The reality is that nature doesn't care if you have a mortgage, 5 kids, car payment, boat payment, or anything else, if the stocks drop or disappear as is with this case, then you can't catch crab if they're aren't any to catch. That's why it's called 'fishing' and not 'catching'. Back in 1980 something similar happened in Alaska and it took years to recover. I hope these guys get through this rough patch soon.

It's been announced that the snow crab season has been cancelled for the 2023 season due to the disappearing population. The article that I read has said that Alaskan waters are getting warmer and that's been making it very difficult for them to survive. The snow crab have either been dying out due to them starving to death or they've simply moved on to deeper and colder waters.

Unfortunate for the crabbers and families for sure! As others have noted it's about the crabs themselves. They like every life form are part of a local community of life where each species depends on the other for habitat, food etc. Today we're 8 billion precious humans and every year another 80 million net new precious humans join us. The species that make up our food supply could barely cope with 2 billion humans only 70 years ago. We need a new way forward.... Good luck to the displaced crabbers!!!

The thing is, the US can supply the demand since not many Americans care for seafood other than special occasions. US water are rich and the US usually sale the catch overseas where the demand is high. No one is dumb enough to fish in US waters but the Chinese are different. They roam the sea in large fleet of unregistered boats and fish in small countries water that doesnt have the means to protect their own water. At this point, within 100 years, the only living fish in the ocean are in US waters.

For everyone talking crap about the fisherman, here is what really happened. The Chinese are dredging the crab grounds destroying crab populations. So basically you traded a somewhat ethical way to catch crab to completely destroying the crab population. This happens all to often, judge first and never do research. Its the American way now.

There is an administration that goes out each year and survey's the sea floor for population of crab. its recorded and used for data in charts, which show the dropoff of the crab population over the past decade or so. very interesting topic, you should do some research on it if you're interested.

I think the fuel supply that these crab boats use in comparison to the world supply is a drop in the bucket.
