Hi Becky, Thanks what a great video. I have been on the carvinore diet over the last three months. I eat meat and eggs avocado and I cook with butter. I have lost seven kilos in 3 months. My blood sugar results have gone from 6.9 to 6.1. My doctor couldn't believe it... So I will stick with this now and hopefully it will take me to a much better place.. Great video to by the way. Dr Becky. Thank you for your comments. Having worked in healthcare since the 1980’s it’s been devastating to see the BMIs of individuals increase so dramatically. It used to be a rarity to encounter an individual who weighed 400+ pounds... and now it’s common. We have extended seats on wheelchairs, in waiting rooms, and even hospital beds, with width and weight loads accommodating the 400 pound or greater individual. It’s SAD ... and unfortunately becoming increasingly acceptable. Your gentle, humble approach to this sensitive topic is appreciated.

Oh yes! I was always very slim and could eat whatever I wanted without putting on any weight. In my early 40’s I went through the change in one year! Again I was such a lucky woman, no sweats or anything my periods just dwindled and then stopped. And that’s when I started to gain weight and my maximum weight has been 13st 6lbs (I live in the U.K. and we use stones and lbs😊) I’ve been on a high fat diet OMAD for 7 weeks now and have lost 14lbs, after yo-yo dieting in the past. This is something I feel happy with and am happy to continue with for the rest of my life. I’m in my 69th year now and feel for my health and the rest of my allotted span happy! I really was so proud not being large and have been miserable being overweight. Nothing extreme just want to be as happy as I can in this ageing body of mine

I have lost 46 lbs eating this way that you just described. I am completely satisfied with my delicious full fat meals. I eat lots of non starchy veggies (as much as I want), fats and meats, eggs, nuts, and 90% dark chocolate as a treat. I usually eat 2 large nutrient dense meals per day. Food is my medicine!!!! For some people, that kind of chocolate in moderation is ok without any dangerous effects of the sugar, like spikes. I myself often enjoy once in a while, a piece of chocolate, usually around 80%, but I found some on Amazon that's 95%! Even 100%! So you can still enjoy chocolate with hardly, or no, sugar at all, while still getting the good minerals and nutrients that chocolate has to offer🙂

Two month ago I decided to avoid carbohydrates as much as possible, not as a temporary diet, but as a permanent. The reason was not to lose weight; that came as a side effect. The reason was to enhance my mood and alertness by reducing sugars.
The result has been truly amazing and one powerful argument for staying away from carbohydrates permanently; that reducing the sugar intake results in a (significantly rapid) weight loss is only a welcomed bonus :-)

Great video!! I did keto for over a year and lost over 58 pounds. Now I have the ridiculous notion to try out for a natural bodybuilding contest in the near future. Because of this new goal, I know that good carbs are essential for me in terms of energy and muscle glycogen. Therefore I switched to a more flexible approach to eating for the past few months. It’s a lot more work than keto, in that I have to track everything I eat everyday, but as long as I keep my calories in a deficit, I am losing weight and my body composition is improving. Hopefully I will be ready to compete next year, but man this is hard, when you get below 11 percent body fat, it gets tough and the progress is way slow. So I keep up the fight and move forward with all my might. Thanks again for the helpful videos, doc!!

It should not be a low protein diet either. One still has to have adequate protein and one does get to eat a bit more protein on a low carb diet just not excess protein. As you age you do need to hit the leucine threshold which helps to prevent sarcopenia. Look at professor Don layman's talks on protein. As we age we do not utilize protein as efficiently as we did when we were young. As we age we therefore need more protein not less in order to maintain muscle mass effectively. Strength training also helps with this so we don't become frail and sarcopenic.

Nicely presented - thank you. It's great to see medical professionals embracing this. Like you, I lived it. I changed and realized how wrong the established thought is. I lost a lot of weight while eating all these delicious, rich, fatty foods you are not supposed to. Mental clarity. Mood greatly improved (lots). My A1C tests went from 9-10 down to 6 and I was able to take myself off of Glipizide but I still use Metformin. This is eating real foods and cooking meals from scratch. From 180 to 139 lbs. in just over 4 months. It's a return to eating well. Not a fad diet. Put down the boxed frozen low-fat diet meal and go fry a steak in butter with mushrooms and onions. But add a little olive oil to the butter so it won't burn.

It is so interesting to me to be able to eat exactly the way I was brought up to eat: eggs and bacon for breakfast, beef and lamb from the local butcher, butter, fatty fish and lots of low carb vegetables (and potatoes and bread but I'm not having those now). Best concise general guideline on how to select foods for weight loss, and the general reasons why. This, coupled to your list of ranked carbs in terms of carb to fiber content is all someone needs to improve their weight level and health through nutrition. My experience is that ditching sugar as much as possible also awakens your tastebuds in appreciating real, unprocessed food. This counters the “boredom” that is mentioned by some regarding low carb food. Your videos are very educational and you make it easy to grasp and retain the material for practical use.

