      66 years and well over 650 billion dollars to fire a tin can into the air and land a tin can on the ground. Now that's some serious progress!!!!!

      I was 17 when Apollo 11 was launched. I tape-recorded hours of Walter Cronkite's news broadcasts off the TV for that mission. I still have the tapes, but nothing to play them on.

      I think that is 100% intentional. From a physics perspective, it seems significantly easier to stabilize a load when you have a gimbaling rocket engine at your disposal, when it is coming in at an angle. You can use gravity and the rocket engine gimbal to completely stabilize, vs. coming in vertically. You can use both forces at your advantage, and cancel out other forces. Note, I am an enthusiast and am bad at physics so that may be wrong.

    I am lucky enough to have been born early enough to watch Walter Cronkite burst into tears as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon and to have lived long enough for Space X and Elon Musk make space launches a daily event. I am drawn to tears every time they launch and successfully land a booster. We need to stop squabbling over petty differences and get back to “Reaching For The Stars”!

  • @teodelfuego

    Query: why don’t we hear sonic booms on rocket launches? Is it because they are traveling vertically, not horizontally?

    • @jimurrata6785
      @jimurrata6785 11 днів тому +1

      Because the launch site is within the cone of the shockwave.
      Just like you wouldn't hear a jet going supersonic if it was flying away from you.
