10 rare F1 car liveries

- Formula 1's strict rules governing car liveries means we don't get to see much variety from teams during a season. But over the course of F1 history there have been a few examples of special circumstances leading to paintjobs that only appear for a short time. Here we take a look at the 10 designs we remember most fondly - and make sure you let us know which ones we missed

It’s a cool coincidence that with Mercedes 125 years of racing anniversary livery the pit stops took the same amount of time as they did back then! Great work by the guys down at Mercedes for thinking of that!
Fernando Alonso's MCL33 at his final race is my favourite one off livery.

For their 125th anniversary, Mercedes also showed us how long a pit stop took back then! An impressive 50.3 seconds!

Ngl that early 2015 McLaren Honda in silver with the bright red stripe going around the nose is actually one of my favourite liveries ever

Honestly, in principle there’s nothing at all wrong with silver, black and red. They’re great colours for an F1 car. But…
The design had been applied with no thought or care here, and looks awful.
And McLaren are still without a title sponsor, which is an unacceptable state of affairs.
And they haven’t bothered to come up with a new livery despite pretending they were going to.
Aldas. The silver paint weighed over 4 kg. Weight saving was also a reason.
I feel that the quality of videos has been going up recently. It's shorter which makes it easier to watch and simply more enjoyable. Anyone else thinks so?
Shorter doesn't always mean more enjoyable. I myself like longer videos but that's just me

F2007 with the Malboro livery, appeared in few races and was the last F1 car to directly promote tobacco.
Appeared in Bahrain, Monaco and China, with wins in Bahrain (Massa) and China (Raikkonen). It was the one where the Marlboro looked the best in Ferrari in my opinion

Ferrari’s all red livery ( no sponsors) with the black nose cone for the 2001 Italian GP comes to mind, to give remembrance the tragic events of 9/11 in NYC.
Also a black nose cone when pope John Paul II died.
Love this livery as much as I hate that day 💔

That quartered Larousse looks gorgeous, the blue/green subsequent looked great too. But I LOVE the idea of the Ligier art car. Can you imagine pop art with a Benday dot effect on one car, abstract stuff on another, heraldic style work on another? It'd be absolutely amazing.

Here's a good one - jaguar ran an Oceans 12 tie in livery in monaco in 2004. The biggest feature was the absolutely ridiculous idea of a 200,000 dollar diamond embedded in the nose cone. This went exactly as expected, and when Christian Klien crashed, the diamond on his car was lost and never found
Amazing how much of this one forgets over the years... It happens with a lot in F1. Do you for example remember that BAR once ended 2nd in the championship? I had completely forgot about that and almost couldn't believe it but I did follow that whole season closely..
BAR's "555" livery was stunning.
I really miss McLaren with Silvery color from 1997-2006
Not gonna lie, that Ligier livery looked very cool!
To this day, i still don’t understand why BAR was not allowed to race that beautiful blue BAR.

The pre-Ron Dennis years at McLaren saw a Lowenbrau livery that was glorious to the eye but was only used for a few races.

I always heard "McLaren-Mercedes" when my dad was watching F1 as a kid so right until I started getting in to cars as an adult in the last 2 years, I believed that McLaren was a part of Mercedes like AMG or something

ARROWS appeared in 1978 South African GP in white with GOLD cockpit for new sponsor Warsteiner Beer
Riccardo Patrese led most of that race until a minor part failed , putting him out of the race
After that race ARROWS ran the cars completely painted in Gold
My fave would have to be the 2012 RBR wings for life livery. Not only did Mark Webber won the Silverstone race but an image of me was on the car as well.
I think there should be more of the one off livery’s in F1. It would make F1 that bit more interesting and it is often done here in Australia with the V8 Supercars category.