I make a wide variety of salads each week and this last year I started adding different types of seeds to our spinach, kale, veggie salad. I added hemp seeds, chia seeds and ground up milk thistle and it adds a whole new dimension and flavor to salad that is extraordinary. To our Asian salad I add sesame seeds and to my beet leaf salad I add raw almonds with a few chopped up apricot pits (not the apricot shell, just the pit inside of it that looks like an almond). Nuts and seeds have become a regular part of our diet.

I remember when I was a high school and college kid in the 1970s, and everyone was skinny by todays standards, even the older folks. I also remember the triumph of the food industry, high fructose corn syrup, being introduced into our diets as a cheap substitute for refined sugar in processed foods and sodas, as well as the trend towards "super sizing" our fast food meals. Boy, do these changes show in our population. It's awful.

@@lindahandley5267 Linda H. Me & my sister often talk about the good ol days when the foods were real, back in the 1960's & 1970's. It's sad that foods are so bad that folks are getting sick. Migraines, allergies & obesity. I feel sorry for parents and the battle they might endure with the kids wanting the junk foods nowadays splashed on every corner.
I do hope some day that the doctors or anyone who understands the food industry tells folks that all the crap in processed foods are making folks sick. I know this and we tell our kids it's bad for you. I have a friend who suffers from food allergies, my sister gets welts from GMO foods. It's awful. Your right, we are a sick nation. Great video Dr. Gillaspy. Several years ago I had a conversation with a beautiful female trainer at a gym I belonged to. She was incredibly healthy looking and fit. She did not look muscled-out or unnatural, just fit and naturally healthy looking. She gave me the best advice that I still adhere to to this day, which is to, “Eat straight from the earth.” I can still remember her saying, “If it’s not in its natural form, then don’t eat it.” She explained that our bodies are not intended to eat any processed foods that come prepackaged, hence all the obesity and health problems with Americans. I enjoy working out and keeping a well balanced life in general, but the biggest attribute to feeling good every day, that I’ve experienced, has been consistently eating foods that are straight from the earth in their natural form. 🥩 🐓 🥚 🥒 🥬 🍎 🥥

And in three months or so I will be having cataracts removed from both eyes. I also have bad breathing problems, sleep apnoaea and am morbidly obese. If, by God's grace, I come through this okay I will be fully committing myself to a low carb, zero sugar and healthy fat lifestyle. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
-Amino acids are building blocks, not protains.
-Animal protains has all the amino acids we need. Vegetables don't have them all, and vegetables contains a good amount of carbs which may elevate our glucose levels.
    - Carbs are metabolized as glocose
-High fiber carbs are still carbs. So if you eat a lot of it, your blood glocose level will be higher.
By the way, you look very good. You look way younger than your age.

Whilst doing some personal research on an insulin resistance diet, I stumbled onto your channel. I’m very impressed, not just by your knowledge, but also your demeanour and delivery of the information. Subscribed! I like what you have to say; however, what about those of us who would prefer a vegan diet? It’s so tough. I mean, of course there are proteins to choose from such as soybeans, tofu, tempeh, nuts and seeds. But, what else? I miss my beans and whole grains. Bought some wild salmon the other day, but after a few bites, had to abandon the idea. Feeling stumped as to how I can have a well balanced vegan insulin resistance diet.

Thank you Doctor for this informative video introducing some of the overall concepts to healthy eating. I'm 55 and a below knee amputee of 2 years. Adapting to my situation caused my activity level to suffer and so I started putting on more and more weight and was turning diabetic. Following advice from your channel as well as others, I totally cut out the carbs in a healthy way. My typical meals now include some sort of protein like steak, salmon, or chicken with the skin as well as sautéed vegetables in olive oil and some fruit such as apples, blueberries or strawberries. Occasionally I will have almonds or cashews for snacks. All of these foods are easy to find in the local grocery store or even in our family restaurant. I also make sure my portions are under control by calorie counting. I now hit the elliptical trainer 4 times a week. All of these have been a change from my previous nutrition and exercise but not totally bonkers and have been easy to maintain. No more sugar, flour or rice products. I have now hit my goal weight and lost 25 pounds in about 2.5 months! My latest blood work from a couple weeks ago indicated I am now almost back to normal triglycerides and A1c levels and my combined cholesterol is down to 138! Your channel as well as others' have been very motivational and informative. Thank you!

Be careful that you are not training too much. Training will not help that much in weight loss, max. 15%. Training will raise your cortisol levels and is only good, if it's not putting you in too much stress, It's all about balance. Health does not need that much exercise. Brisk walk 20-30 min per day (heartbeat of "180 minus your age") and 3 times around 20-30 min of HIIT training i.ex with weights is close to optimum for most. That's how I'm living now. Lost 20 pounds in last 5 months and my fat-% is now 18 and I'm soon 53. My recent blood work was perfect. I'm also doing IF in 16/8 pattern.

