I love Tanner's Ben Shapiro impersonation. 😂 Also, I agree with y'all. Is Barbie capitalist and an ad for Barbie dolls? Yes. Is it also a commentary on how patriarchy hurts everyone? Yes. It can be both.

I watched his whole bit. It seemed his main complaint was that it was poorly written. I haven't seen it yet, so I can neither confirm nor deny how well written it in fact of matter is. I can confirm that my adult daughter loved it. I can also confirm that it isn't the kind of movie that has to really work out all of the kinks of motivations and so on to be hella fun. FFS, it's about a plastic doll! I can further confirm that it has only started to make the money it will make, but has already exceeded everything Ben has ever had a hand in writing, so it really comes off as sour grapes.
Meanwhile, my transphobic TBM son likes it, because he thinks it is a sneak attack on feminism. After all, at the end (he tells me), [spoiler alert] she knows she is a real girl when she obtains genuine female anatomy that she did not previously have. To him, this makes the movie anti-trans. I'm guessing he doesn't remember the time he put messed up his sister's toys by putting a Ken's head on a Barbie body....

Just saw Barbie last night with my son - so fun! We loved it and it gave us a lot to talk and think about after.
Also so true about Bridget Jones! I loved the book and when the movie came out I was disgusted with the way they focused on her being “fat.” It’s pretty clear in the book that she’s not actually overweight (she lists her weight daily and it fluctuates between 125 and 135 lbs) so with that context you get that she borderline has an eating disorder.

So on y’all asking if anyone did see Oppenheimer, I did Barbieheimer it, and it was an intense experience, and heads-up, this is way more about Oppenheimer then it is Barbie. As an AFAB person, who is from an ethnic background of both a Jewish and Japanese (specifically Okinawa and Hiroshima), going from Barbie to Oppenheimer was very hard to process in all honesty. Like going from the existential identity crisis of that Billie Eilish song to a movie about people my family has very recent ancestral ties to being picked to be nuked was really overwhelming.
Like yeah, it didn’t feel like it was romanticizing the history necessarily, but it still felt like propaganda, the way it framed things felt very,”well we had to be the ones to make it, because otherwise Soviet Russia or the Germans were going to do it and do worse things with it.” The only plus I could see in the framing was that they did acknowledge that the war was already coming to an end without it anyway, and it was for sure not necessary beyond being a dick measuring contest to allegedly dissuade future atrocities from Russia, however it seemed to try and diminish his responsibility by making a point to say he was lied to and mislead about the role the bomb would have, and imply that he had no real say in how it was used (when it still showed him directly involved in meetings deciding where it would be used, and the fact that he 100% knew while making it that almost exclusively civilians would die) and showed him feeling bad about people dying, which while it is possible he was lied to, and didn’t have much choice, and felt guilt in the deaths by his creation, that doesn’t change that the damage was done. However I’m pretty big on impact over intent, in that it doesn’t matter if you didn’t mean to cause unnecessary harm, you still did.
And idk, I just really don’t feel like anyone who had a roll in the oppression and/or death of civilians deserves any sympathy.
It felt very much like trying to root for the people who had my grandpa in Manzanar vs the people who had my Jewish side in the other camps. I couldn’t not see just another type of cruelty and diminishment of other lives as acceptable collateral.
So basically, TLDR; my takeaway was humanity is responsible for so many atrocities, and honestly beyond that it felt as pointless and steeped in propaganda as the US dropping those bombs in the first place.
Also, edit: I didn’t realize how long this comment was, I just have a lot of thoughts and feelings, about this, oops 😅

    • @Elizardbeth03

My takeaway from it was "think through your morals before you start an endeavor" cause 5 yrs later he regretted being involved and had he thought through potential ramifications he could've at the very least not contributed to the atrocities

    • @Elizardbeth03
      @Elizardbeth03 Рік тому +2

I also appreciate that through every step you understand why he makes the decisions he does and you know he's making the wrong choice. It really emphasized to me that anyone can become a monster if we don't check ourselves and listen to other perspectives. Nobody is a villain in their own head and if you allow yourself to exist in an echo chamber it's easy to get to some messed up extremes.

this is basic billionaire philanthropic activity(bill and mellida gates foundations has donated more money to people in the 3rd world,we r not saying bill gates is a good person we should support him, should not criticize the fu*k out of him, there no.s of yt videos where they explain how shady those philanthropic activities are and not to mention the existence of charity is the symptom of a broken System.)
This is even done by the multi millionaires too
Even labor billionaires like Jay z,rihanna,Kayne /ye(used to be a billionaire),labron James(including other 700 million plus artists like Taylor)
They don't have billion dollars by their name by just selling their work directly to their audiences ,they engage in corporate business which includes exploitation of the working class just like any other billionaire(non labor) does ,they have to buy and sell stocks which is parasitic in nature for the working class , they have put out other smaller artists by using their capital's leverage(stocks, bonds, media apparatus covering them which makes stay on the top)
Just consume their art(music, movies, etc),that is totally fine, moral judgement of personal consumption is pretty much useless movement(slacktivism) to engage in to.
But we also don't have to defend a billionaire or a multi-millionaire(even a labor billionaire or multi millionaire).
Taylor Swift is not a person ,Taylor is a brand
,But they want to sell that perspective to their audience (their consumers) that Taylor Swift is a person(seems like u r that person that they were targetting towards bc how u write this reply, even though u have the aesthetic of a leftist person,or atleast a progressive I guess)
Her brand/company can't talk about actual movements which will impact the status quo which will impact the bottom line of their funders (label, online and offline campaigning brands, events organisation, merchandise) which r backed up by the shareholder of different other corporations, and the funders don't want to upset their shareholders, boards members.
Just like any other brand which engages in liberal slacktivism, performative activism(in Taylor's case it's performative white feminism marketed as a liberating product for the majority white audience of hers(and few poc audience of hers) to feel like they doing activism while consuming Taylor's work,it's like Mr beast clean the ocean campaign he tried to do, normies were all for it

39:00 It's a PR thing ,you admitted yourself,
But u r saying it was a good thing for the people who are watching this movie in general?
It's gonna be negatively influential(greenwashing of Mattel, and normies will buy more of their products and the products associated with barbie from other brands would also be bought by the normies more) to the normies who watched this movie.
U r progressive but u r in the minority in the 1st world/imperial core nation u live in.
And Socialists r in the negligible no. In the 1st world.
u cant expect the normies to have a materialist(leftist sense) understanding of the world, they have a shallow understanding-they take bits and pieces in the form of ideas from different ideologies and what they see in their immediate environment and try to assemble their "structural" pov of the world and how it works.
Generally normies don't have much of a media literacy (libs have more than reactionaries, fascist plebs) to not fault of their own ,it's the system they live ,that is failing to provide them with class consciousness, materialist pov, critical thinking skill, media literacy.
I think it's an entertaining movie ,that's it
Seeing it that way would be productive
Also I think this movie was gender essentialist (binary) which is bad and holding back patriarchal structure, there is no gender abolition pov in that movie at all,
btw it was a fun movie experience (theatre experience).
    I am a nb btw.
I am criticizing this movie slightly bc this movie is supposed to be about "gender" and "patriarchy".
Also i know that whenever a media is created by capitalists and that media can't be made which is a threat to the status quo(capitalism, patriarchy)
It will always be mild criticism of capitalism and their Consequences of patriarchal and heteronormative, gender essentialist dynamics in society in a global capitalistic system.
