      Well to be honest, During the post presser, Sean called himself an autistic dude that did what he wanted in the octagon (paraphrasing here). So Dan thinking Sean wasn't open to learning wasn't that far off. "Open to learning" might indeed have been the wrong choice of words though, "hard to teach" might be more true.

    Thank god Dan’s not Izzy’s coach. He would wind up getting dogwalked again. Sean pitched a striking shutout against what has been claimed to be the greatest striker of the modern UFC. Nearly 50-45’d him. Izzy looked strong and confident walking out with a marquee gym behind him. Almost no one saw it coming, understandable, but most have had the dignity to admit they were wrong.

  • @ouruhuru
    @ouruhuru 9 місяців тому +25

    I completely disagree with the "Izzy didn't look himself" narrative. He didn't look himself because we've never seen him been taken so far out of his comfort zone in any of his UFC fights to date. That's the reason he didn't look himself. Sean didn't overly bite on the faints, had Matrix-level reflexes that allowed him to see everything coming, and just walked him down for the entire fight. The situation was compound by the fact that he dropped Izzy in Rd 1, which added to the menacing nature of how he was being walked down - aka he had to be on guard knowing he'd be knocked out with another straight right on the button.
    We talk about fighters who aren't grapplers gassing out after going to the ground multiple times, but the same is generally true of fighters who aren't used to going backwards for five rounds. The pressure wears on you and it was this constant back-peddling that had Izzy knackered from round 4 onwards.
    The fight was all of a piece of Sean *making* Izzy not look himself.

    People talk all day about the holes in Sean’s defense, but he statistically has some of the best defense in the UFC. His eyes, instinct, and reaction time are unique to him and impossible to appreciate unless you get in there with him. When he is on, he can parry everything. Literally everything. Izzy’s boxing got exposed. He got out-struck for 5 rounds in boxing range. That’s what happened. He has a giant whole in his game…

    • @alexbonesjones7570
      @alexbonesjones7570 9 місяців тому +8

      Absolutely I’ve been saying this. Sean’s defensive awareness is world class. And to me, that is the single almost important attribute in fighting. If you have that all you need is a few well timed basics to mix and mash. Tried and true formula from boxing

    • @alexbonesjones7570
      @alexbonesjones7570 9 місяців тому +7

      Sean also has the perfect style to beat Izzy. Whenever we see guys do well against him, it’s always with a tight defence and snappy jabs (and low kicks with alex ofc). Izzy will always see the big shots coming and he doesn’t like going first.

      Completely different defences but similar to Chito it’s under recognised by the commentators and judges. Vera, he got dominated by Sandhagen and also Font landed a lot on him on the stats card, but what isn’t ever noted is where they land, which is mostly shoulders and hands. It’s why over 5 rds I expect him to land heavier on Suga and get him out of there.

  • @coltizz
    @coltizz 9 місяців тому +46

    That’s simplifying what Sean did and therefor your are also discrediting what Sean did, that nobody except Pereria has been able to do to Izzy. And that was Sean’s ability to cut Izzy’s movement off but at the same time not putting him self at risk for counters as well as not fall for his faints.
    And being able to deflect almost all shots thrown at him while not giving up to much space. And always keep the pressure to keep the pace on him. As well as perfect shot selections and always be aware of the counters coming back. Nothing Sean did was easy, what he did was brilliant.

    Strickland possibly learned a lot from his time with Pereira. He was less reactive, utilized his rear hand better, checked leg kicks for first time in his career, and cut off the cage exactly as Pereira did. Strickland looked very different and Adesanya did look like himself. Not an off-night. Adesanya looked sluggish cause he got knocked down, beaten up, booed, and could barely land anything. He was discouraged and lacked the usual spirit spurring him on and keeping him sharp. When a counterstriker can't land they either get desperate or they just keep waiting for a perfect shot that never arrives and slowly fade the entire fight.

