At least in Brisbane, most Sealion 6 I have seen recently are the AWD, which is the Premium version. Given the competitive price tag of the Sealion 6 family, it is worth going for the AWD version to access the full enjoyment of this car.
In Poland with michelin premium tires (which they sell with) , 3 grown man inside and we did 7,9 sec 0-100 km/h, which is better than rav4 all wheel drive with similar torque. In BYD there is also launch control system, inside which u should turn on and it will show u how fast it was, and it even saves Your best times :)
That 3 link rear end.. jesus . Apparently a multilink version now exists, but don't think that's what the 'updated suspension' models will have , just new shocks.. Is this one updated? I think existing owners should be offered the new suspension tune tbh, that's quite piss poor otherwise so soon after launch.
Just a word about the screen which everyone seems to find so annoying, particularly those doing superficial reviews: yes, almost all vehicle adjustments can be made in the screen, but it is far better and _easier_ to set up the car using the screen, and then use the voice command to make _adjustments_ to settings. "I'm hot," for example sees the car's system respond, "All right, I'll lower the temperature..." The same goes for lowering a window, opening the sunroof, changing radio station. Etc., etc., and the car even recognizes the left side passenger from the right side. It only takes a cursory look at the manual - which is accessible from the main screen to discover this. And there are buttons aplenty for other things in the cabin on the steering wheel, door armrest and the centre console.
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia How on earth would I know the answer to that? Do you think that perhaps BYD might be better able to answer your question? One thing I like though is the area given to the map when navigating - it helps give me a good perspective of the terrain and/or the streets around me. In any event, far better than the minuscule letterbox on my 2021 Outback.
My seal does a weird surging/bobbing motion over humps n bumps that test rear wheel amplitude. It's something I've never experienced in my 60+ years of driving. Speed sensor sensitivity ?.
You should really go for the Premium model as the Dynamic model is aspirated but the Premium is turbo. A real big difference man in regards to performance and the price difference between these two models is insignificant and I assume most of ppl would pick the latter.
Turbo = more expensive 95 octane fuel and poor fuel economy. I'm not sure how a phev has far worse real world driving range to an AWD Rav4. Most reviews show a real-world driving range of over 1100km on its 55lt while the BYD claims up to 960km on 60lts or probably real world driving range of 800km which is quite poor when many non hybrids can achieve that range.
@ wtf are u even talking about bro, I have seen many ppl already achieving 1000km+ with the sealion 06, if u really wanna complain just wait BYD to equip the dm5.0 phev platform, right now for ozzy model it’s only dm4.0, the dm5.0 in China right now can reliably achieve 1500km+ range with full tank of fuel + fully charged battery and based on user’s reviews on Autohome it’s so common to achieve a combined fuel economy of 3-4L/100km with this revolutionary phev tech, stats don’t lie it’s always the truth. Can RAV4 or any other “self-charging hybrids” even run purely electric? Not damn way they can and so it’s not really positively contributing to the deteriorating environment and if u still insist that the 80-90km pure electric driving range of Sealion 06 is not enough then just wait for GWM’s newly launched Haval H6GT with that 180km of pure electric range. Peace.
@ The worst that a RAV4 hybrid can do is 6L/100km I assume and that’s also realistically the worst the Sealion 06 can achieve, so just give up already u can’t fool everyone here.
Looks like a decent effort from BYD. They need to work on suspension tuning, it needs a spare tyre, improve the value a bit more and ditch AP Eagers distribution. The result of the distribution arrangement is one of the worst new car warranties in Australia, limited spares and tech support. For such a complex vehicle I will only accept a full factory representation so that the ownership risk is reduced. For now this is no buy for me, others may be braver.
It seems it's very difficult to criticise BYD without fans/BYD staff commenting on here. In my opinion (which is what a review is), the vertical layout is not practical. It should not be an option.
With BYD hybrids, apparently if you press and hold EV mode it'll allow battery level drop to 15% before engine kicks in, would you do a low state of charge acceleration next time round? Potentially with the Shark 🦈?
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia I think we are all learning about this new tech, I will be test driving the Shark here in NZ next month, similar type of transmission. .
@@TerryHickey-xt4mf less reliant on the engine through the day. and if businesses don't have charge sites and open parking then this would be an advantage. plus the engine will be more efficient at nights
As always you've given us an excellent and comprehensive review - covering aspects of the car that other people miss. The BYD powertrain is very impressive (at least when new). What fuel consumption did you get? With such a large boot, they could have made the effort to include a spare tyre. The absence of a spare tyre rules out this car for me. The braking distance of 43 metres is a bit too long (that may be caused by the "ordinary" tyres that you mentioned earlier in the review). I am not a fan of the panoramic sunroof (in any car!). It has a wow factor upfront, but the extra maintenance, the risk of blocked drainage channels/leaks, the rattles, and the extra heat transmission on a decently hot day is a headache.
For a new car manufacturer, byd vehicles are ok , i am not a fan of those screens, it looks like someone just stuck a flat screen television onto the dash . No physical controls for climate control It may seem like just a simplistic design , however its really a cost cutting measure by not including a physical ac control dial. The 0-100 times is very good. Anything under 10 seconds from 0-100 is acceptable. Longevity is another story all together with byd which seems to release new models very quickly.
Voice command is a thing and it's so convenient to use as well, no fusses about it. What manufacturers need to accomplish is to integrate every essential control module into just ONE single UI tab instead of swiping from one to another (e.g. GWM Jolion's infotainment is not very good with this and Chery's Jaecoo J7 sets a very good example). Physical controls are prevalent in many Chinese cars as well except that most of them are not sold here in Oz but remember voice command is a thing among almost all Chinese vehicles (probably not so much for MG) and neither of the so-called legacy brands is putting this revolutionary tech into their low-to-mid-end of their lineups.
In my opinion PHEV's are the way to go with the best of both worlds in technology and with no range anxiety and the option of zero tailpipe emissions. Mitsubishi Motors is a pioneer in this area with the first generation Outlander from circa 2012, this is also the world's favourite SUV PHEV. PLEASE test and review the updated new Outlander PHEV when it's released in a few months, I believe it's battery range will be increased as will the power from 185kW to 225kW. My concerns two years ago regarding Chinese manufacturers flooding world markets with cheap slave labour built Chinese vehicles that are also heavily subsidised are now justified, I just didn't realise at the time the severity because we can now see that legacy brands can't compete on an unlevel playing ground. There are too many issues and compromises with the BYD sea-mammal vehicle, one of the most important features should be safe quality tyres which are missing here plus why would they shove an oversized $5 Chinese made swivelling tablet on the dashboard that dangerously obstructs the drivers view?...I don't believe this would ever happen in a quality legacy brand. As time goes on consumers will realise that the longevity of these vehicles is poor and when it comes to spare parts they'll be difficult to source so inevitably when they breakdown or after a collision the required parts won't be available or there will be a very long wait.
The BYD F3DM was the first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle in the world, introduced in 2008. BYD is already in their 5th Gen of their Plugin Hybrid technology, so good that Toyota is going to use it in their up coming Corolla. Proving its reliability. Consumer in China has already seen the reliability of BYD vs Japanese cars and they are not buying Japanese car at all. In fact Mitsubishi had to exit the Chinese Car market because their cars simply cannot complete in technology, build quality and reliability.
Can you explain how can a " cheap slave labor" nation able about to house most of their citizens, hardly any homelessness while your Sydney city alone probably have more homeless people on the streets than entire China. So a " sweat shop" nation able to feed 1.4 billion people, able to build the most modern infrastructure in world and still have money to invest overseas infrastructure and also money left to lend to your USA daddies in Washington DC.
