What a Thru Hike is Really Like

- This is what a thru hike is really like, from the appalachian trail, to the pacific crest these are my experiences and those that I've seen others go through. Ya'll want to talk about everything that's good and wonderful... but anyone whos done it knows it's not always, and not usually like that.
Filmed on the AT, PCT, International appalachian trail, pinhoti trail, benton mackaye trail, florida trail, pacific northwest trail, uinta highline trail, ocean to lake trail, sheltowee trace trail, and i'm sure others I'm forgetting!
Sometimes there are hard times when you're wet, when the climb is brutal, when your funds are running dry. try and remember that you love doing this, that you chose to do this, the friends you make will be forever, and it will always be a memory you look fondly back upon.
Sure, the vast majority of people who attempt a thru hike quit. Don't let that be you. Prepare as hard as you can, hike with determination, make smart decision for your longevity. This beast of a long distance hike you're taking on, regardless of the trail, is going to throw curveballs at you.
Your ultralight gear and your trail runners are a good start but it's going to take a whole lot of will power. from people quitting within the first hours of their hike, to people quitting with less than 100 miles to go... i've seen it happen!
The bad times are bad, just get through them the best you can and you will be rewarded with the most amazing experience of your life, i can promise that.
Thanks to all the amazing trail angels that have helped me over the years, and all of the amazing gear companies that have made any of this possible. I don't currently have a sponsor but pa'lante packs, enlightened equipment, and zpacks are always at the top of my list when looking for something new. And a big thanks to all of you for watching, I make these videos out of love, and if it weren't for those watching it wouldn't nearly be as fun.
Goodluck on your travels, and always feel free to drop me a line. Hope to meet you all on the trails someday.

I didn't ask to be brought to tears in a Taco Bell drive-thru, but here I am.
Those tacos indeed are good
I’m not crying you are 😭😭😭
Oh my god did they get rid of the spicy potato soft tacos again?😫
The soul of a poet. This is why I watch this channel. Not the vistas, not the gear perspectives. Just for the glimpses into a human heart.
Lol

So true. Jupiter is a poet
PART 6 Post Trail Depression
Either have a plan to keep yourself busy, or you might sell everything you own to do it again. Or you may spiral into a state where you dont know what you've just accomplished but you want to do it again more than anything else, even though you might not be able to. Know yourself, and have a recovery plan for when it's over.
I thought about doing a 'post trail' but thought everyone would leave after the terminus part anyway so it got left out. It'll have to be something they figure out later :)
Haha! Hike your own hike right? It was a beautiful video. Got me caught up in the emotion again.
Thanks for watching, I hope you've enjoyed! If you like this video or any others always feel free to share them. I know a lot of people are preparing for a thru hike this spring and wish you the best of luck
Inspiring, poignant, and so poetic. Truly. Thank you, Jupiter
great video!
I greatly enjoyed this. Thank you.
Fantastic video, Jupiter! I have a question, how do you deal with the post-thru hike blues? I tend to become depressed for months after a thru-hike; knowing it's over and feeling like it went in the blink of an eye, returning to work, etc. I know it sounds dumb but I've stopped planning thru-hikes for years now as I just can't deal with the taxing duality of going between 'real life' and life on the trail, I don't even like thinking about past trips as the bittersweet feeling you mentioned is so intense.
I listened to this while doing my chores after my chores. Lunch was ready by part six and I sat down to watch. I cried at the end for you all. The tears were so lubricating on my fingers
WOW! No one could have said it better. This brought up a lot of emotions. Thank you Jupiter!!!
Thanks for watching and i'm glad you enjoyed!
The motivational speech I'll listen to when in trouble.
absolutely brilliant. I appreciate the ridiculous time it must have taken to find all these great shots. Just beautifully done. Your transformation, the ladies, and the locations. What a life. Thank you for sharing and inspiring.
Hey Neda. Happy to see you are a fan of Jupiter too. He rocks and he walks the walk. He’s so human and personable. You gonna do. Long trail?
@@ApeMan Jupiter is the man! Im into him as probably others are as well, not just for the hiking but the intangibles. I don't know but I expect that he can take a pretty good punch and not even change his expression. Think Cool Hand Luke. I come from a much more "reaction like" past. To me, perusing ultralight backpacking, and wanting to BE LIKE JUPITER is to learn a much more chill existence. Backpacking as you know will punch you in the face. I want to be able to take that punch and walk right through it smiling. I'm getting there.
And to your question. Not likely. Im closer to your age one of the guys in the world who really are happily married. Thats just too much time away. I figure I could die of old age before running out of awesome places to hike just in the sierras. I'll see you there one day
@@nedanother9382 I’m with you on so much Sierra left to explore a week at a time so I will keep an eye out for you. My wife actually wants me around too!
I tell people that I have hiked thousands of miles on UA-cam, thanks to a few channels. But now that I have my gear, reviews are less important to me. Of all of the videos on the subject that I have seen, this is my favorite.
