Hey guys, I still remember you from Wasbe conference in Prague! It was such an honour to play with you together our czech and american anthem! And then, the meeting with you in Lion Court restaurant at Prague Castle! I still have a badge given to me by your security guy with J.P Sousa and Semper Fidels writing! Thank you so much, it is such a great memory.
Having played this back in 1970 at Long Beach State, it is awesome to see and hear Col. Fettig and his Marine Band wizards peel the layers to let us mine into the inner parts and get a better understanding and appreciation for Husa's genius. Thank you!!
This is awesome and brings back many great memories. In 1977, while I was in college as a music major (percussionist) I had the opportunity to rehearse and play Music for Prague under the direction of Karel Husa. He was at our school for 2 weeks under our composer/conductor in residence program. We did an entire concert with our concert band and orchestra of the music of Karel Husa conducted by Husa. His music is wonderful and challenging for a percussionist. It was an amazing opportunity to truly know what the composer envisioned when he wrote the music. I look forward to hearing your organization play this in full, but also love watching the rehearsals.
I have listened to this piece countless times, since first playing it as 1st chair percussionist in high school,1972....Listened to various Universities, orchestras and symphonic bands perform this difficult and awesome music....Listening to this practice session,is enough for me to judge this as perhaps the best interpretation and performance to date... Would love to hear the entire piece...
We performed this work while I was a student at Susquehanna University - when there was still an Iron Curtain. I look forward to hearing the full recording.
Gosh, this brings back memories for me. I remember playing this piece in a Concert Band in Junior College in the 1960s on timpani drums. Living in Australia now I get homesick hearing the American accent from this conductor
Great to have this and look forward to the recording. Pity that their concert performance this spring was cancelled by COVID. I believe they were playing it in Prague this week; would have loved to see that.
To dissonant for me. I'll pass. If you can't hum or sing the melody I have no interest. Its just an exercise in discipline there is nothing musical about it. Its just so much noise. Its well performed noise I will admit. Its not the bands fault. Its all on the composer.
I would listen to the entirety of the piece and read about what it represents. Once you read the composer’s notes it is easier to understand why Husa wrote the piece the way he did. "It is not as beautiful a music as one always would like to hear. But we cannot always paint flowers, we cannot always speak in poetry about beautiful clouds, there are sometimes we would like to express the fight for freedom." -Karel Husa

Absolutely wonderful playing...I can honestly say I have never heard this level of playing on this piece
I was fortunate enough to have Mr Husa conduct this piece in 1979 with the Virginia All-State Band the one year I made it.

When I was studying at Peabody back in 1970, we played this piece at the Midwest Band Clinic.

Played this as a college freshman in 1991 at Morehead State University! Would love to hear you rehearse the other movements! Love these videos!
I've been waiting for another one of these
Great watching these rehearsals!

I heard Dr. Revelli conduct the University of Michigan Symphony Band perform this piece in May 1971 while on tour in California..what a performance!
Yes....I heard them during that tour at El Camino College.....one of the finest university bands ever.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Prague 1968,
It should be the situation in Ukraine right now. . . .

What a closed-minded way to think about music.
There are melodies later in the work.
It's a magnificent work.
Have fun singing the 16th note melodies to bach violin partitas lol
Try finding a memorable melody while listening to the Rite of Spring. This isn't that bad.
