Probably too late, but maybe one of them died to something? I've seen them basically commit suicide by falling off a roof or something, so maybe you just got really unlucky there.

How do you aim with your rifle without using the scope?

You have to half press your aim button. If you press it too hard, you'll scope in fully. This is also how you do weapon challenges for "shoulder aimed kills"
