Thank you so much! I am from Hong kong but younger than this period. Hong Kong been changing alot, and I love to see his old time. I feel touching and crying inside when I see this. Thanks
To this day I still remember the aroma of coffee around the corner of Pedder Street and the crystals at The Town and Country shop at Theatre Lane. Thanks again for posting. Fond memories!!
Yes, the aroma of coffee, from that cafe inside Gloucester Building with the green banded coffee cups? I am 70 now. I was inside that cafe and I loved the smell. Dairy Farm? Too bad my parent are long gone now, otherwise I could ask them.
wow! in a way it kind of still resembles what it looks like today. It's hard to believe how rapidly hongkong has changed and most people don't know what an exciting modern history hongkong has compared to other cities, and that change really accounts for a lot since so many have come and gone from this city. My grandfather has a tailoring shop in Central, in fact, still does today! Must be overwhelming for him to see the city change drastically, these videos make me understand him more. Thanks!
Wooow, I can recognize all these places. I lived in Central and everything feels like not too long ago. A newspaper stall was my neighbor's. If it was not 1997, I would never want to leave this place. Thanks for all these memories.
Thank you so much for providing us this time machine :) Now that we can travel back and forth to the 50's and even 40's to see how Hongkong people REALLY lived at that time. This is so different than seeing old Hongkong from a movie. Mr. Rogge, you are such a gifted file maker!
Michael is a legend through and through. You can see the genius in all of his camera work, correction..... cinematography. I can't get enough of these videos. However, part of me weeps when I see the "Old" Hong Kong consumed by the "New" Hong Kong of today.
Thank you for the footage!! my mom was still 5 year in 1962, but i totally love everything from this old hong kong. So much more beautiful the way it was. i really wish up in heaven, we got a chance to travel back to old hong kong
This is simply amazing! Thank you, Michael, for treasuring these valuable footages of HK in the old days. I am especially impressed by the high picture quality (don't know how you managed to do so). At 0.15, I think the building being constructed is the Mandarin Oriental...
Thank you very much Michael for sharing all these precious old films of Hong Kong where I was born and bred. They really brought back a lot of memory to me.
1962, my mom was only a year old. It's great to have no other voice over, one can hear the sounds of the street better. The clip still strangely feels so contemporary. Thank you for uploading it.
Thank you so much Mr. Rogge. I was born in HK in 80’s. It shows the good old days of HK. The people look satisfied, hardworking and energetic. What an amazing city!
In those days, many small trading companies in Hong Kong hired caterers to bring lunches to their office so that they could have lunch in their office instead of going out for lunch. Most of those caterers were family-owned business. At 1:53, you can see the man carrying lunch dishes on a tray on top of his head, and his child was helping and carrying more food right behind him. At 2:20, another man also carried a full tray of food. The trading company I used to work for located about 500 feet from where the video was taken. Everyday, the caterer would deliver freshly cooked food to our office. Thanks to Michael for another precious video.
@MichaelRogge Dear Mr. Rogge. I have followed your work since I first discover them here many months ago. Your excellent historic archive of the old Hong Kong will forever delight those grew up there in the era, especially to countless one who left the great city decades ago. Your work captured the daily life of the people and the allure of the former colony in it's struggle to become the pearl of the Orient.
I am so sad that I haven't seen the old Hong Kong. My first visit was in 2016 and been few times since. My favorite city by far. Hongkongers are fabulous people. Nice, polite, passionate. Cannot wait to go again although it is changing unfortunately.
It's amazing! I worked in Central for 20 years. Many spots I still walk by *everyday*! totally different of course. So good to see it's "Original" version.
Thank you so much for posting this. I know that the core of Hong Kong has never changed, but it's kind of heartbreaking to see that the city has gotten so much crazier since the days of old...
It is a great documentary film ! It makes me remember my memory of the old 1960's Hong Kong. In the film, you can see the food caterers carrying the meals over their heads !
Thank you for your reply. No wonder the resolutions are higher than the regular 8mm during that time period. That explains why they look so good. Your dates in HK back in the 49 proved to be a valuable one. Look at the streets, only a few people walked on by. I had a glimpse of that moment in the early 60s but those peaceful moments will never return. Only through these clippings we can trace back to those golden moments. Thank you for sharing these videos.
Thanks so much for sharing these precious films, I have been living in HK these last 12 years and only just cought the last 6 months of the Colonial era here, yet I have a great fascination for HK's bygone years, sadly I'm in the minority..thanks again, really great to see..1964 the year the beatles came too!
After doing some internet research, the newspaper headline appeared to be referring to the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 when Kennedy was the U.S. president. The missiles were dismantled on Oct. 28, 1962.
Thanks. A collection of my photo's of Hong Kong Kong in the fifties will be shown from 17th March 2010 in the Tao Evolution Gallery, 13 Circular Pathway, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong.
Nice to watch this clip showing the previous old time of Hong Kong Central, the place that I've just been recently. There are things that we can't see anymore... one of those is the elder people's living style in the old Hong Kong... Thanks for sharing ^.^
@artisticallyfree My films were also used in HK television history broadcasts. For instance in '1963' of HK Cable TV in which also old residents who lived at the time are interviewed.
Indeed I combined some movies around a central theme. The ones from 0,53 are from the early fifties. I had some additional scenes taken by a friend of mine in 1962 to complete my TV film.
1:46. great shot down Pedder Street from a high floor in Shell House. Tks, I always wanted to see orig. Central Bldg/bldg that used to occupy Landmark. My father had his office in Shell House, '74-'81 but his window faced Ice House Street. Used to hate the elevators in Shell House-they had strange walls with beveled steel ridges that hurt like hell to lean against.
It's absolutely stunning! The newspaper kiosk appearing at 2:57-3:01, is believed to be the one nowadays located outside Pedder Building, Pedder Street. It can be found in Google Map.
Yes, that was on Pedder Street. Also at 2:09, the camera was at the intersection of Pedder Street and Queen's Road Central. The Shell House was where the Central Tower now. The street going uphill next to the Shell House is Wyndham Street.
Michael, the videos you took, I have to say, are high quality ones. Much better than the ones I saw on youtube dated 62 to 64 period. Were you using 8mm?? Thank you for transferring the images to digital form, so people from the 60s are able to catch up some good old times back then.
Thanks. I took my videos from 16mm Kodachrome film and had them processed by a lab. I have also some clips of other people on my site taken in 8mm. But I had them also done by a lab. Moreover I added a sound track as most films at that time were silent.
These videos are amazing. I didn't realise that the City Hall high block and low block were built that long ago. The War memorial and City Hall memorial gardens are still the same. Sadly now it is dwarfed by the multitude of skyscrapers and you can no longer see (much) of the blue sky in Central.
1962 - ten years before I arrived in HK to work and live. So much of the old Central District has gone - replaced by modern buildings. The old Prince's Building, Mandarin Hotel being built, the old HK Club. So many memories. These were the years before Hk people became rich and very successful.
The camera angle where Mr. Rogge shot at 2:08 was on Pedder Street, the buses ran on Queens Road Central from eastward to westward. That 'strange' building was in fact a scaffolding structure where a new building was being constructed inside, it was located on Wyndham Street.
I'm 82 years old, so my memory and films are my time machine!
Hello Mr. Rogge, how are you?
Thank you for your film. Invaluable.
Mr Rogge, please tell us that you just become nonagenarian!
Your films are marvelous.
@@edmondhon1757 Thanks for your concern. Yes, I'm 91 now. Best wishes.
@@michaelijsbrand thank you for those vintage footage! It’s really valuable!!
thanks. it's valuable.
我在這一年出生. 我要多謝爸爸媽媽, 還有嫲嫲.
Yes, I have presented the Hk Govt. Archive and HK Museum with DVD's of these films, but they do not seem to be doing much with them.
I hope these are archived well, wherever in this world. These are well documented humanity.
History, especially the good one, is bad to rulers.
Present Govt. doesn't want to see these footages. It's a slap in their face.
Please never delete this
They probably don't care.
Thank you so much!
I am from Hong kong but younger than this period.