      Yep, Strickland has been more active and was the replacement. He was also the one with the bad weight cut AND jet lag. That copium makes ZERO sense. I hope they do the rematch soon too because I think Strickland beats his ass again. There was literally zero indication that a tweak here or there would change the outcome. Dan comparing this to O’Malley/Aljo-and claiming Izzy would win most fights against Strickland-has completely destroyed whatever credibility he had. Aljo got caught with a perfect punch early in the fight. Strickland dominated Izzy for 5 straight rounds and Izzy had NO answers. Pereira said before the fight that Strickland was a bad stylistic matchup for Izzy and that he was the middleweight most likely to shut Izzy down, and he said after the fight that Izzy is very unlikely to win a rematch. Anyone with even half a brain who watched that fight would clearly see he’s right and that all the self-styled UA-cam “experts” are just talking out of their asses.

    One of the things I noticed (as a complete armchair analyst) was the way that Strickland mixed following and cage-cutting in a way that gave Izzy space to move backwards a lot more before re-engaging. This seems like it may have been deliberate, to tire Izzy out from backpedalling, like getting a fish hooked, and letting more line out, then reeling it, letting it out, reeling it back in.

      @davidng8870 9 місяців тому

      But why did no one see that he is supposedly the better boxer until now?
      I think people are going overboard with reimagining Strickland now that the fight has occurred. His defense is good - i said as much in the comments on the pre-fight show that his skills are narrow but deep - but they are not that good. The man was made an absolute fool of by Pereira and even Abus was teeing off on him in the first round. Is he really better than Izzy, who has beaten Alex, Rob, Kelvin, etc in the pocket?
      I do think Izzy was off, whether cos of the press conference / allegations or overlooking Sean or some other reason. That sequence where he got dropped was particularly egregious imo, he played an obvious game of possum and then threw a naked left hook not as a counter but while Strickland was still lining him up for the right. I think Strickland also made him very uncomfortable because of his forward aggression, not reacting sufficiently to feints, and Izzy being unable to back him off enough to give him space. Who dares win essentially, similar to the Alex fights bar the finish in the second. But beyond these obvious points i dont have any answers for why the man who while not his best skillset perhaps is still a dangerous counterpuncher in the pocket with am edge in speed, power and technique over Strickland was completely unable to get anything off

If you beat a great martial artist (with no injuries and a great camp) with your own martial arts then you are a great martial artist. Simple as that. I personally find him very satisfying to watch.. his constant sparring having fine tuned his unique style like a great violinist who puts in 6 hours a day. You can see all that work and where it's gone. Amazing performance. He won, Izzy didn't lose. Eugene was first to admit that. And as Sean himself said after, he's one of the greatest strikers in the UFC.. I don't understand why you can't see that too. But thanks and keep up the great work! :)

    I dont think the results would be different. In retrospective Izzy has no answer, no ability to get started. Sean only fights in the moment which nullifies everything Izzy tries to do by setting things up. Sean did better at handling kicks but I don't think his guard looked tighter or he stopped reaching. The Pereira fight was a case of zig when he should of zagged and with Pereira one wrong zig and you sleep, Izzy can't really do that, he relies on setup.
    Izzys signature shovel hooks uppercut hooks were completely nullified vs Strickland's shoulders and only served to leave him venerable. To win this match up Izzy would need new tools, dangerous ones and I don't think at this point he could implement anything effective enough. I think Strickland would win 8/10 times TBH. Which before the fight I did not expect this, but he is a natural counter to the man.
    If you wanna see an improved version of what Strickland does thats less personalized and more effective, Joe Pyfer utilizes a more much subtle... I dont even wanna call it philly shell anymore cuz its not. I could do a whole breakdown on these gaurds but just watch Pyfer vs Merschart to see the direction MMA gaurds are going.
    Lastly, you even said yourself in the breakdown imagine if Strickland actually tried, as Teddy Atlas says becoming a champion makes a fighter 30 percent better. In this case there is a scenario where we see a much higher jump then 30 percent. But can he utilize the "in the moment skill" that got him to this stage and change also who he is or do these things walk hand in hand? Very interesting stuff.

    Sean Strickland had better hands than Izzy. He was able to parry and block Izzy's jabs which caused izzy to frustrate and make mistakes. The other thing is the pressure was intense and Izzy couldnt settle to really get his kicks off. Also Strickland's confidence began to sap Izzy's confidence throughout the fight. Sean is a good matchup against Izzy. He is the antithesis to Izzy's style. Sean got away with alot of things because he didnt fear Izzy's punching power. Also He trained with ALex and Alex told him how to beat Adesanya. Alex also taught him how to block leg kicks. Alex has a better leg kick than Izzy. So when it came to blocking Izzy's leg kicks it was no problem.