I thru-hiked the Appalachian trail in 2019 and my knees still haven't recovered. I still think it was one of the greatest accomplishments of my life.
This is the best hiking video I have seen yet! Beautifully filmed and explained. I am preparing for my first thru-hike, and if I wasn’t inspired enough already, I am now. Thank you.
PCT 2019 class here. Loved your video Jupiter. I did most of the trail, but had to skip NorCal from Reno up to Washington border, a decision I had to make due to money and time.. anyways... the years passed and somehow the trail keeps calling my name. 2023 will be my second thru hike attempt. 4 year anniversary - once a hiker always a hiker ❤🙏
If a 13-minute video on a skillset I haven't even attempted yet can make me cry, I already know that when (not if) I reach the end of the PCT, I'm going to be a giant puddle of mucus and tears.
These 13 minutes felt like forever.. Inspired me to buy my first backpack. Thank you, Jupiter.
This video just made me realise that I've been dreaming of doing the AT for almost 4 years now.
I... need to do this. I can't put it off any longer. I know its something that I love and I know the odds are not in my favour, but I won't quit... I can't quit, I can't.
4 years is a long time so it sounds like you have some good ammunition ready and probably much more in skills and knowledge! Getting out there is a decision I have never regretted, and i'm sure you'd feel the same
Dont
Out of money? How much does it take? No one says
@@framingvagrant the AT is probably about 6-7 thousand, PCT and CDT are about 10 or so. For gear, food, replacement gear, emergency money, and hostels. You can for sure do it for a lot less, but comfortably and reliably, its thousands
@@daltonparker7792 ya i was seeing the hostels and was wondering... Well of course it costs lol.. damn i just wanna hike town to town and work.. a big time soul journey. Id get to really meet people. But i wonder how hard could it be looking all rough to get a job. For a bit then move on to next town.. has that been done before also?
Underline EVERY WORD! Poems out of my heart. Thanks
This video is a work of art with beautifully evocative prose, imagery, and narration. Thank you, Jupiter.
This video is a piece of art, Jupiter! And so very true, I lived every word of it, although in my kayak. I love your channel.
I gotta try some long kayak trips in the coming years!
@@JupiterHikes Such an honour to get a personal reply from you, thanks! I like to travel in my sea kayak. For 2020 I had a six months solo trip planned, but had to cancel it at the very last moment because of the virus. If I can help you out with any tips or thought, don't hesitate to let me know. You'll find my contact info on www.kayasper.com
This has to be one of my favorite videos I’ve ever seen. This is so well put together. Thank you for this!
Very poetic. Adjectives and stuff. Nice job.
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.” Robert Frost. Jupiter, your kind words of wisdom are much appreciated. I wish you well. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Awesome perspective! Starting the PCT in less than two months, so this is the kind of insight that really helps.
A work of art!!! You have captured in verse and view “every hiker”. Wow. Thank you for this gift. ❤️
Amazing video! Made me relive my thru hikes in my mind and the emotions I felt out there came rushing out. Thanks for the inspiration!
I’ve watched a lot of your videos, and even more videos about thru hiking, but this one really hit home. Sublime piece.
I just got done the ocean to lake trail 2 days ago. It was my first thru-hike. I just moved to Florida and it was great learning a lot from you!
Great stuff! Can’t wait to experience all of this on the AT this year.
That was a beautiful experience to watch and to listen to your video! Thank you so much for this experience shared with all of us that have done thru hiking and the rest of us that have never experienced it.
This was fantastic! So many emotions! I'm hitting the trail in less than 20 days for my first thru hike and this was very inspiring! Thank you for sharing!
One of the best pieces of content I've seen in quite awhile! THANKS!
An absolute masterpiece! Thank you for sharing this
Amazing! Thanks for putting this together!
I'm getting chills. AT 2022. Been a long long time coming. Thank you for sharing.
This is my new favorite of all your videos. You certainly have finely tuned your craft. Thank you Jupiter.
What an outstanding and inspiring video. Thank you for this!
Great video Jupiter!! Enjoyed the way you told the story of the progression of being a thru hiker. It's funny, we're so eager at a certain point to just finish the trail, but then we'll find ourselves soon after, wanting to do it all over again.
You've distilled so many feelings into a moving narrative. Brilliant.
Literally watching this while im at Woods Hole Shelter. 22 degrees 20-30mph. LETS GO BLOOD MTN. LETS GO. Luv the content brother. AT2021.
Dude this was soo good! Well done! Thank you!
Beautiful! Thank you!
I absolutely love this. Beautiful!
Beautifully made, love everything about this video!
Really a beautiful & inspiring video.
Thank you for making it.
You’re never “finally done” hiking! It’s the walk of life and it’s only the living, that can bid you farewell. Keep walking my friends
Such a thought provoking summary of what to expect from someone who has been there time and again. I need to get out there myself soon, and can only hope to gain half the insight into the world of hiking trails you have provided here. Thanks for sharing your wonderful views. Happy trails!
