I just binge watched Bobby Fingers on Tom's recommendation, and I think he might actually be the best visual artists on UA-cam right now. His Bezos row boat is one of the greatest rollercoasters of a video I've seen ever, truly a masterpiece of poetry, music, craft, acting, and comedy.
The way the "dump" button worked back when I worked on live call-in TV shows was that the show was always on a 5 second delay, but the button controlled the audio going out over the air. If a caller said something obscene, the sound guy had 5 seconds to hit the button and keep it down until the broadcast would be past the point of the call being dropped. The sound guy and call screener had to be listening intently the entire time and the host would do his best to keep a straight face, knowing that the viewers would only see him and hear the audio drop out for a few seconds and probably never know what actually happened. In my years of audio production for live TV, I think I only used that button once.

Making your home a safe place for your kids to talk about what they're consuming without fear of judgement is good (strict parents run the risk of raising good liars). Also - and this is a big one - I think it's becoming more and more important to start teaching kids media literacy from as young as age as possible. Keep it age appropriate; start out with underscoring the difference between what's real and what's pretend (this is not a new concept; it's literally a developmental milestone). Move on to explaining how so much of what's out there, from fairy tales to TV shows to movies to UA-cam to TikTok, is designed to keep you interested and entertained, so a lot of it is made up or exaggerated - sometimes people act really rude or silly or do dangerous things to make people laugh or scare them. But it's not okay to do those things in real life because you could upset someone, or get hurt. There are lots of good resources out there for teaching kids these things. Being a Canadian of a certain age, I still remember our beloved House Hippos psa as an early example of this. Go look it up, I'm sure it's on UA-cam somewhere. The thing with adding the music in the end credits was originally a workaround for creators to still get money even if the content was maliciously flagged for a copyright claim that wasn't actually owned by the artist. You can see this in action within ymfah's "How to Break UA-cam (Copyright Claim your own video)" from 3 years ago. It explains the situation in some detail.
49:40 I think the main thing with extremely long form content is that people put it on in the background while they do something like cleaning or work or (as a student) homework, etc. they listen to them when they're doing things that take a long time and they want some form of background noise. I know I do that when I'm doing the 'tedious' parts of survival or RPG games (grinding levels, gathering heaps of materials for in-game projects or crafting recipes, etc. where I'm just doing mundane tasks)
I desperately hope that Tom Scott and the crew actually went out and made a video on that Tesla Truck idea. I've also been waiting for something like that battlebots vs ballistic gel dummy idea for a long time
16:00 I imagine this like a messed up version of taskmaster. Sort of a combination of taskmaster and scrapheap challenge where you have people with the skills to build and make something, and Greg Davies demanding horrors from them.
If I had a nickel every time a group of people all wore red shirts to mess with Tom, I'd have 3 nickels, which isn't alot but it's weird it happened thrice.
35:30 My generation (just turning 22) didn't get terrifying PSAs. We had a sort of interactive theatre that simulated things like train tracks, a dark alleyway, one of those green electrical boxes with the fence around them, and put the fear of death into us in an immersive fashion.
Happy to see Tom back on. btw, personally for me, < 30 minutes watched in 1 sitting, > 50 I will usually watch in 2-3 sittings, if it's an interesting video (like this one actually!). < 10 minutes, I can easily binge 3-6 without really noticing time has passed. I have problems concentrating anyway... But ye short format is easier to binge for sure, but longer formats feel more fulfilling once you fully watch them through.
Love bobby fingers mention, he is a famous Irish musician/ tv personality/ comedian . I guess look up the rubber bandits. But people don't think comedy is art so they didn't get as much credit as they deserve especially on irish tv and how our national broadcaster treated them
I think I was among the first 20k subscribers- certainly subscribed after his first video. It's the only time I've ever gotten onboard early in my life.
Bobby Fingers is so underrated. I have not laughed so hard in recent memory, and have not had my expectations so subverted, as when I was watching Bobby Fingers. It's a MUST watch.
a english public service announcement I remember, a child who was trying to get a ball off the top of a transformer station was trying to get a ball then just died. Thanks Tom for reminding me of those awful announcements
A little tip on the "toy that never gets boring" problem: create interest through scarcity. Don't give them access to all the toys all the time. If you buy a new thing, put an old thing they aren't currently playing with away for a bit. Rotate the options. This works very well for toddlers.
I really like this "more loose" Tom, and hoping they do/did the Tesla truck idea... Something I would love to see also is gameshow(s) in Tom Scott style and in Safety third style, between the two crews (technical difficulties vs Safety third) - would require another judge than Tom though...
If Tom wants to know more about the button that deletes the last 10 seconds of live shows, he should speak to Dan of the H3 podcast. As far as I know they are the first livestream creators on youtube or twitch to use it. They have not one, but two of those buttons. Very expensive stuff.
@elfpi55-bigB0O85 idk about H3H3's button, but a similar one is used in radio to cover sneezes, coughs, and the like. it works by delaying the actual live broadcast by 10 seconds, and if you need to sneeze you press the button, it stops broadcasting, you sneeze, you hit it again to start broadcasting again, and you go about your show, ideally the audience never notices you even paused.
