay a nickel for anything. Get a great..housing inspection before you buy.
Did mike end up giving Jordan a job?
God.... WHY is this garbage chip board even allowed in a house? My house has none, and most of the outside is Cedar. NOTHING rots. I wouldn't use that crap ANYWHERE. Yes, it's structurally engineered, but it doesn't like to get wet!
If that had been real lumber and not OSB junk...
pompous know-it-all. Holmes takes the attitude that only he knows how to fix things. There are many other experts out there.
u need to make the law change to not be "minimum standards" any more
mike is a good carpenter but he sometimes over kill and cost a lot of money that wasnt necesary
But seriously, nails?!
sham the builder bad work
You can't buy experience.
