I have worked in the area for the last 40 years as a volcanologist for geothermal energy exploration. Fantale has two types of volcanic eruptions. The first is Strombolian or Hawaiian type, that has occured until a hundred years ago. This is less dangerous for the people. The second is explovive Plinean type that has given to big deposits of ignimbtite covering very large areas, including the town of Methara, the main road to the port and railroad. This is really dangerous! Most of the indications that I saw on youtube show that the magma is approaching the surface to erupt. Steam, mud etc. eruptions are results of the super heating of the aquifers underneath. In short, the volcanologist who are in Addis may be able to distinguish the type of eruption based on the infications and suggest evacuation or other actions to take, soon. If Dofan volcano is going to erupt or get activated, then i can see another danger, that is H2S (highly yoxic) gas production, since the volcano has a big sulphur deposit.

That area is part of the Great Rift. It will become a new ocean one day. With out the monitors, like Yellowstone has, the subtle earthquakes can be missed. Those are the ones that are needed to understand what is going on. And people should not be near the active areas, there is no way to predict what kind of eruption and time it will occur.
Yes it is part of the great rift but it should be noted that like not all magmatic intrusions lead to volcanic eruptions not all rift complexes will continue to develop into an ocean basin. I guess it probably will but yeah the amount of unknowns here with what we do know paints a worrying picture. After all just the Earthquakes and hydrothermal explosion threats should be enough to trigger evacuations in that immediate area yet alone if we have an actual eruption from a bimodal volcanic complex like typically seen in continental rift zone settings.
There is what's called the 'Emergency Call Paradox', or the '911 Paradox'. It's described as believing that someone else has already called for help when no one has. This leads to emergency services not being alerted to the emergency and not being able to save lives or property. This paradox birthed the adage 'Better to call for help and be another of thousands than not call and be one of the thousands.'. Similar to 'Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.' Fortune favors the prepared.
@@jamesbarry1673 Cause not many notable eruptions have happened there recently to produce flashy footage and captivating stories. If there's one silver lining to this, that's probably about to drastically change.

With the current Amhara insurgency, which AFAIK controls much of the rural areas around Addis Abeba, it will be even more complicated than in a peace scenario.
I love your heart! I am sharing this video and appreciate your message! I just watched someone doing an interview with someone from Ethiopia while standing near the mud and steam eruptions and thought that was not smart!
To anyone who would dismiss present/future warnings because nothing came of past warnings, keep in mind: It is often the proper heeding of warnings and taking of precautions that causes nothing to come of those warnings. A preventable disaster is often obviously preventable in hindsight, but a prevented disaster is often invisible in hindsight and a disaster that was prevented and one that would have never happened are often indistinguishable.
From the U.S.G.S shake map it shows all earthquakes in the last 7 day as all being 10km depth. I could be wrong but this could represent a magma chamber pushing and straining other magma dikes and pushing magma into the 1 we know. Which would mean the magma chamber is quite large and since this volcano is a relative unknown, it may definitely be appropriate to assume the worst as you did. As much strain as this activity is causing on the shake map, I would guess but not assume the magma chamber or magma source is either slightly larger, or slightly smaller than the circumference of what the quake activity represents. It also could mean that the other magma dikes could reactivate or are in the beginning stages of reactivating, (possibly best or worst case I don't know?) or it could be in the stages of dike combination where they define a new magma chamber as a whole. So many unknowns with this one.
Hey you are doing the right thing by outlining the worst case scenario and warning folks to evacuate!!!! Lives are at risk. You can’t undo dead. Thank you for what you do
We appreciate that you share what is happening or what could happen. Saving lives is one of the most important things anyone can do in our world. 😊 You always own up if you're wrong! We appreciate that also.
The government *seriously* needs to get more sensors on that volcano. And regardless of the eruption threat, those quakes are a very clear, proven, present, and *worsening* danger; if mid and upper 5s are already dealing out ample damage, people need to get clear BEFORE they start getting the 6s or higher. I've been through a high 6 in an area that has pretty good structural codes precisely because of the quake threat and that was nightmare enough. I don't want to imagine how much worse that experience would be in an area where the buildings mostly AREN'T built to that level. 😨
AFAIK the government is not in full control of those areas: the Tigray war was succeeded by the Amhara armed uprising and these live all around Addis Abeba, incl. the volcanic risk region, and are in control of many of the rural areas.
