Hikers are the only people who call that area wilderness. The locals recognize it as a working forest. Even Gulf Hagas is not in its natural state. Parts of the gorge were widened with dynamite to make log drives easier.
@@nickthinks1 I haven't hiked the AT through there but I'm in that region several times every year. I used to kayak through Gulf Hagas every spring. Now I go there to fish Nahmakanta Lake and the nearby ponds, Pemadumcook and the Debsconeags. I also spend time on the West Branch of the Penobscot and in the Seboomook region every summer. The part of Maine between Greenville and Millinocket is like a second home to me.