@@eniyemission474 90 is a good figure, But don't go crazy about counting. That type of insanity is the 1st thing will get you off of a good diet plan. Just use common sense and eat healthy. One of the things I added to my diet was a big salad every day. I actually like kale which is strange. I would dress it with flaxseed oil and put different vegetables and maybe some blue or feta cheese and hard boiled eggs. And green olives for a salty flavor. I'm a 63 year old retired public school teacher. Elementary school and Special Education.
I've been in gyms consistently since the early 1980's. Circuit training, boxing, kettle bells are my thing. CrossFit was great (summer 2012) and I would love to go back to it, alas it's but too expensive. The coaches gave me modifications where needed.
Glad to have found this video. This information to some is very new. It isn't to me.
I've been chubby/plump since childhood...never known what it's like to be truly lean, have muscle definition, the whole nine yards.
I have been following a Ketogenic/Paleo combination eating plan since 2014. I have also been throwing in what I've known about my blood type O+ . Gluten and grains don't agree with type O. My gluten issues started in the 1980's when it wasn't a household name. Plenty of homework to do on the matter? You bet and I have learned so much these 30 or so years.
After reading Dr. Peter Osborne's book "No Grain-No Pain", as of July 2016, no grains or gluten except organic non gmo microwave popcorn 🍿 come through my apartment. That's not very often either. That was the best decision I ever made...lost inches too. My clothes are for sure a clear indicator. I don't own a scale and haven't since the 1980's.
BTW - nightshade veggies are a no-no for type O. They contain a natural compound "solanine" that will aggravate arthritic conditions. I found this out ten years ago by accident.
Fats? Grass fed buttah, organic ghee, organic extra virgin coconut oil, and organic 100% olive oil are all that I use. Red wine 🍷 has managed to sneak in at times. Believe me I do try to stick to my guns 80% of the time.

For years I struggled with poor health until one day I went to see a Natural Doctor who was not quick to prescribe a drug to every symptom. He had me write down my foods I ate and how I prepared them. After he reviewed what I written Down, he suggested changes that I needed to eliminate & one of those changes were to eliminate Cooking oil & replace it with Broth or water with cooking. This has made a world of difference in my health. It wasn't easy to part ways with conventional norms but I was open minded and it worked. I never heard info like this from MD's I've always seen. Reputable books is another great source.

After the sudden and unexpected death of my fiance a little over a year ago, my grief was so deep I was barely alive myself. I wasn't eating more, but I took fewer long walks, runs and hikes. A year later when I stepped on the scale I couldn't believe I'd gained 20 pounds. I felt awful internally, too, but I figured the grief was slowly killing me. I've since learned that traumatic events can affect thyroid and other functions in the body. Although my TSH levels tested normal, I started watching UA-cam videos like yours and began to understand that my glucose and insulin levels were a big part of my problem. I immediately went on your 0-1-2-3 diet, then incorporated the keto diet and intermittent fasting. I went into ketosis fairly quickly and felt immediately better! I felt the inflammation throughout my body dissipate. It is very hard to describe but I had felt for a while that something was very wrong with my body. I realized, as the pounds were quickly falling off, that I had been in denial about carbs and sugars and the harm they were causing in my body. I clearly had become glucose intolerant and insulin resistant. And I had been a "low fat" eater all my life! Who knew?! Your 0-1-2-3 diet paved the way for what I can only call my recovery, providing the structure I needed to move forward. I lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks and another pound or more every week since (12 pounds in less than five weeks). I have 10 more pounds to lose. I am looking forward to my 41st day (this Saturday) when I will indulge in some favorite carbs, and I look forward to beginning another 40 days of my diet, which I also love. (As a Christian woman, I appreciate that number 40!) I have to admit, I often can't manage to eat the big salad and two cooked veggies a day because I stay so full for a long time after that salad. I love my keto coffee (it breaks my fast about 10am and buys me a lot of time until that nice salad), and I have found that my definition of "dessert" has shifted now that I don't crave carbs... those little Babybel cheeses are amazing little treats, and I love a stalk of celery with almond butter. I have also watched Dr. Berg's videos and your Two Fit Docs. I feel like I have discovered a full gas tank in my "car", one that runs more efficiently, that doesn't need constant refueling, and I feel like me again. I am so, so grateful for the work you are doing; I believe God led me to what I see as a ministry of sorts. This information can change lives. I hope to share this with as many people as possible. I can't afford your coaching or meal plan at this point but I hope to add those to my program should my financial situation improve. Thank you so much, you and your husband, for opening my eyes and bringing me back to health. May God bless you both.