Rosida Andriyana aggressive but true...Hong Kong has no improvement once it has been returned to China. Let hkgers take control of themselves.
I just can't forget the rickshaw ride with my mom to catch the Macau ferry. Golden era. Thx for sharing!
It's amazing to see the spirit of Hong Kong being captured so long ago yet it reminds of modern HK so much. It is indeed a very special place!
Wooow, I can recognize all these places. I lived in Central and everything feels like not too long ago. A newspaper stall was my neighbor's. If it was not 1997, I would never want to leave this place. Thanks for all these memories.

Oh gosh! This is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your videos.i hope to see more of old hong kong
I was even richer! I filmed it on 16mm Kodachrome film. I left HK in 1961 and am living in Amsterdam, Netherlands now.
That shot was used in the title of HK Cable TV series '1963' !
absolutely awesome video. I was born 2 years after this video. This is like going back in time right in front of eyes

kykong, I can see that as well.
Thanks! I was trying to read it 🤔🤔
yes - and they didn't point out that it happened because the US agreed to move some missiles away from Russia also.
I loved it! I wish I had been there. Hong Kong was so beautiful back then!
Crazy! You have that high quality camera this day grandfather👍🏻
Great video although I do not recognise any of it. I love this type of footage. Thank you for posting it. I love the history.
0:27-0:29 the beautiful Hong Kong Club building, demolished in 1981, sad.......
I was so confused cuz I never saw that building before, sad it got demolished 20 years before I was born
Thanks for vids of 1967. I'm surprised that even in 1967 so much had changed already after the fifties , especially in Wanchai.
Thanks for your upload old central that is place I live in .
such a beautiful city! thanks.a lot uncle Rogge

Uncle Rogge,

Well done ! Thank you very very much indeed !
Yes, I understand that the big building boom started by the time you arrived.
@artisticallyfree My films were also used in HK television history broadcasts. For instance in '1963' of HK Cable TV in which also old residents who lived at the time are interviewed.
I was there in the year 1962 too ! I recognize most of the streets and building
simply amazing !!!
