  • Many of the 1999-2006 GM full size trucks and SUVs have just basic power mirrors that are nothing special to write home about. But a decent number of these GM vehicles came with some nice features, such as built in turn signals, vanity/puddle lights, heat elements for. cold weather, and even body color front caps. The process of swapping out a pair of basic mirrors to ones with some, or all, of these extra features is. incredibly straight forward, especially since GM used the same power switches in the front doors across the entire full-size truck/SUV line. So check out how to make your 02-06 Avalanche. look just a little better if yours has the base mirrors on it.

    Just wanted to say THANK YOU! Heavy winds and errant tree limb wrecked my mirror. Your video was clear and easy to follow even for this woman with little experience. Really appreciate your knowledge and upload. Agree with the other comments re: your other truck mods. 😊.

      I appreciate that! She's my daily, but even with the overland build (slow as it is) I like to keep my vehicles looking fairly sharp.

    Your old two Chevy avalanche didn’t have the signal light to the mirrors what do you do about the Glatt going to her that the wire going to the new mirror

      The turn signal wiring is built into the factory harness, but these will not have it as a running lamp.

    How do you get to wire for your signal lights because you’re old to have lunch did not have it in the mirror

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  2 роки тому

      For 03-06, the harness is the same for all factory mirrors (excluding tow mirrors) so it’s just plug and play. 02’s might be a little different due to GM doing a big electrical update in 03

    Tell me about your rack and tent on the bed panels please.

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  4 роки тому +1

      I'll start with the easier of the two.
      The RTT is a Smittybilt Overlander that I have oriented to open off the rear of the vehicle. I have it mounted over the bed via a pair of Yakima 48" round bars that use their old Q-tower/clip system. These towers sit at the edges of the bed panels and the clips that secure them latch to the underside of the panel. it's a simply pressure system and it works well. I have it set up so that a bar is on the middle and rear panel and then the RTT mounts to those bars.
      The roof rack is a little more intense. My Avalanche didn't come with the factory roof rack, so I had to find one. But, I couldn't find any Avalanches or Escalade EXT's in any of the junk yards around me, so I grabbed one off a 99 Tahoe (before GM changed the rack design to have the big end caps on the rear). I then simply measured the length I would need to make it fit the Avalanche, cut it down to size, and then drilled new holes for the front end caps and the mounting bolt. From there was the "measure 5 times, drill once" method of laying the rack on the roof, making sure it was centered and aligned properly, then marking the roof for where I would need to drill for mounts. I used 5 aluminum nutserts (thread inserts) on each side. To make sure everything was waterproof I put a small bead of RTV gasket maker under the cap lip of each nutsert. Laid the rack back on the roof and then used 1/4-20x1.5" stainless steel panhead bolts with a neoprene washer then a stainless washer to secure the rack to the roof. I've had zero water leaks.
      The cargo basket is simply one of ROLA's models that I bought off Amazon. I measure the roof and then purchased the basket that would fit the dimensions and have clearance for the tent when it's opened.

      Man, i would to see you doing video for the tent. I am thinking about getting my brother’s 03 avalanche z71 to over landing ready.

    Can you install a mirror that have the turn signal on it and the damaged mirror doesn't?

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  Рік тому

      Yea you can. The harnesses are the same. Just be sure to stay within the year ranges for the electrical systems (99-02, 03-06).

    Hey brother wonder where u get mirrors from?

  • @lindagreen7270
    @lindagreen7270 3 роки тому

    You show 2 different mirrors. Can you hook either one up? Or do you have to hook the identical mirror to what you already have up? My mirror has all the bells and whistles. I’m wondering if I can just hook up one with no heat or puddle light.

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  3 роки тому +2

      The black ones were the factory power mirrors that only had the heated elements. The other set is a pair that are heated and have the turn signal and puddle lamp. GM used the same harness on their trucks, so yes, you can run a different mirror without issues. The biggest thing is to stay within certain years due to electrical differences. 99-02 are all interchangeable, and then 03-06 are all interchangeable.

      @@takeroadslesstraveled6505 I bought a mirror from Amazon and returned it because it only had 1 wore to plug in when my mirror had 2 wires to plug in. I thought they were not compatible. I will not pay the $500.00 that GM wants for a new mirror. Thanks for your reply!

      @@takeroadslesstraveled6505 my question to you would be I have a 2002 Chevy avalanche so can I buy tow mirrors with the turn signals in them and just plug them up or would I have to tap into the turn signals to get them to work cause my factory mirrors don’t have them?

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  3 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure you'll have to plug into the turn signal. 2003 saw a big electrical system change for the GMT800's, so really be sure to do your homework before buying anything.

  • @dougfaries1065

    Also the roof rack.

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  3 роки тому

      The rack is a little more involved, so I've got to spend little extra time on that one, just because I didn't video the modification or installation of the Tahoe rack that I put on the Avalanche.

      Weird, my 02 originally came with paint matched mirrors and puddle lights already (no turn signal though)
