- Mountain Rescue Aspen and the HAATS Unit from the Colorado National Guard work together to evacuate a man who had fallen on North Maroon Peak with a Blackhawk.
September 21, 2013
For more information please contact Mountain Rescue Aspen directly via www.mountainrescueaspen.org
My pops was the man helping load the people into that chopper; he had the pleasure of working with the Mountain Rescue Aspen crew for about 30 years before he was whisked off this planet a few years ago in a tragic avalanche accident. I remember how he mentioned that he helped lift these people in despite having a few cracked ribs himself hahaha... He was a hero and I am going to miss him till the day I inevitably join him. Here’s to all the brave people out there willing to risk their necks saving and recovering other people who have stumbled into trouble on these treacherous mountains! May we all be capable of learning from their compassion. And thank you for uploading this video, it's a great way to help remember the man that he was.
Johnny was the best of the best. He is sorely missed.
A lot of people rescued by him will miss him once they know he is no more.
All due respect to him.
Amen
Your Dad is a hero, no doubt
Damn, I can't even fly that well in a video game. That pilot has skills that pay the bills.
In which video games are you trying to do that?
@@Quantum-Bullet GTA V?
BF4
it's harder if in game (if you had a sim setup) you can't feel the helicopter compared to real life
not trying to take away from the pilot, he's insane
sure as shit isnt making bank from the Colorado National Guard
I live In Eagle County, Colorado, where these Blackhawk pilots are based (HAATS). The men flying these UH-60s and CH-47s train other pilots to fly these types of missions. You can rest assured that if you get into a bad situation on a climb, or anywhere in the backcountry in CO, you have the best available people coming to save your butt. True unsung heroes. The mountain rescue groups are badass, too!
Thanks for watching.
That was a "hold your breath and be very still" moment. Great flying, and I bet one very relieved pilot.
Oh yeah this great skill ful flying pilot is top p.but try doing this under firing the pucker facter goes way up
Kkvv wsw1
Holy guacamole. Like pulling up to the store. Too smooth.
Just another day for HAATS and MRA. :)

Some beautiful scenery for a rescue.
Pilot maybe part of a team of heroes... but he's also a very lucky pilot indeed to fly around in that natural beauty and save lives.
I believe they would agree with you.
Wow
one wheel 14000 feet edge of a mountain 2 minutes
most people can't park between the lines at the grocery store
unbelievable job
great to know the man rescued is ok
thank you to HAATS for your commitment to keep us all safe
right on man, I cant believe we do this stuff, I always love working with you guys.......definitely pros!
I bet those rotors were like “Christ, give me air” at that altitude lol.
Yup
Jesus spin my rotors XD
Wym
@@ItsEpicXD rotors need air to spin. Thin mountain = bad for rotor
Aspen elevation is about 8000ft. This is easy peasy height for a blackhawk which can go easily double that height with leftovers.
Hi Darryl! First off, a huge Thank You. Please pass that along to your other crew members. You guys are The Best.
I did not get any video from the second landing. I was a bit busy handing you poles and packs. I shot some from inside, but none of it came out at all. I'll blame that on my un-familiarity with the new iOS7 on my phone. Next time I'll have it dialed.
Yo... This comment is 7 years ago
The video is 5 years ago....
Wtf
this had me fucked up but the video must have been private/unlisted for 2 years
Happy New Year

extremely amazing ! very good pilot skills !
respect for the pilot !
Those pilots that have to rescue those people deserve all RESPECT in the world for flying that close is AWESOME!!! I climbed that peak and it has many areas you need to pay attention because of the exposure!! We are lucky to have rescue services that included helicopters and pilots that can fly like that !! 🚁🥰!!
All true
Great job capturing the awesome skill of the pilots and the hard work of the rescue crews. What a view when the UH-60 flies away!
so lucky we live in a country that rescues people like this
Very true
WOW! I saw the thumbnail and thought this HAD TO BE photoshopped.
This is friggin' amazing!
Those HAATS guys are friggin' amazing
Yah HAATS guys! I went to that school January of 2012. CW4 Ballard was my instructor pilot. Those pilots are quite good at what they do and are the best in the army to handle those high altitude approaches and landings.
This is the most inspirational thing I have seen in ages. Especially the comments on this page. I live and work in Aspen. I have such an incredible peace of mind knowing there are amazing people like this to rescue me if I am ever in danger. I have shared this video to my friends and family in Georgia. Everyone is in complete awe.
