I don't even have a clutch to do on a mondeo however I found myself watching this video. That's when you know you have found a very good UA-cam channel. However I did recently change a clutch and flywheel on a mark 1 Kuga for my mate and did the job on axle stands on his driveway. I realised the biggest mistake I made whilst doing that job........ I NEVER TOOK MY JACKET OFF AND GAVE IT THE ALAN HOWATT LAUNCH ACROSS THE WORKSHOP! Fantastic!
Andy C I’ve had diesels from new 1995 Estate , 2007 hatch, 2015 Estate I currently have (useless Peugeot in between) and never had any major or expensive problems or replaced any clutch having done up to 175,000 miles in my cars unlike other makes with family that German always going wrong between dealer services.
Literally binge watching your videos at the moment just to get a good understanding of what I've got now, how lucky can we be to have a guy on UA-cam who's easy to watch and listen too, talk about nothing other that the car ive not long bought, having had some issues with it your videos have helped every single time.. not just that but I'm learning alot about the history of the different models, keep up what your doing pal it's definitely helping and entertaining 👍 merry Christmas and all the best for the New year 😀

You're a lucky man working for a taxi company, by the time these cars get worn out and rusty they will all have been sold on or scrapped. This job would not be much fun on a 10 year old car where the rust has set in.
Hopefully I'm not tempting fate but I'm happy to say my 08 MK4 has done 205000 so far on the original clutch, and battery thinking about it. No major problems from new. Best car I've ever owned :-)
Gear selector cables - oh my god! I lost about a day just trying to take them off my old S-MAX!! Turned out, the collar near the plastic connector moved forward / backward and the things popped off. Wish I'd known,
Same on the transit 350 pre 2018 (I think) there's a stupid bolt behind the exhaust and the last one I did of that I yeeted the bolt across the workshop!
Its the minefield the mechanic has to go through nowadays to do a job, the location of parts, access to do the job, plastics, & electrics constantly trying to catch you out and trip you up, even changing a bulb you have to take the headlamp out.
Alan you're a legend I am pulling the box out of my mk5 this video is big help especially that higher of a bolt beside the dpf,who's bright idea was it to stick one there,
Hah! In the Haynes manual fashion "Installation is the reversal of removal!" Looks like a right chew on to do a clutch. Back in my earlier days Mk4 Cortina two hours start to finish!
Well done Alan. As always. I see, all repair jobs in this model (and other modern cars) is a dark nightmare. I still have my Mondeo MK5 with high mileage (+200k miles) and still going very well. But If something will go wrong with it I will not have any idea what to do. Will I have got any guarantee if I give my car to any service guy, he will do all necessary job (mentioned here) as best as he should? Even the smallest screw, cable, plastic pins, brackets will be mounted as it should be? No I don't have such guarantee. And here is a lot of work to do and this work needs to be done very well. Otherway after few thousend miles something other will be damaged or broken. And the circle is closing...
Is the oil from the driveshaft seal? I thought it might have been the rear main seal gone causing the slipping when I saw the oil, but obviously not. My dad had a new peugeot 206 with a failed rear main, that contaminated the clutch and started slipping.
What is going on when u have to dismantle most of the car to do a clutch! Lazy engineering makes for busy mechanics! Fair play to u Alan u have ur process sorted, speed was always the thing when I was in the garage as we all liked to make some bonus😂😂.
@@alan4x thank you. So i have a bit of an odd one which i'm hoping you might have some kind of idea or suggestion. Basically changing gears is a little difficult. Not really crunching, just difficult and not as smooth as it was/should be. I've changed the clutch master cylinder already as that was weeping a small amount of fluid and that has improved it very slightly but it hasn't cured the problem. Pedal feels fine and always has. All bled up okay after changing the master cylinder. Now here's the strange part, sometimes suddenly the gears become really easy to select and gearchange feels as smooth as butter, for a short amount of time then it will go back to how it was. The car isn't losing any brake fluid as far as i can see. The level is as it was when i finished changing the master cylinder a few weeks back. What do you think? My car is a 2015 focus st 2l diesel fyi, so the same engine as the mondy.
@@stevehunt8122 this might be nothing but i had a 2012 mk3 focus with stiff gear change and where the gear cables connect to the levers on the gearbox inside the plastic cover one of the studs that make up part of the gear change mechanism had managed to unscrew itself from the gearbox casing....screwed it back in and all was good again

Al can't get a new DMF from anywhere, going to have to go second hand reluctantly and still have the new LUK one on back order. Are you getting the same supply problems.
Do you think it's worth me buy a 2010 Ford Mondeo with 130k and a broken timing chain/belt for £500? It fix by replacing the head and new chains/ and belt
Just had a new Borg and beck clutch fitted as the dmf was faulty and made sense to do clutch at same time. Clutch pedal was nice and light with old clutch. With new one it feels very stiff ( causing me back ache). Any idea if it could be faulty pressure plate or some fitting error?
Bloody hell, what a palaver. I remember the mk2 Cavaliers taking an hour to change a clutch. Designers clearly no longer have any concern for maintenance. Happily leave that one to you.....
When I worked at vauxhall we used to time it takes from on ramp to off ramp think 8 minutes was the record astra cavalier Two man job one in car pressing clutch for clips and other ripping the blank plug and circlip for output shaft Oh maybe the apprentice in the car or turning flywheel Till the 5 speed came out and then it was about 25 minutes
Hello mate ,recently had a clutch fitted to my mk 5 and it now clunks on left hand down,looked underneath and everything’s right ,the sub frame looks slightly of from its original marking ,you think this would cause it ,many thanks paul
ALAN Got car back from garage after having clutch master cylinder, clutch return spring kit and 1 back brake calliper done. The car starts the quick way of putting foot on clutch first and pressing button. The car does NOT start when you press button for ignition let lights go out then clutch and button together , it just shuts off. Any help? I have done 40000 miles in mondeo always click button and let dash load first then start never has it switched off but garage saying nothing wrong. The way to start it is clutch and button. They are taking another look after i had a video of another mondeo starting. Cheers
Hi Alan. One question - in my mk3.5 Focus 2.0 TDCi, manual MMT6 gearbox, the same as in this video, I saw a little bit oil sweat on the gearbox chassis. It’s at the bottom. I’m suspecting a crankshaft seal or high pressure fuel pump gasket. But the second suspected looks fine - no signs of oil around pump, looks dry. Question is that, it is possible to remove gearbox without touching the subframe? I see some nice room to let gearbox go down, all screws are good to get, even that one around exhaust (focus had different exhaust). What do You think Alan? It will be a lot easier, but it is possible? Please help. :)
i am not familiar with the focus but if it is the same as the mondeo then the subframe would need to be removed...there is a 17 plate focus coming in soon for a clutch so if it happens i will make a point of it

