It's really fascinating to me just how much a game can change with one single area. Up until this point, OFF has been a game comprised of a series of disparate and almost entirely unrelated zones, with a handful of shared characters and a unifying goal being the only common thread between worlds; otherwise, the game lacks a solid narrative beyond the Batter's simple and somewhat mysterious "purify the world because I said so" mission, and the progression of the story essentially boils down to "enter zone, solve puzzles, kill boss, purify zone, move on to next zone and hope for an eventual explanation." Well, it's debatable just how much of an explanation the Room provides the player, as some would argue it does nothing but complicate an already opaque and frustratingly vague game, but it can't be denied that the area imbues the game with both a much-needed sense of cohesion and an overarching storyline that allows every single player to develop their own unique interpretation of the game as a whole. The mind-bending and surreal imagery, the nonsensical puzzles and abstract worldbuilding... all of it is cranked up to eleven in this final chapter, as the world approaches its end.
I would never call this game "frustratingly" opaque. The "ambiguity" is its most important aspect, in my opinion. It lets the story feel more personal than most anything I can think of. By not insisting upon one interpretation, it frees the mind from trying to fruitlessly describe the indescribable. Frees you from the alexithymia of thought.
Zone 0: It's nice and peaceful, I like it. Zone 1: Where the game ups the creep factor, but still great none the less. Zone 2: *clapclapclap* Zone 3: Probably my least favorite, but it's not bad. The Room: *terrified screeching*
By far, this is my favorite track of all the game. It's a relatively simple song but that emanates a so dark and desperating feeling, this music is just pure darkness.
Google has weird naming policies. I'm sure someone did it somewhere, though it's the kind of thing that would be much easier to do convincingly "backwards" on a piano or in low-bit music. On a small scaled, it's apparently not that unusual. I don't know about a whole song, though.
I heard a theory on reddit that the game is essentially an allegory for Hugo suffering from schizophrenia, and I feel like the song's name kinda fits that too.
@@DIVINE_WEAP0N Considering how desolate the zones seemed to be prior to the guardians making a civilization in them, that sorta fits. Wonder where the elsen were prior to the zones becoming the zones as we know them...
I’d say the name is more a direct metaphor for what the room is to the batter, it’s a plague(infestation) of memories on the batter’s brain, he doesn’t want to relive any of these memories because it all involves his ‘son’/creator, Hugo, who he’s on a mission to kill so as to achieve his ultimate goal
It's so awesome that the song plays in reverse when you enter a battle. I think more games should do that. EDIT: Just found out its the other way around, non-reverse plays in battle. Still, I think that be a pretty sick idea.
I just came here to say that I fucking love Japhet (and I kinda feel bad for that because of Valerie, but idk, I love the character design) and the OST
My own theory for this game Basically Hugo is dying from an illness and is in a coma (who would've guessed?) and his parents are divorced. (I know the wife and child part is a mistranslation, but I'm still convinced) he rarely gets to see his father, making him forget his face and what he looks like in general. This essentially creates the batter, who was formed off of his memories of playing baseball with him and the comic that his dad left. His mother, on the other hand, is too controlling but still loves him, making her the queen of Hugo's depressive coma world. He created these forms of his parents as a coping mechanism for his relationship with them (explaining the part where it was mentioned he created the batter and the queen.) When he first got sick, he wasn't allowed to leave his own room and hated the pills he was taking, explaining the part of the room where his bedroom was barred up. He got tired of his unfortunate reality, so he resorted to using his imagination and "creating" his own world, explaining the parts of the room that looked as if they were drawn by a child. He also created three imaginary friends (Dedan, Japhet, and Enoch) so he wouldn't feel alone. Eventually, his illness put him in a coma, marking when it started to hit the fan. The ghosts represent his illness, and the elsen are the cells of his body. The three guardians all represent a part of him and how he feels about his situation. Dedan represents the part of him that's angry about his fate, and doesn't want to die. This ends up being the only guardian that actually helps him instead of hurting him, as Dedan is pretty much the only one that doesn't go out of their way to kill the elsen. Japhet represents Hugo distracting himself from reality, hence why Japhet took the form of Valerie. It's also the reason why the mall and amusement park are there. It's all a distraction. Enoch is the one the represents his addiction to you guessed it, sugar. In the area, he tries to get the elsen to not worry about the specters so they can die, therefore getting more sugar. Hugo was addicted to candy in an attempt to have him forget about his sickness while also harming his health even more. (It was even stated that elsen could no longer bear reality without sugar) Enoch also represents the part of him that wants to live in hopes of him seeing a brighter future, hence the fact that elsen are rewarded by sugar after a long day of work. The judge is a strange character. He only shows up in the room right before the batter is about to pull the switch, and he is the first npc to appear. This may be because he is a manifestation of part of Hugo's subconscious, as he's never even been mentioned in the room, the place that pretty much represents his memories. The Judge helps out the batter at first, and only rebels at the very end. He could just represent his current thoughts as he dies in the hospital bed. At the beginning of the game he doesn't care for life at all and just doesn't want to be sick anymore, being why he didn't retaliate against the batter at first. He only didn't want to die right when he was about to. The ending of the game where you chose the judges side shows him wandering alone through the purified zones, representing Hugo being braindead, as most of his cells are basically gone. Zacharie is just there for the sole purpose of being a shopkeeper. It's pretty obvious when you consider his constant fourth wall breaks Hugo's father wants him off life support, and his mother doesn't. The father genuinely cares for him, playing baseball with him whenever he gets to see Hugo, however he doesn't want his child to suffer anymore, and is genuinely convinced that he is too far gone.
I seriously get True Lab vibes from this song...Like I feel like you have found what the game tried to hide from you and the mask has fallen off its face, just like the true lab from Undertale, also both are final dungeons and they have their song itself have a similar tone somehow
Here's my version of the Hugo imagination theory: Hugo is a dying, ill child, so ill that he was put in life support, which represents the OFF world. The Batter represents the doctors, who wanted to attempt curing him. Hugo's systems represent the zones. The zone's issues are a representation of the disease, and the guardians and their corrupt state are the infected internal organs. and when the Batter kills a guardian, the doctors have one of his internal organs shut down. It finally ends with killing Hugo himself, which represents the child's mind, putting him in a technically-dead-but-alive situation due to the life support, and that it represents the white zones and Secretaries. When the Batter goes to turn off the switch, it's a representation of the doctors going to put him off life support, until The Judge stops him, who represents the child's parents, refusing to let him die. The two final battles represent the argument the parents and doctors go through. If the Batter wins, the doctors put Hugo off life support. If the parents win, they keep him on life support. i've taken a couple of elements from other theories pls don't sue me
+Some Random „Fandom Trash“ Artist Thats very interesting when one remembers, how much trust the Judge putted into the Batters mission and what he says at the end..

The elsen in the game are supposed to be duplicates of him and that one train station is named after him. Of course, TV Tropes doesn’t always have accurate information and I’m not sure where this source of information is found, but I still found it to be interesting nonetheless.
