  • James is the founder + driving force behind indie rock icons The Shins. With over 20 years in the game, he’s seen just about every facet of the music business - from tiny shows at dives bars to Billboard top 10 albums on major labels - and as you can imagine he’s learned a thing or two along the way.
Getting your career as a creator off the ground is hard. Keeping it on the rails after years or decades is even harder. Being one of the best - someone who breaks through to mainstream success? Orders of magnitude harder than all that. The amazing highs are - inevitably - coupled with difficult lows, and learning how to cope with that dynamic is crucial for the sanity + success of anyone who seeks to build a career around their creative passions- and James is a wealth of knowledge on that topic.
We also get into the nitty gritty of the how + why he created the new app Pasted (spoiler warning: it’s amazing - creates incredibly cool, cut-n-paste style graphics from the photos on your camera roll - it’s currently on the front screen of my phone- download it here: cr8.lv/pasted).

James Mercer is the only person involved with my bucket list. I just want to see him sometime and buy him a beer, as thanks for his lyrical mastery. His lyrics often offered me insight in how to tackle problems and serious issues I was struggling with as I've grown up. Thanks, peace, and love brother, from Australia.

Had no idea Garden State brought The Shins to the world! I remember feeling I was super late to The Shins when I heard it in the movie. Had no idea they were new and unknown then. Garden State soundtrack change my life and taste in music. So glad to hear it’s part of their story. ❤️

So cool that his friend pulled him into his band....little gestures like this from friends have powerful, life changing impacts on people. And we all get to benefit from that friendship...

I just found out his band a few days ago and now I'm here spending an hour listening to his talk. I meant he is such an inspiration and what he was talking I totally can understand and feel very related

Always great interpersonal-connected interviews Chase. What a wholesome heartfelt person and artist James Mercer is. Only clicked that James is also the front-man to Broken Bells during the interview. I feel a connection with the music from The Shins and Broken Bells. Hug across the Pacific from Cody in Oz.