Freakin awesome helicopter flying there.
That was some excellent excellent flying
Heros..... Thanks for all you do up there..
MRA and HAATS are awesome. Keep up the incredible work.
Awesome flying :)
That was some damn good flying...similar to what they do in Afghanistan on the regular with the mountains. I would not be surprised if these pilots had similar experiences in combat prior to this effort. I am a fellow Guardsman and highly impressed...GO GUARD!!!
Nice work guys. That takes skill and bravery. Much respect.
Amazing pilot skills. Surgical flying! There really are those born to fly, and this pikot certainly is one of them.
Thanks for watching
This is one of the reasons why I always carry flagging, whether I'm in service or not. Basic helicopter ground training is something I should work up in a one-hour presentation.
You got a link to this?
I always feel a sense of comradery watching people help an injured person into a helicopter
Thanks for watching
Respect .. hats off to the Rescuers and specifically the Pilot.
Thanks for watching
Excellent teamwork of the guy looking out of the window and the pilot.
Their teamwork is amazing for sure.
Skilled as always, hats off to fellow Colorado guardsmen.
Unsang heroes... 👍
Wow. Well done, and thanks for your service.
My father is the commander of HAATS right now. It’s nice to know that this film has still lasted this long and it’s quite the eyesight to see how close you guys have to get near rocks and dangers to rescue someone else! Props to you guys!
Nice!
Absolutely professional work. And, by the way, balls of iron. Congrats!
I agree. Thanks for watching.
Hats off to the pilot. So good at what he's doing.
Yes he is!
Man America you have the coolest looking helicopters. Pretty sure the chinook, black hawk and apache are my favorite machines on this planet! Sadly i'll never get to learn to fly one haha. Thx for the great video
Thanks for watching
Hats off to the crew and skilled pilot
Amazing how still that aircraft remains, especially when you consider the unpredictable air currents in a mountainous environment.
Thanks for watching
That was amazing. Hats off to the rescuers, in chopper and out. I puckered when they stepped into chopper.
We did too.
@@JohnTYoung kind of grin to hear that, and I'm glad you have caution in those situations but can get through it. I'm a pilot but I have fear of heights when on the ground-which doesn't make sense to me and I have admiration for those who can overcome it. I pictured a sheer drop of 1500 feet on the other side of the rock they were stepping on.
Excelente pilot....!!!!
One of my favorite maroon bells Blackhawk rescue vids 😂😅
Please Lord never let me be that guy.
Amazing what our Mountain Rescue team accomplishes
That is what our mission in Afghanistan has produced pilots with balls the size of bowling balls. Awesome skills.
Devildog 68 US Army 11B 4life bro and I second what you said
Awesome, just awesome.m
Hell yeah
You don’t need wars to produce great pilots. What bs.
@@neurobook Touche, you don't, but you can also find a great wealth of knowledge and special abilities from those who have flown combat missions.
Killer Vid bro, do you have any from the second landing? I was the guy calling that landing in! I always get nervous anytime they say we're going to The Bells......by the way, great work up there!
There are situations where you can’t fake skill, it just shines through.
Pretty certain the stick with the streamer is to show the pilots wind direction similar to a wind sock at an airport or when we pop smoke to show them the landing zone.
brownc72 yes you are right about that. Improvised wind sock but it does the job
That was fking amazing. to bring a helicopter in with the slope on one side, and touch one wheel, so rock steady. great pilot and spotter. awesome!
Yes they are!
Beautiful work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Пилот просто красавец! Уровень мастерства просто зашкаливает! Честь и хвала!
Thanks for watching
Thanks to the pilot, this was uploaded on UA-cam, not LiveLeak.
Yup
SAR and HATTS, you guys are great.. good to see the guy climbed into the H60 rather than being hoisted
Why did he need to be rescued? Looked like he was moving just fine.
I love the Blackhawk, it's so stable. 🙂👍
Like a rock.
This is so beautiful
Thanks for watching
That was impressive. I'm surprised they didn't drop a basket for the rescue .Without the skills and bravery of these people you would certainly die if you were injured up there
D Redbud depends on the extent of the injury, the weather, your own preparedness and will to live. Not taking anything from the pilots though, that’s some impressive stick work
Thats some great piloting skills
Absolutely insane flying skills! That pilot has got brass balls "I hope those people were worth it '
Always. Thanks for watching
Pilot is incredible, with big eggs.
Yes, they all do.
