It was so much fun being part of Kumu Mark's halau during the making of Lilo and Stitch. We got to see the first rushes with pencil drawings of our wahine dancers. Our Kumu lit up making this. He told us to watch for special dedication to the Hawaiian Kingdom. Turned out that for the opening credits he did a traditional chant paying homage to QueennLiliuokalani and then this dance/chant which was honoring King Kalakaua. The Hawaiians were very happy. You may not get it, but Hawaiians did. As a former Disney fan, I loved the watercolor backgrounds for North Shore. Just beautiful.
This is how you honor a culture, through observation and interpretation. Not this forced down-your-throat virtue signaling we see in today’s media. Thank you for these movies!
What sucks is I feel like this research doesn’t go into Disney movies anymore. Like if you see the classics and how they’re done, it may be old fashioned but they were out in the field wherever they need to be to get the information they needed. They brought real people to be a part of the films and I think that’s so lost in technology now.
Hey I dunno if my memory serves me right but I remebered reading an article or watching a vid (i forgot it was long ago) about animators of Frozen traveling to a place and researching ice structures and ice crystals in nature and applied it on how Elsa's ice would reflect/refract light when subjected to lightsource. I think that's a point for them having field research 🙃🙃🙃
I mean, now you have Coco and Frozen 2 where there was definitely research put into Mexican and Saami culture. Nice to see them putting the effort in after the lackluster live actions.
Wow. This part of the movie never ceases to amaze me, and now I undestand why. It was beautifully done. This making of video almost made me cry of emotion. Great job, everyone who worked on it.
I am transfixed by this. I could watch it for hours. It is so beautiful and graceful, I would give anything to see it in person. Not even this specific song or dance; any hula. I honestly can't even find the words to describe how amazed I am.
The song is the closest thing to the Hawaiian national anthem. It's a song praising their last queen Liliuokalani, calling her the rightful ruler of the islands, and praising her brother, calling him the flower that never fades in the sun. The american businessmen stormed the palace and arrested the queen, forcing her to abdicate by threatening to kill her people and citizens. Then they appointed themselves to govern the islands, giving themselves all the land and power. They did this because the Queen was allowing the natives to vote, and limiting the americans ability to buy land and import chinese workers. Every time you buy a Dole product, you are supporting the company who raped Hawaii.
@@alienjesus796 She also limited the christian missionaries powers, and brought back the traditional songs and dances, especially the hula dance, which the missionaries had forbidden as evil. She was called the "merry monarch" and the annual hula contest is held in her honor.

Disney's Animated Feature Lilo & Stitch Celebrates the Intricate Hawaiian Dance of the Hula Now Here's Your Chance to Learn This Ancient Art From Hula Master Mark Cayley Polamalu
As much I LOVE Lilo and Stitch, I kind of hope they don’t make a live action movie. If they do, they better make it THE BEST version. Because there’s so many remakes now that alter soooo many things because of today’s society (people taking offense for small things here and there) and seeing my favorite movie get remade makes me nervous.
lilo and stitch is fairly new so Disney doesn't need to remake this movie to renew their copyright claim. gotta wait for 50 years to pass since the release first.
There aren’t exact steps. You need to create your own based on the words of the song. Individual Halau (school of hula) will have different interpretation of the mele (song). In this movie, those movements belong to Kumu (teacher) Mark Ho’omalu. His studio is located in Oakland and the name of his halau The Academy of Hawaiian Arts.
Sorry ... GOOD OLD Disney movies are gone, and I miss them Next *Lile and Stichte* will be of an alien with non-binary gender fluid trans self perception.
they still cared a lot about the details in the dance. they tried to be as respectful as possible, that minor part they missed shouldn’t affect the product too much.
Oh man, I seriously miss 2D animated Disney movies
THIS THIS THIS
So do the unemployed 2D animators.
Me too
YES. Someone finally put it into words for me!

The fact that they actually put the drummers in respect
It is so cute watching the real hula dancers and their animated version.😆

Like Mulan is a perfect example. But who cares about Chinese culture anyways.

that went, now not so much or at all
@@ioanairimescu6451 My comment is like 2 years old. XD
What's most impresive is that the song was about Liliʻuokalani, she was Hawaii's first queen and last monarch.
Wow! Hawaiian culture not only beautiful, but the it's people are beautiful too!
Two years and still no comments?

Hula is so beautiful. Anyone who dances it looks so comfortably free with the tropical wind with their bodies flowing and whatnot.
Its just so beautiful what they nade with this intro. Its the most beautiful, peaceful y nostálgic for me. So great work they do
This style of movie making needs to return to form, so much attention to detail.

Can someone from practicing hula tell if the people are happy with that part of the movie?
Se nota tanto , el cambio de época. Esta era de Disney fue dorada
Good anolog approach I would add practical effects with stop motion of a TIE fighter
But wait, someone stated that hula is not even done with grass skirts. any clarification with this?
Its not a grass skirt its actually a ti leaf skirt. Some dance with the leaf whole and some with it shredded(looks like long grass)

The times when #Disney used to be creative. Now, it’s just live version of something
What I hate is the didn't even do that for pocahontas... that poor little girls horrible life experience was romanticized..
