  • After many months of neglect I'm about to try start the 2.0 Pinto engine under the hood of my mk3 Ford Capri. As it's been a while since the engine last ran I'm doing a quick health check before turning the key. This involves removing the spark plugs and the rocker cover then giving the valvetrain a visual inspection - making sure I've got no unusual wear to the cam or the followers, and that the valve stem seals are in position and look in good health. Once that's done I'm going to prime the oil system. This is important as it ensures oil has worked it's way around the engine before I attempt to start it. This is especially crucial on a freshly built engine, but also doesn't hurt if the engine has sat for a while (like mine!)
The Engine in this video is a Modified 2.0 Pinto (SOHC) Engine out of my 1978 Ford Capri. For more Information, Tech, & Maintenance Tips on this classic 4 - banger, check out this playlist: • Ford Pinto (SOHC) Engi...

As I mentioned on an earlier video. I have fitted CVH valve stem oil seals. The design prevents the rubber seal sliding up the valve shaft.
Not bad for a 6 month lay up. Mine has not run for a few years now. Hopefully I'll get it back on the road this year. I was hoping to get it out last year but, real life issues massively got in the way. :¬/

Yeah I thought I replied on the CVH seal issue - because I have bronze valve guides and had some machining around the spring perch I can't use them. If I could, I would! Good luck getting yours back on the road. Life tends to get in the way with these things. I have a trackday booked in April and still plenty to do. Just been on hol for a week now need to get back on it

@@FastRust Ah yes. I seem to remember your reply now. The old memory isn't what is was. It could probably do with a defrag or a full system recovery! lol

Can't believe the state of that oil, is a pinto a diesel engine 😉
Millers oils do a laying up oil that also outgasses ( if you keep the rocker cover on) and prevents corrosion throughout engine. I also keep the plugs out and spray seafoam deepcreep into each cylinder via spark plug holes whick are in turn covered with a spiral wrapping of lint free cloth soaked again with deep creep.
When you had the rocker cover off I thought you might be going to apply a engine build paste to the lobes etc.
One final thing as its still winter does anyone else pre heat their oil on their stored cars?? Mine is cvh engined, albeit heavily ported and with a kccv23 cam and twin 40's.
Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

Yeah it's due a service before next trackday, probably kept that oil in there a little too long 😂 You have a much more thorough lay up process than I do. I just park it up and leave it! I did drop some engine oil on the cam lobes before cranking it for the first time, but that's all. As for pre heating the oil assuming you're in the UK we don't see temps low enough to need to do that. I use 20 50 in mine all year round 👍🏻 What kind of power does your CVH put out?

I recently got my Capri 1600xl back from the local garage and it's running very roughly. I notice that there is no hose connection on the vacuum advance unit and don't know where it all connects up. Any advice? I don't trust the garage. Its a VV carb.