@@elfpi55-bigB0O85 its for when someone accidentally says something like "cunt" that would get the entire 3hr podcast demonetized and age restricted, accidentally showing nudity or something on a screen live, or if one of the crazy characters they live interview says or does something wild. same reason any tv or radio station would use one. it just goes back and deletes 20 seconds after the button press
@@elfpi55-bigB0O85The host has a habit of doxxing himself or saying jokes that can be clipped and used to try to cancel them. So they have an audio button and a video button.
My kid's 1 year or so ahead of Potato. It's so hard, and everything you think you 'learned' you have to keep re-considering, because you suddenly realize, Oh shoot, that's different now. It's constant flux so far. And I am sure I will think that's different eventually too.
What's hilarious, is most podcasts are background noise while I'm driving, but this is one I legit I have to be sitting down to be able to focus on bc it's that good.
One that I came up with that we used to use on the phone when our parents walked in was "air", an acronym for "Adult In Room". I wonder sometimes if our 'rents ever caught on, or wondered why the hell we were always studying the atmosphere and absolutely nothing else. Three-way phone call chains went psycho in the 90s. We'd have like nine people on the line and the first and last people in the chain couldn't hear each other for ish. Ah. Good times with homemade party lines, baebeeeeee
I HIGHLY recommend Bobby Fingers if you haven't watched him. Its weird, I wanna say he's most similar to Captain Disillusion? But really they're worlds apart, but they have a similar "Total artistic integrity over every aspect of the production" thing going on.
Ive thought about the dump button idea for too long as well, usually it works by slowing down the feed by 1-2% and building up the buffer. Though as Tom said you'd need to have a local buffer before sending it to encode.
Fun fact--Ann Reardon (How to Cook That) included Nigel's "chemically pure" cookie experiment in one of her debunking/explanatory videos. Highly recommend.
I'm at the stage where my oldest is wanting to do more with the internet and we are giving small amounts of freedom here and there and teaching along the way and having consequences(losing tech time etc) if the rules we have in place are violated. It's a balance between letting her learn what is good and what isn't while she's safe at home, and just wanting to not let her have access to things because of how much junk is out there.
For the topic at like 52:00, The h3 Podcast has that. Where he pushes a big red button (and a yellow button at the same time, video and audio), and it goes to a waiting screen for 20 seconds or whatever they had set it to (so as it can recoup that buffer back for future button presses), and then the show resumes after some fun waiting-screen stuff plays. They press it all the damn time lol. Tom said 10k, but I believe theirs was 20 thousand dollars lol.
43:37 Not only that, but no matter how you try to limit your kid, there will always be other kids with less restrictions that will show your kids things that will be out of your control
For any Irish viewers like myself who never heard of Bobby Fingers, you won't believe me when I say this but Bobby is actually Mr Chrome from The Rubberbandits! I was already blown away by his Jacko diorama to begin with but when I learned this it all made so much sense For context for everyone else, The Rubberbandits were a comedy music duo who wore plastic bags on their heads and had the country in a vice grips for years, since then the other lad, Blindboy Boatclub runs a brilliant podcast about just about anything. I'd always wondered where Mr Chrome had disappeared to

@@aarontheperson6867 He's "retired" from doing weekly videos like he has for the past decade. He still has other shows, podcasts, on other channels, and if he hits on a really neat idea he might make another video. Lateral, Technical Difficulties, for example
He'll be back soon.
I love that Tom Scott is promoting Bobby Fingers. It gives me hope that one day he'll come to Limerick and do a video on Chicken Hut.
Another one with Tom Scott, thats awesome!
I can't believe Tom Scott is back on the podcast! Great episode!
As someone who’s super weird about keeping my private life private, I can only aspire to be as slippery as Tom 😌
So, do you have a pet, and what is it's name? ^_~
@@pmsavenger 🙊
49:40 I think the main thing with extremely long form content is that people put it on in the background while they do something like cleaning or work or (as a student) homework, etc. they listen to them when they're doing things that take a long time and they want some form of background noise. I know I do that when I'm doing the 'tedious' parts of survival or RPG games (grinding levels, gathering heaps of materials for in-game projects or crafting recipes, etc. where I'm just doing mundane tasks)
One of the few podcasts I like to tune in, today with my favourite guy from youtube.
I desperately hope that Tom Scott and the crew actually went out and made a video on that Tesla Truck idea. I've also been waiting for something like that battlebots vs ballistic gel dummy idea for a long time
kevin unsheathing his red t-shirt on cue killed me 💀
16:00 I imagine this like a messed up version of taskmaster. Sort of a combination of taskmaster and scrapheap challenge where you have people with the skills to build and make something, and Greg Davies demanding horrors from them.
BOBBY FINGERS!!!
you all need to watch bobby fingers. The man cant miss.
If I had a nickel every time a group of people all wore red shirts to mess with Tom, I'd have 3 nickels, which isn't alot but it's weird it happened thrice.