Silver and red or orange isMcLaren and silver is Mercedes(silver arrow) , it's like a feud between mom and dad after a bad divorce.😂
There are just a few colors really accompanied by a status, like British racing green, Ferrari/scuderia red and French blue(bleu de France).
And I believe there are a lot more I forgot😊
There was an orange McLaren in the mid 2000s ran by hakkinen in testing, Oceans Eleven Jaguar should be in the list also same as Tambay blue McLaren.
The orange liveried McLaren was a regular thing for a few years. Coulthard, Hakkinen & Paffett all ran it in testing. It was a tradition, and not really that rare.
I have Kimi Raikkonen’s MP4-17 toy car as old as mine and i absolutely love it
Lotus looked deadly in that colour especially with the rivets
The short lived Jägermeister Euro-Brun livery comes to mind
Think that would've been a more rare entry than Larrousse, given that EuroBrun barely ever made the grid anyway.
17 second advert that can’t be skipped UA-cam are getting very greedy
Red Bull found it surprisingly easy to run one off liveries compared to other teams. The Wings for life cars mentioned here for instance, but they also did the Superman and Star Wars liveries as well. (they also did a 007 one, but that was not really much of a livery change, more just a few sponsor decals changed)
Also, wasn't it 1994 when Sauber had a fairly big livery change during the season?

Again featuring Ferrari, my favourite temporary livery was the F2001 devoid of sponsorship but with a black nose cone at the Italian Grand Prix in 2001. The timing of the Italian Grand Prix was unfortunate, because it occurred less than a week after the awful events of 9/11. All the teams had some sort of condolences, messages of support to America and Stars and Stripes flags stickers attached to them, but Ferrari's was the most humble yet most eye-catching. The F2001 was a good looking car, but the livery for Monza was simple yet stiring. The lack of sponsors showed that the team, like everyone else that weekend were reeling from the shocking images from 9/11 and the black nose cone was a touching mark of respect to those who lost their lives in the attacks

One off Lowenbrau livery for McLaren in 78-79 at North American races were really nice. The Imperial Lotus in red also very striking, also sad in lots of ways as it was the final F1 race for Nilsson - a talent so prematurely lost. But I think nothing can top that art Ligier livery of 1993.
As for the full season livery, the Wolf of 1977 is a work of art.
Also, a special mention should go to the Penthouse sponsored Hesketh of Rupert Keegan also of 1977. Not a one off, a season livery but something you will never see again! Check it out!
The Vodafone mclaren liveries were so sexy. they also won their last title (hamilton 08) and their last win (button 12) with that kind of liverie. I don't know, but the merc livery, does look way less silvery, than the mclarens
McLaren ones looked chromed
I seem to remember Hesketh (I think) running an all-gold car the year after James Hunt left. Probably a sponsor colour. And the Fittipaldi in yellow and brown, the colours of sponsors Skol (a beer company)

The Arrows Team Repsol/t-minus livery was a very interesting one

The Singapore livery with the Canon logo was the best
What about McLaren Lamborghini 1993 test livery?
It looked better with Canon sponsorship.
The Haas VF17 from Monaco onwards in 2017. Switch from red and gray and white gray.
That Kronenburg car touched me
The black McLarens of 2015 & 2016 were beautiful
Now adding Ferrari's 2020 1000 GP Burgundy livery, Red Bull's Camo test livery, and Mclaren's 2021 Monaco Gulf Livery

That 2012 Red Bull livery was brilliant, shame they didn't stick with it. Looked amazing and was a nice gesture to fans.
Fun fact: When Ferrari raced as North American Racing Team in 1964, the races coincidentally were held in North America.
What about the 1991 Pepsi liveried Jordan 191? I understand that it was only for the Japanese GP b/c 7Up, which was their normal sponsor, was not available in Japan.
I quess its not different enough as the main color scheme remained mostly the same.

The Mission Winnow Ferrari livery was rather short lived. Does anyone think it’ll come back in the remaining races this season?

I think it's been banned in some countries for "advertising tobacco", and we know what F1 thinks about it
Maybe it could come back in a country that doesn't mind for tobacco, but for now, the MW branding has been retired from Scuderia Ferrari and Moto GP's Team Ducati.