@@LuisAldamiz And even if they were, there's an unfortunate trend in desperately poor areas of stealing and scrapping seismometers. IIRC this is a very big issue with monitoring Nyiragongo and I imagine it could be here too. The government just doesn't have the resources and the people are desperate.
Frankly, most Ethiopians have many more pressing concerns than the possible, near-term eruption of a volcano. These brave people have lived with the volcanoes for centuries and still make the decision to live among them because their options are few or alternatives too extreme. Don't be too hard on them. The Neapolitans have all the money, technology, and communication that anyone would ever need and still choose to remain among the volcanoes.
A very sensible video. Despite this being dangerous, it's also really interesting! A possible new volcano might be born, like Paricutin in Mexico! That could be pretty exciting as long as everyone nearby is evacuated. It'd be amazing to watch from a safe distance. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!
in the circumstances i feel you giving a strong heads up is well justified. better some perhaps inconvenient action now than potentially deadly consequences later! and kudos for the B5 reference quoting ambassador Delenn the sadly missed Mira Furlan
I have been wondering why there have been so many 5+ earthquakes in Ethiopia lately. This answers my questions. Thank you! I hope people take care and stay safe.
@Geohub NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR SAVING PEOPLE! The absolute worst thing that could happen is: more people are safe and fewer people are hurt. A win for everyone... keep your head up and thank you. Sincerely, The human race
This is the tightrope that all volcanologists and seismologists have to walk: say something and be ridiculed when it doesn't happen, or keep silent and be lambasted when it does. The truth is that people will never be happy no matter what you do: whilst I often hear that people complain after being evacuated and nothing happens, I've yet to hear of anyone thanking the scientists for giving them a heads-up, and giving them enough time to leave and save their lives. Yet, if the scientists remain silent, and something occurs, there are immediate protests of "Why didn't you say anything?!" and "Why couldn't you tell us this was coming?!" And as for the B5 quote, I applaud your taste in visual entertainment!
The real disaster is not the quake itself but the lack of preparedness starting with weak construction and bad planning. If we can end war and fiat economics we can focus better, begin making better decisions and put ourselves above all of this. Thank you for your honest assessments. We need more of this kind public thinking across the whole human race!

Lo que me preocupa es el tamaño de la camara de magma, al estar debajo y en el medio de una dorsal, seguramene seria muy grande.
Similar to 'Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.'
Fortune favors the prepared.
You are doing the right thing, and you will have a clear conscience no matter what happens next. Thank You for your courage.
People forget how volcanic Ethiopia is
Those mountains didn't happen by accident, and it's open knowledge that the African continent is rifting in that Eastern segment.
@E4439Qv5 but I can tell you I can't remember the last time I heard about an active volcano in Ethiopian
@@jamesbarry1673 Cause not many notable eruptions have happened there recently to produce flashy footage and captivating stories. If there's one silver lining to this, that's probably about to drastically change.
Keep up your great work keeping all of us informed about all that is going on.
As a habitual underreactor (ahh, trauma), I really appreciate your messaging motivated by "better safe than sorry" philosophy
Thank you this is important information to stay away from
the volcano & save your life don’t tackle chances
I just finished a Babylon 5 rewatch this week. Weird.
I played that very scene just last night
Good work as always. Keep it up. I hope the people in the region are able to keep themselves safe.
Your videos are great and informative. I'd trust your advise 💯
❤ to you. You care about people so earnestly. Thank you.
Thank you for warning people about this!!
I'm from Ethiopia and i fell the earthquake twice in single one is after midnight in Ethiopia in 1/4/2025 3:53PM for 3 seconds and in a after mid-day in 10:43AM for about 4 seconds it's i didn't believed until i feel it. serious, I'm even living in ground imagine those who are living in buildings. We should pray.
I'm with you on this one Geology Hub
Thank you for putting in the hard work to create human content. I have been subscribed for a couple years now and I click every notification I receive from your channel.