Another work of art, Jupiter!
Saving this for when I do my first thru hike, amazing video ❤️
What an amazing movie! As well as inspiring! Thank you so much!
What a great video. Loved every minute.
Thank you so much for this video, very nicely done!
That gave me goosebumps. Well done!
Your best video ever! Incredible insight and perspective.
Thanks for posting this. My heart is thumping and I AM READY TO FINISH !!
Sensational video. It was amazing that I agreed and related to everything from beginning to end. Thanks for taking the time to share this.
Loved that story. Thanks Jupiter.
Really loved it, poetic and uplifting.
Great video! You painted the picture so well... and I hope to experience this myself one day on a long trail. Thank you
Masterfully put together dude.
The stuff you’re creating is really inspiring, keep up the great work it’s an absolute joy to watch ✌️Ben.
Wow I loved this -
I saved it to watch when motivation wanes on-trail 🥰🏕
Amazing, Jupiter. Incredibly informative and emotionally relatable. Thank you
really enjoyed this. Embarking on my first long trail (PCT) this summer. cant freaking wait.
Thank you, Jup. So many little details about what you said took me right back. You helped me remember what it was like the very day leading up to the monument and your description of the end brought me to tears. An experience I thought impossible to explain, captured so beautifully in this film. Thanks my friend ♥️
Excellent and very inspiring, interesting, informative, and insightful!..."brilliant work!
Beautifully shot, wonderfully told. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely perfect bro! Thanks for making this...
Love the insight on reality!
Absolutely love this. Top class work mate. ❤️🙌🍺
Nice one. Getting excited for the year ahead now. Fantastic video and inspirational words.
That was wonderful
Another absolutely beautiful video. Thank you for sharing yourself.
Thank you Jupiter 👏🏻 Such a beautiful explanation and insight into what it takes to finish a long distance hike🧡
Glad you enjoyed it!
simply incredible video in every aspect
“You will be uncomfortable.” - This is thru hiking.
such a beautiful video. thank you good sir for making this. 🔥 Keep on hiking.
Thanks for describing my life as I know it and am living it right now. I could never quit the hard path and am so grateful when I hear other share the same. Walk on!
Just awesome.
This video and the challenges that you faced apply to life in general; this is a lesson for living with life.
Thanks ❤️
Beautifully written.
About ready to do my first through hike, the CDT and this pops up! A good dose of encouragement as well as butterflies! 😊 Thank You!
Your best video yet. Thank you!
Beautiful and inspiring. After a few minutes in I started the video over to watch with my 11 year old daughter. Hoping she understands why I love hiking so much.
Awesome story! Thank you for sharing and inspiring. Respect to you sir for such an incredible achievement, that’s 1 down, you now have 2 more to go! Cheers from South Africa 🇿🇦
Gosh that was one of the best videos I've watched in a long time.
Oh man I absolutely love that and it’s right on the money with everything you said!
This Video is a glimpse of what it takes to be who you really want from your own self or f that even made sense ... I loved it I literally have been doing everything to prepare my self for a triple crown and more thnx for sharing love your thoughts bro! now you stay safe out there
Great video Jupe! Great storytelling with beautiful shots to compliment
thanks meow meows!
Love that so much!!! What an inspiring video:))
Really enjoyed this. I can’t help but think about fluke medical problems/injuries that stop a lot of hikes, and that success can be anything a person wants it to be. You start out wanting a thru hike, but that might change while you’re out there. Your words/video are truly inspirational for any dream or quest one might be thinking of. 🦉🦅
Dang Jupiter. You did it AGAIN. I am stunned. Magnificent
Saw the awesome video with you and Darwin today and realized I hadn’t checked out any Jupiter stuff lately. This one was pretty great. You guys talked about post hike issues today. Considering all the blood, sweat and tears that go into a thru hike, it’s not at all difficult to imagine. Great work! 👍🏼👍🏼
I came to your channel thru a reply on Reddit r/Prepper thread.. Im excited to see your content. Have a good day.
Hey thanks for the headsup on how you found me! Always interesting seeing where someones coming from as otherwise I really don't know at all
Really well done! Very inspiring
Top video Jupiter! 🙌
Great video, as always. I'm 19 and planning on taking spring quarter off from college either next year or the year after that, and then it's off to the races with the PCT! Jupiter, thank you for your videos and for inspiring people to get out there.
So well done. Wonderful. Inspiring. Best hiking video I’ve seen so far. I hit that “subscribe” button really quickly.
Beautiful!!!!
Amazing!!! Thank you.
Great video and delightful commentary. Thank you!
Wow. This one caught me off guard. You seem like such an unassuming guy. I didn't expect something this deep and finely put together as what you have created here. Well done. It was super enjoyable.
Beautiful mate. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful! ♥️
This was beautiful!!!