    Prat seans style worked perfectly. Izzy had no answers and failed to land over 100 strikes to the head against Sean. Sean didn’t even throw that many the whole fight. It was a defensive masterclass.

      No you brainless twat. Most people were picking Israel but only scrubs were completely discrediting sean. Even now he's discrediting sean and saying Israel beats him almost every time they fight. Get a clue 😂 the guy doesn't deserve to be defended. He's arrogant af.

    Sean embodied something Bruce Lee said, with his constant offensive pressure and while still maintaining solid defense. Bruce said "The best defense, is a defensive offense."

    Surely Dan knows by now pereira worked with sean and told him the gaps he exploited and helped him fix them in sparring. There is video of it and I'm going to guess he passed on advice on how to best adesanya aswel

    Teddy Atlas mentioned something, he said Israel wasn't as Bruce Lee like as he used to be. I noticed that Israel didn't throw a single knee stomp, I thought it was because he was being smothered and didn't have the room, and then I also realized that Sean lifting up his knee, likely also discouraged the knee stomps

    You’re not saying what Strickland did, every punch from Israel rolled off his shoulder. How do you see Izzy winning 8 of 10? And you watched it 3 times?

    Unless you are shooting on film or a video camera from the 1999s, you do not need super bright lights... just pick colors and directions that look good.

    Here's my hot take. I think Izzy would have went to war with DDP, like he did with Kevin G. but for some reason, he didn't have that same fire in him for Strickland.

    Dan, you've forgotten more than I'll ever know about boxing. But I'm glad to hear you appreciating Sean's gritty, stalking style now. I've loved his greasy, weird style and especially those "slap-style" long hooks...then the volume. I think all men appreciate fearlessness and a man who can "ignore" what's coming. Hope he can stay there awhile - it's an intimidating weight class...
    Keep on keepin' on, D & V. ❤

    I'm disappointed by the analysis that Adesanya had an off night and Strickland had a good one. It was 25 mins of domination. Surely a simpler explanation is that it's a bad matchup style-wise for Adesanya

    "He's a bad representation" was one of the worst I've heard lately.

    Hardy staying salty because seans style isnt pretty….Having the highest striking defence should be cherised, and going by how effective his style was maybe you should try to understand it rather than undermining it? Every style has it weaknesses, it doesnt realy say much when the only thing hardy sais is that it is full of holes….when he has the HIGHEST STRIKING DEFENCE!

    31:15 what a terrible question.
    That’s been the blueprint. Alex showed us, Gastelum showed us, and now Sean showed us again.
    Izzy does not have good boxing, he doesn’t mix up his striking. He throws one at a time and throws naked kicks without any sort of set up, nothing off a jab. Didn’t begin a combination and end with a kick. And he was merely head hunting like amateurs I’ve competed against in Muay Thai.
    Alex sets up his strikes. He pumps his jab and when you think he’s gonna jab, it’s a lead hook. When you think he’s going to throw his hook, it’s a leg kick. When you think it’s a leg kick it’s a straight to the body, then jab, jab to the body, lead hook, then body kick, lead hook to the body, then 1-2 knee.
    Alex constantly gives you something to think about vs Izzy is mostly your legs and his feints then his ugly shoulder snap lean back hooks

    Sean did what he had to do.
    He did the only thing I thought he could do when striking to win.
    I ran the fight in my head so much beforehand.
    Never really saw Sean winning, knowing how to beat someone and then doing it, while almost having to be flawless in the process.
    That's a complete different thing.
    Strickland was exactly that, flawless while pressuring, not allowing the feints to do their work.
    Being the more reactive fighter.
    Watching Izzy like a hawk the whole time.
    What you see in a fight is one of the most important factors.
    Because what you don't see will knock you out.

    If anyone says he looked out of it they can only judge the way he looked before he got almost TKO’d in the first round.
    I’m tired of people saying he looked out of it.
