Dave's humor in the early days was the best ever, ever imo. It's 40-50 years old already and still can bust my gut
Johnny and Dave are two of the kings of late night, who are absolutely irreplaceable!
Dave credited Johny for giving him a shot at his first big time stand up opportunity. Johnny also lobbied for David to take over the Late Night spot after Tom Synder retired.
Two of the best talk show hosts of all time.
@@hatchedague how'd Leno do for you, esteemed foot washer?
Yep, agreed!!
@@siggylloyd3566 Lol 😂
@@siggylloyd3566 Leno is for normies who think ranch dressing is just too darn spicy
Classic. "Let's just give them the address..." lol 😅😅😅
Letterman's ex Merrill Markoe still lives in the same house in Malibu; they were together from 1978 - 1988; she bought the property with Letterman, October 04, 1979 for $297,500; what the internet reveals.. 😁
Norm's favourite joke.
❤
Yeah. Norm was funnier though.
Who cares. Astonishingly overrated.
Who's Norm?
@@cjs7553 Norm Macdonald
Ah, yes! David Letterman & Johnny Carson: The one-two late night punch. You're not going to get anywhere close to this late night duo in a long time. They are truly amazing. Johnny's the best, Dave is right behind him, Steve Allen & Jack Paar are behind them even though they were the original late night talk show hosts, and Tom Snyder was the first guy to do a late night talk show after The Tonight Show. Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson, Arsenio Hall, and Conan O'Brien all came pretty close, but Johnny and Dave will never be topped. Not even Jon Stewart can top Johnny & Dave. Nobody can top them!
Jay Leno
@@juniorjohnson5961 Jay has a great work ethic and things like that, and he is also pretty funny, but he has only been on for 22 years.
No you’ll never see a late night duo like this again because late night tv is now a completely irrelevant relic of a bygone era
@@katjoe1974 You make a good point. These days, late night talk shows rely too heavily on politics and political commentaries. That's not what late night TV is all about. Someone needs to reinvent the late night talk show format.
@@KungEMuller no it’s not the politics- nobody watches network tv anymore
The two together are double the laughs. Great guests are rare these days.
Not the last we'd hear of Dave's red pickup.....
3:37. The jinx tells you that they’ve both done a fare share of interviews
Love it! NBC couldn't fire them both for calling their employer cheap!
They were at different networks
They were at different networks
Originally they were both on NBC after 7 or 8 years David jumped to CBS.
These guys were incredible. Unfortunately, we will never see this again on late night TV. End of an era and I'm glad I grew up with it. Johnny, "it's a keepsake." 🤣
When Norm Macdonald made his final appearance on Letterman, he told the garbage-truck joke in honor of Dave.
Upload Jimmy Stewart and his poem about his Dog. From humor to tears. Even Johnny couldn't hold back. MY FAVORITE CARSON MOMENT!
It's already here and is occasionally reposted: ua-cam.com/video/mwGnCIdHQH0/v-deo.html
Ohhhh, I think I remember that now. Wasn’t the dog’s name “Bo” /“Beau” ?😢
You can’t help but feel nostalgic listening to these two. I loved watching Dave and Here’s Johnny and that smile and with Dave he’s so full of Wit you never know what he’s going to say.
I never seen this episode until now it got me thinking of how great it was to be a part of the greatest era of television.
I love the no beard Letterman.
Here Dave tells the same garbage truck joke that Norm MacDonald told in Dave's honor, on Norm's last Late Show appearance!
Anything Johnny is great!
That goofy little pillow would probably fetch big money on eBay these days.
You may have your favorite professional performers and comedians. But your favorite professional performers and comedian’s favorite most admired role model and inspiration is these two. Think about that
I notice that when Letterman was on Carson's show, Johnny would lose his nervousness and twitches. He was just having fun. Letterman was not just the guest, and Carson was not just the host. They were a team, making comedy together. Johnny didn't have to work on those nights. He could just relax and enjoy doing what he enjoyed the most: creating comedy.
Dave took too many shots at GE and corporate to take over for Johnny, but respected the man and would have been a good successor.
Having watched Both growing up. And reminding everyone there was only 4 channels... DAVID was after CARSON. And early on...very..very Funny. He got very cynical by the end. However...for years these two ruled late nights. Merv Griffin is there reference. A name few remember. His Top 10 lists were topical. Paul was oddly funny. The other programs? Monty Python. Midnight Special. Sha-na-na. Benny Hill. Second city television. Thanks for THIS moment in TIME!
4 channels - so NBC, ABC, CBS and PBS right back in 1985 when this aired? What a different era of television. An era that is now gone forever.
Send us some Sammy Davis, please.
Dave should of gotten the Tonite show after Johnny retired. I never did think Leno was talk show host worthy. He was a funny guy,but not someone to host every night. Wish Dave would show up once and while and maybe do a show again.
I hated Leno I haven't watched the show since.
3:33 talkshow synchronicity
RIP😢
Please upload the July 25 1990 episode with Michael Oliver from problem child1&2😁

Appreciate this. I wonder if you can find the segment where Letterman tells the story of the Chicken Diablo? He is telling about his flight west from New York. Thank you in advance. (ps: not sure but it might be the same one as when Johnny brings it old red pick up truck on stage)
Dave's video (today) showed that Johnny use to fax over jokes to Dave's show... it was great to see how they really got along.
The night before Johnny died, both of them and their wives spent the evening on Johnny's boat cruising the water and having dinner.
Dave always gives credit to his own success to Johnny. Rare is is a successor gives their mentor credit, or appropriate gratitude.
The year my twins were born. 😊
Why is there a line break in the middle of “Neighbors”
I think what Dave is saying there without saying it is.. Are they trying to say I got my job because Johnny's my dad? If so, that's insulting. But if it's, oh, you guys share some aesthetic qualities.. then that's a compliment surely
Dave and Johnny orally anointing each other.
The successor that wasn't to be...
Dave before Jeff
People forget that show was not great just because of carson but also because of celebrities at that time they were poised , calm and interesting and had earned their position nowadays people just become famous because of online trends, mocking each other, telling lies, associating with labels and big companies, changing genders etc. They do not have a nice personality bit just a mask of lies .

76 años.
Hey Johnny, upload a video about your final show.
Johnny has left the planet.

I'm looking for a Ukraine girl .
dave's not funny outside of his show ... Leno was the correct choice to carry the torch after Johnny
Why ?
3:37 this is scary actually, they gotta be related somehow
Absolute legends. Too bad their legacies ended with Craig Ferguson/ Conan. These days late night tv is peppered with humorless/ talentless political hacks.
Because they make fun of Trump?
@@bradwiehn499 because they are woke.
@@bradwiehn499 yea, on a nightly basis especially 3 years removed from his being in office is pathetic. Especially since there’s a legitimate retard in the White House right now. Both Carson and Letterman were classic democrats, but they didn’t let their political biases rule their shows nightly. Carson especially was great at making fun of both sides. These nights all you get is nonstop pandering
@@PeterG1975 The definition of woke keeps changing like a person changing clothes. You might want to be more specific.
@@TheEman590 current Hollywood celebrity idealism and politics as a practical example.
I miss these two. There are no good late night shows anymore. It's all left wing political BS!!! It sucks arse!!!
