This was the first ship I worked on as an 18 year old Engineer Officer Cadet for P&O back in 1981. Brings back fond memories, especially now as I fly private jets over the same routes that I once sailed.
Very nice , this documentary refreshed my memory. I traveled several times in the fifties on board the Dwarka and her three sisters Dara , Dumra, and Daressa of the BI , between Basra and Muscat and Bahrain , and still remember the details of the daily life on board these ships …. Great memories.
Very good, thanks for sharing! I had the privilege of voyaging on the BI sister ship 'Sangola' in 1960, from Calcutta to Tokyo and back, calling at Chittagong, Rangoon, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. I was only four and a half years old, but still remember many aspects of the journey, as my eyes were "wide open in awe"! BI were a great line, with some great characters amongst the crew. Happy days! That journey instilled a love for transport and travelling in me, not lost to this day. I went on to get my UK commercial pilots licence, and missed this BBC documentary on the telly in 1979, as I had travelled out to India overland from the UK in 1978 for a few years voluntary work. Truly as you say about this documentary, "a way of life"!
As well as the World About Us, Dwarka was also used in the Richard Attenborough Film "Ghandi", in Indira Dock in Bombay. She can be seen when Ghandi arrives in India. Some officers and family were used as extras at the top of the gangway.
Thnx for this beautiful video with golden memories....I have a journey with this lovely and my dream ship last in 1974 from Doha to Karachi and again Doha... Thnx again..... regards Tahir Hassan
MY MEMORY SHIP I LOVE THIS COZ I TRAVEL ON IT IN 1974 WITH LATE MOTHER SIBLINGS FROM QATAR TO KARACHI ROUND UP TRIP AND CANNOT FORGET THIS BEAUTIFUL VOYAGE. AS WELL AS SHIP... TAHIR FROM DUBAI.
I travelled deck class on this ship as an 18 year old hitch hiking around the world in November 1965. It cost about 45 Rupees one way from Kuwait to Bombay. I met Robert Dreyfuss who introduced me to Meher Baba and we read God Speaks during the voyage. Meher Baba became and still is my Beloved Master.
Great video, little has changed, the migrant workers from the Sub Continent still provide the labour in the Gulf states, together with newer arrivals from Indonesia and the Philippines in recent years. I like the captain, a very proud man steeped with tradition. Great video, most enjoyable.
I was 3/O in 79, 2/O in 80, and Security Officer in 81 on the old 'Queen of the Gulf' as we referred to her. The schedule took 16 days followed by five days turnround in Bombay:- Bombay, Karachi, Muscat (Oman), Dubai, Bahrain, Kuwait, Doha, Karachi, Bombay. (plus occasional calls at Abu Dhabi).
@@michaelgabout4459 I was 3/O in the early 60s, after the sinking of the sister ship "Dara" off Dubai. Many memories. Such as the challenge of the Indo/Pak war. We had to transfer all Karachi bound cargo and passengers to Dwarka in Muscat from Santhia, and transferred all our Bombay destined passengers and cargo to them. This had to be done by the ship's crew whilst tied alongside each other-quite a task. Nevertheless, we coped, and sailed into Karachi, and sailed again without incident. We spent the next few months sailing between Bombay and Karachi with refugees-very sad work.

By the way, is there anyone her who would know about the schedule of the ship then, especially between Karachi and Bombay ?