But for practice - I'll be waiting for Your experiences. I've also seen that bloody crankshaft seal - it may be hard to remove and much harder to put the new one in place :)

Hi Alan, I have Smax mk2 2.0 diesel with manual gearbox, so it’s same as „your” mondeos. On top of gearbox there is bolt/plug same as two on side for filling and draining gearbox oil. There is no washer, no seal. Issue is, oil is leaking slowly thru that plug. Does it happen often? Can it be sealed?
What mileage was on it out of curiosity? When you were removing that 13mm bolt behind the dpf. I was thinking to myself well there’s no bloody way I’d be putting that back in! Then you said bye bye! i actually burst out laughing. Great video!

Mk5 Mondeo 110kw 2016 - when car is not used for more than 2,3 days, always having a problem to put in 1st and R gear (not possible at all until move a bit car in 2nd or 3rd). After a few minutes of drive, it is ok again. Also, slightly I feel the car moves when put in 1st gear. Any idea?

Hi i have problems with 2016 ford mondeo making noise front left hand humming noise the faster i drive becomes louder noise i have change wheel bearing and the router and the tyrese still having the same noise under 60 km i don't hear the noise over 60 km the faster goes the noise going louder. i hope someone help me with this problem
2017 and needing clutch replacement? Wouldn't surprise me! Got 2017 Diesel Titanium with 120,000kms (74,000miles) on it, and had 2 gearboxes replaced under warranty, and 2 seals replaced, 1 in warranty, and one as a gesture of goodwill outside of the warranty. Bye bye Mondeo before the year it out. 👋
@@jothain not realy considering that city driving kicks 7 bells out of a clutch..if they need changing more frequently than most at a cost near the 1k mark then i'd consider it quite usefull info.
@@jase4929 Well there is substantial amount of money and time difference between city and normal road driving. Plus city driving style has always been a substantial factor too.
My mate and I done the gearbox, clutch and flywheel on my wife's zafira at the beginning of the year, fucking nightmare 😱anyway, we had the subframe loose and the gearbox hanging, but it was about an inch short of coming out completely, after much head scratching, my mate noticed there was a little wire attached to the subframe, so I popped it off, subframe fell and gearbox literally flew out in midair, we shit ourselves 😆😆

i think it came from laddaw windscreen suppliers in bedford but it used to have a blue sheaving on it which fell off

Yes there is a supply issue but I am still getting the flywheels from Ford parts plus although they are not cheap.

Why are the Mondeos not running Automatic gearboxes ? there will be no wear and tear on the clutches , especially in high mileage driving

Hi. That bung should have a very thin ‘o’ring built into the plug. If it is missing you can fit a new bung or fit a copper washer or just use sealer

it was on 158k miles... i am thinking about less work if i have to remove that gearbox again

Is the procedure roughly the same Peugeot 308 with the same engine?
most front wheel drive vehicles will have a similar approach to removing the gearbox but obviously on the Peugeot there will be differences

Is that the original clutch Alan? 158k is good going for a Mk5
yes it is but some ..mainly flywheels rattle at less than 100k miles....these flywheels and clutches average between 100-150 k miles
Is there wet and dry side to the gear box.
When I was watching the bit with that bell housing bolt with the cat I said fuck putting that back in😂😂

Hi i have problems with 2016 ford mondeo making noise front left hand humming noise the faster i drive becomes louder noise i have change wheel bearing and the router and the tyrese still having the same noise under 60 km i don't hear the noise over 60 km the faster goes the noise going louder. i hope someone help me with this problem

Wouldn't surprise me! Got 2017 Diesel Titanium with 120,000kms (74,000miles) on it, and had 2 gearboxes replaced under warranty, and 2 seals replaced, 1 in warranty, and one as a gesture of goodwill outside of the warranty. Bye bye Mondeo before the year it out. 👋
What's the millage of that clutch? We've got a mondog that's got over 300k on it and still on the original clutch.
Meaningless information, I mean that mileage question. You need more information like city driving etc.
@@jothain not realy considering that city driving kicks 7 bells out of a clutch..if they need changing more frequently than most at a cost near the 1k mark then i'd consider it quite usefull info.
@@jase4929 Well there is substantial amount of money and time difference between city and normal road driving. Plus city driving style has always been a substantial factor too.

My mate and I done the gearbox, clutch and flywheel on my wife's zafira at the beginning of the year, fucking nightmare 😱anyway, we had the subframe loose and the gearbox hanging, but it was about an inch short of coming out completely, after much head scratching, my mate noticed there was a little wire attached to the subframe, so I popped it off, subframe fell and gearbox literally flew out in midair, we shit ourselves 😆😆