It’s a strange one actually since the official line after they decided to remove it for Canada was that the decision would be taken on a race by race basis - but it’s never been mentioned ever since.
Personally I did like that livery, but it quickly became a bit of a joke at the same time. “Mission Spinnow” during Seb’s mishaps and many people thought it was meant to be pronounced “win now”, which was funny because they just could not win a race at that time due to accidents, unreliability and lack of pace at those circuits

And actually, Larrousse ran the Kronenbourg livery in Monaco too back in '94.
This remind me of the Redbull RB11 put on a monotone dazzle camouflage decal.
Didn't even know that the Forti was green and white for those few races!
The Italian national colour is blue. The reason Ferrari ran in red was to distinguish from the French cars.

Black is Lotus' 'Traditional colour'?? I remember the Gold Leaf scheme which was as popular as the JPS one.
The 1961 Belgian Grand Prix result 1st Phil Hill , 2nd Wolfgang Von Trips, 3rd Richie Ginther, 4th Olivier Gendebien, all in works Ferrari 156's. the first three were in Italian national racing colours of red and Gendebien's Ferrari was in Belgiums national racing colours of Yellow.
This was worthy of a mention (Autosport ) your standards are dropping.
I liked the Lowenbrau livery that McLaren used at the 1978 North American races better than their usual Marlboro liveryl.

Arguably one of the most famous one off liveries of all time would have to be the White and Green on the original McLaren M2B at Monaco in 1966. This was done in a deal with movie producers of the film Grand Prix which was being filmed at the time. The car for the rest of 1966 used the New Zealand racing colours of green, black and silver. Why was this an famous one off. The 1966 Monaco Grand Prix was McLaren's first race, and it began with a one off.
What about Jan Lammers’ 1979 Dutch GP Shadow Samson livery...

US GP 2001. The US GP took place after 9/11/2001 so the black nose was added

You missed the very best! The williams running at Donnington and silverstone in their Sega livery, where from the sides, the cars looked like the main Sonic the hedgehog was driving the car!
It was a briĺliant and rare example of humor and marketing painted onto one of the top cars of tis era
Alec Brown ah yes! Most likely overlooked due to it being a subtle change, not a major one.
That sega one was cool. And they were also ovelooked in Donington due to the best lap ever recorded
1994 Larrouse was just gorgeous.
When they were filming the movie "Grand Prix" in 1966, didn't some of the cars in the actual races have different liveries to match shots from the movie?
How about the final year of Brabham where they turned the cars from a normal dark blue/white to florescent pink/electric blue number? It didn't do them any good as they didn't finish the season but as I recall the pink/blue car gave Damon Hill his first start in F1 at Silverstone.

I Really like when a Livery is changed for a specific driver
Think of Mclaren with “Mika” and “David” on the side ( because of tabaco ban)
or Mercedes 2017 Red numbers for Lewis Blue Numbers for Valtteri.
I think the car should have a bit of personality.
Maybe an Orange stripe for Max, Chili for Carlos, Ice cream for Kimi or #Blessed for lewis

Benetton seemed to run a different sidepod sponsor for nearly every race during 1993.
Also changed the sidepod sponsors during the 1994 season. Benetton Sportsystem, Oracle, Minichamps model cars and at the end of the season they even had the yellow Bitburger sponsor which would be on the car in 1995.
@@srs27 Yeah I know, I was going to mention that. But the 1993 season was ridiculous! I remember Onyx model cars bringing out about 10 versions you could buy!!!
@@tegworld Agreed. 1993 was insane from Benetton. They started changing the sidepod sponsor again in 1996 (Benetton Sportsystem, Rollerblade, Prince and Nordica). In 1997 they just rotated the two (Prince and FedEx).
It must be noted, Benetton Sportsystem owned major brands such as Nordica, Prince, Rollerblade, Kästle and Killer Loop at the time.