I started this pod when I was driving in my car, finished it at my computer, this was a great podcast to listen to in the car
When they brought up underrated youtube channels i immediately thought of bobby fingers!
Tom Scott is based
I love how they tagged a random comedy channel that hasn't uploaded in 14 years instead of kevin by accident
35:30 My generation (just turning 22) didn't get terrifying PSAs. We had a sort of interactive theatre that simulated things like train tracks, a dark alleyway, one of those green electrical boxes with the fence around them, and put the fear of death into us in an immersive fashion.
one of the best guests on this pod, should be a mainstay😂
Love the AlphaPhoenix callout. There's more awesome videos there now, love that channel.
But people don't think comedy is art so they didn't get as much credit as they deserve especially on irish tv and how our national broadcaster treated them
ive discovered him recently and it's one of the best people ive discoverd on youtube
I think I was among the first 20k subscribers- certainly subscribed after his first video. It's the only time I've ever gotten onboard early in my life.
Genuinely one of the best podcast combinations.
I was listening to this while driving on CA-91 West, 72 mph
Bobby Fingers is so underrated. I have not laughed so hard in recent memory, and have not had my expectations so subverted, as when I was watching Bobby Fingers. It's a MUST watch.
love the callout for Bobby Fingers, gotta be one of the absolute best longform youtube channels out there currently
The bezos boat video was actually an art peice worthy of framing
a english public service announcement I remember, a child who was trying to get a ball off the top of a transformer station was trying to get a ball then just died. Thanks Tom for reminding me of those awful announcements
Just to scare you safety third is one of the only long form videos that i focus on and sit down to watch
A little tip on the "toy that never gets boring" problem: create interest through scarcity.
Don't give them access to all the toys all the time. If you buy a new thing, put an old thing they aren't currently playing with away for a bit. Rotate the options.
This works very well for toddlers.
when Tom comes it becomes his podcast
He is back!!!, best guest ever
I really like this "more loose" Tom, and hoping they do/did the Tesla truck idea... Something I would love to see also is gameshow(s) in Tom Scott style and in Safety third style, between the two crews (technical difficulties vs Safety third) - would require another judge than Tom though...
This is my sleep noise, thanks for all y'all do
as a Slough resident born and bred I thank Tom for the greatest meme I own that I send to family any time my train arrives at Burnham station
I’m shocked he’s back but oh my gosh I’m so happy 😅
Lateral is an absolute delight to listen to
If Tom wants to know more about the button that deletes the last 10 seconds of live shows, he should speak to Dan of the H3 podcast. As far as I know they are the first livestream creators on youtube or twitch to use it. They have not one, but two of those buttons. Very expensive stuff.
why would you ever need such a stupid button lmao
British and Canadian service announcements both, scarring kids.for life, lol.
definitely love alpha phoenix! his speed and behaviors of electricity vids are so awesome!
My kid's 1 year or so ahead of Potato. It's so hard, and everything you think you 'learned' you have to keep re-considering, because you suddenly realize, Oh shoot, that's different now. It's constant flux so far. And I am sure I will think that's different eventually too.
Big “STRIKE ME DOWN ZEUS” energy at the end
I force my nieces to watch Ann rearden all the time. Usually after they want to do something they’ve seen on 5 minutes crafts.
This does have backyard bbq dad vibes but it was also a very fun and chill time 😊 glad you got tom back this is a good gang for a podcast
Tom came back, after the first visit? That's awesome.
Dude i just found tyler bell and now he is one of my favorite channels
I am currently on the freeway going 25 mph. Got to love that afternoon traffic
Also sad that he had no idea how a real cookie was supposed to look like. 😂 but that’s why we love him.
5:20 h3podcast has the dump button and he’s literally used it to stop his credit card from being shown lol
I love how they talk about the "dump" button that H3H3 had to install without realizing or intentionally not referencing them
Yay!! UA-camr recommendations from creators whose work I love 💕
FYI, H3 podcast has the 30 sec pause of content in case of untransmissable content of you wanted to investigate how they've implemented it
From Spotify:
This is one of the podcasts I listened to on my drive to work. I typically go between 55-65MPH when on the parkway.
Tom Scott was so traumatized that he left UA-cam
I'd love to see Tom become a maker content creator
Tom doesn't know that the H3 Podcast has already implemented the button that erases the last 20 seconds of the stream.
And it’s honestly the funniest part of the show- the abrupt cut to the “we’ll be right back” screen kills me
I love that you're already thinking about when to expose your child to UA-cam. This is my specialty and an area I've written about for years.
I was already blown away by his Jacko diorama to begin with but when I learned this it all made so much sense
For context for everyone else, The Rubberbandits were a comedy music duo who wore plastic bags on their heads and had the country in a vice grips for years, since then the other lad, Blindboy Boatclub runs a brilliant podcast about just about anything. I'd always wondered where Mr Chrome had disappeared to
Well that was fantastic. Just cuz they were wondering I treat hours long videos as podcasts and just listen or watch while I do my boring work from home job.
I can't believe you managed to get him back a second time after the first
My favorite podcast to watch going 67mph down a freeway