I’ve been very concerned by the alarming number of earthquakes occurring in this area of Ethiopia. Watching from the States.
Hard part is I imagine that many people have nowhere to go, or to go for very long.
With the current Amhara insurgency, which AFAIK controls much of the rural areas around Addis Abeba, it will be even more complicated than in a peace scenario.
Thank You ! ! !
thank you for giving us your honest opinion. It seems like a no brainer to take these warnings seriously
Severed Dreams!
Look at you going up against the "system"! Nice
The 10.0km depth is because the data they're getting isn't good enough to figure out a depth really, so they use their default number of 10.0km.
@@Lessinath makes sense.
Hey you are doing the right thing by outlining the worst case scenario and warning folks to evacuate!!!! Lives are at risk. You can’t undo dead. Thank you for what you do
Thanks for sounding the warning of the likelihood of this eruption. You are a trusted voice.
We appreciate that you share what is happening or what could happen. Saving lives is one of the most important things anyone can do in our world. 😊 You always own up if you're wrong! We appreciate that also.
I have strong sense of knowing if the information is true or not. I approve your message. Thank you 🙏🏽
I felt closer to Delenn than to most meatspace humans and I find that both gratifying and terrifying. And there is a beautiful symmetry in that
You are a true scientist sir!!❤ you are not an alarmist you are A SCIENTIST ❤💪 thank you so much for all you do
The government *seriously* needs to get more sensors on that volcano.
@firefuryAmahira
You ment God right😂😂
@@LuisAldamiz And even if they were, there's an unfortunate trend in desperately poor areas of stealing and scrapping seismometers. IIRC this is a very big issue with monitoring Nyiragongo and I imagine it could be here too. The government just doesn't have the resources and the people are desperate.
@@StuffandThings_ - I was not aware of that but makes sense, of course.
Thanks for this update!
This sounds to be very dangerous! I hope people are listening!
A great and clear line from Delenn from Babylon 5.
" i am from ethiopia and Whoever this guy is, his predictions have been correct so far. Stay away from this area as quickly as possible."
You have done what you can to warn and should sleep well , my friend.
in the circumstances i feel you giving a strong heads up is well justified. better some perhaps inconvenient action now than potentially deadly consequences later! and kudos for the B5 reference quoting ambassador Delenn the sadly missed Mira Furlan
Thanks for the advice.
This is worrying. Stay safe, everyone. Leave if you can.
Hi! I woke up at 6 this morning. There was no earthquake where I live. For some reason I have a pounding headache. All best for Ethiopia
Better safe than sorry.
And filming😎
I have been wondering why there have been so many 5+ earthquakes in Ethiopia lately. This answers my questions. Thank you! I hope people take care and stay safe.
You've done a good thing my friend.
I lived in Ethiopia for two years in the Peace Corps. People there are so wonderful. My heart goes out to them.
You have knowledge. You called it. Good enough.🙂
Thank you for your information 🙏 👀
@Geohub NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR SAVING PEOPLE!
The absolute worst thing that could happen is: more people are safe and fewer people are hurt. A win for everyone... keep your head up and thank you.
Sincerely,
The human race
That is by far my favorite line from a series that is made out of favorite lines.
Thank you very much for your report here. 😅❤❤
I support your sense of what you felt you should do. Thank you.
Overreaction?

👍👌
Videos like this are why UA-cam is so great.
THANK YOU. ⚘
Picked the wrong time to quit using B5 quotes. 😂 In all seriousness, best to warn than to mourn. 😢
Thank you for being just so informative, people need this as many governments don't let on to their people x
Yet, if the scientists remain silent, and something occurs, there are immediate protests of "Why didn't you say anything?!" and "Why couldn't you tell us this was coming?!"
And as for the B5 quote, I applaud your taste in visual entertainment!
Great video by the way! Very well said
The real disaster is not the quake itself but the lack of preparedness starting with weak construction and bad planning. If we can end war and fiat economics we can focus better, begin making better decisions and put ourselves above all of this. Thank you for your honest assessments. We need more of this kind public thinking across the whole human race!