If The Pilot Just.... sneeze :O Nice skills
Superb flying skill. One gust of wind and it could have been over for the helicopter crew.
Thanks for watching!
good job,素晴らしいパイロットですね。
So the guy with the stick & the pink streamer is there to guard the rotor from striking the rocks? I was surprised the rescued person was not on belay in any way? Those are the procedures? Great job.
Hardie Johnson improvised wind sock is what it was
I hope they make a 3 hour movie about this
Ya!
Вертолетчик высокого класса!!!!Лайк!!!! В СССР ,а ныне в России есть не хуже! В горах Афганистана и Кавказа наши вертолетчики не хуже трюки выделывали!!!!Да и вертолетчики МЧС не отстают ....
Thanks for watching
So tense and worried the entire time I watched the video. Not sure if it’s common to recover someone from the edge of a mountain without a basket or rope to hold onto. That is really impressive even without knowing the full extreme of the difficulty.
I saw Chinook do a rescue. Pilot laid the tail of the heli, ramp down in the show the front hovering over several hundred foot on this very steep snowy mountain. He backed that sucker up to that steep mountain like a pickup truck and spent,, what seemed like forever hovering there picking up everyone. Thank you Afghanistan War. Produced some very good pilots.
We have access to Chinooks but the rotor wash is so off the charts that we rarely use it. Plus it's hoist is through a tiny hatch in the floor. But it sure is nice when you need to bus some people in.
Профессионально отработали. Красавцы. Всем чистого неба над головой!
Thanks for watching
May i ask why didn't they have the backpacks on they're backs? They do realize that every second the waste F'ing around, the greater the chance of something really terrible happening to everyone?
They should have. They took them of during the long wait for the Blackhawk.
Beautiful one wheel, guys.
Absolutely mind blowing.
Thanks for watching
That's some serious skill on display! I'll be t that pilot flew in the Air Force 160th SOAR. They are Tier One.
HAATS are the their teachers.
How can the helicopter maintain this altitude, with the pilots heavy balls on board?!
Thanks for watching!
Either require people to sign a waiver to be rescued OR once rescued send them a bill for the entire cost and go after them until it's paid in FULL!
Thanks for watching
Pilot is a gem 👏
Amazing flying skills
I agree
Man that pilot has great skills 😳
Ya!
Is this on the planet where we are now?
Yes. But higher.
Thanks for watching
Helicopters are really Awesome!
I think so too.
Amazing pilot skills.
I agree
He didn't look like he had fallen?
Great work 👍🙏
Thanks for watching.
One wheels are pretty routine for inland rescue, probably a pretty easily mission for this crew.
A walk in the park.
Routine extraction with Las Vegas Metro Police Search and Rescue Team and its rotary wing pilots working the mountains surrounding Las Vegas on at least a once a month basis. I always carried a pruning saw so I could cut away tree branches to make a LZ large enough for blades to clear. Occasionally lowered on cable because of tree density and extracted the same way.
No trees to prune at 14000 feet. No air either.
How much would it cost me to get airlifted out? I do quite a bit of rock climbing and hiking. I should probably get health insurance as well.
Mountain Rescue Aspen never charges for rescues.
Just trying to learn the procedures here, Hans Jung, sorry you sat on a sharp pointy object the other day.
That's wild, can't imagine the bill for something like that
Thanks for watching
Wait top scrolling... i bet the alg brought us here. do you flight sim by chance as well, friend?
Nope.
el mejor helicoptero del mundo par multitareas, exelente en Colombia hay muchos BLACK HAWK
Thanks for watching
Great pilot
Yes they are.
Awesome pilots with awesome skills
Yup. They're the best.
@@JohnTYoung indeed
Amazing staff!
Ya it is.
Do climbers eventually have to pay for rescue, after intentionally putting themselves in dangerous situations for the purpose of recreation?
Never.
great pilot!
Well done !
Thank you 😎
Thanks for watching
Thin air and high winds. That's tough and I am not sure how many other helicopters in the world could have accomplished this.
Thanks for watching
I assume those that were left behind were other search and rescuers.
Yes, they were. And the Blackhawk came back for us in the same spot.
@@JohnTYoung Ah, interesting. I thought y'all had to hike back down.
@@georgehill3087 We often do, and there is no guarantee of a pickup, but the crew had so much fun making that one wheel they wanted to do it again.
Please accept my respect !
Thanks for watching
Do they have to pay for the rescue?
Never.
Amazing control..

GET TO THE CHOPPA
