I went with the razor4000 rf and man was I blown away…1760 first measure offhand then hit 2440…love to have a tripod and big object to test the 4k…as you know always over shoot what range yer hopin to achieve when purchasing range finders…that raptar is the cats meow…shot a pulsar on a msr10lr 22” 6.5 last night and man what a setup for coyote tournaments we have…30cal silencerco can/brake made it round a $9k ar-10..so much for my dd5v3..lol
The wilcox raptar is solid but I've noticed it seems to run out of juice at about 1500 yds depending on target. I really want to try a set of the new sig bdx 10k ranging binos, from what I can tell those should do just about everything I want in a rangefinder. Maybe I'll be able to snag a pair from the used market next year, stay tuned!
Very informative. I have been hunting down one of those red lights for years, but no one ever mentioned the name of those things, let alone acknowledge it on there targets, they were all just too busy talking about there rifle. Thank you again.
Thank you! My opinion velocity consistency is one of the most overlooked things when it comes to ELR consistency. Shooting tiny groups is easy, velocity is what really takes a little extra work.
Here in New Zealand I use reflective sticky tape stuck to the target or prop holding the target. Enjoying the content of your vids so far so keep it up.
Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to support the channel! For the time being I’m really enjoying creating content, where that leads though is anybody’s guess. Maybe one day I’ll be able to quit my day job and start a long range shooting school!
Very good video and I use a LabRadar because I also shoot pistols too. Love the Send it level because the lights are easier for this old Marine to see. I have the Kilo3000 laser rangefinder that goes out to 5,000 yards which is no problem if you are using your truck to shot back too. I also use a Kestrel 5700 Elite to tell me how much for elevation and wind
Greetings from Europe. Enjoying your videos as they are from someone only about a year ahead of me in long range vs a lot of other vids from people with a PhD in long range shooting 37XCs. Looking forward to improving on my 1300 metres with a 6.5 Creedmoor, once my 300 PRC arrives next month.
Really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos and reach out! We've all got to start somewhere and my thoughts are showing my journey will encourage others. You are going to love your 300PRC when it shows up. By far my favorite caliber!
Just posted a comment about gear in the first of your videos that I discovered :) (Barrett MRAD and Ruger Precision). Thanks for the information here, especially target choice. That is probably overlooked often. Do you have any suggestions for tri-pods, rifle bi-pods, scopes (and reticle choices), factory ammunition? You mention reloading. I am gearing up for that. Following my Dad. He reloads 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. I would love to see a dedicated ELR reloading video from you. Thanks, and cheers from Austin, TX.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica I got a pretty good deal on a Larue predatobr in 308. Older gun, but I'm new to all this so it's something to learn on and progress from. Just needs a new barrel.
That's an area where I need more experience. I had a kestrel years ago and at that time I felt like aside from the wind meter on the kestrel that I was able to get similar performance out of the shooter app on my iphone. That said, Kestrels have come a long ways since then and have many additional features and capabilities now that they didn't have then. I've really been thinking of purchasing one of these new kestrels to try out. That would be a great opportunity for a stand alone video reviewing my experience with a new kestrel vs the shooter app.
Haha I think the channel has a long ways to go before that happens! Appreciate the support though, it's your interaction that will help get us on that level!
Excellent videos. Loving this channel just recently found through the last texas plinking video. Thanks for the info, im starting to get into “long range”. (No where near ELR) What range would you say a bubble level is necessary? I have played around with a level but seem to struggle more when focusing on the level vs not worrying about it.
I've always felt like 600yds and beyond the level is something worth having. It's cheap insurance to make sure you are not unknowingly introducing cant into the rifle. Running a level does take some practice as it's very easy to spend more time focusing on the level vs what is going on down range. The more you practice with a level the more confident and effective you'll become with it. Anymore I just make a quick glance at it before each shot, really not distracting at all.
You did refer to ballistic calculators but not specifically. So the phone calculators and then separate equipment like the Kestrel or others. Thanks again!!! DOL
I cover the ballistic calculator a bit more in part 3 with the shooting content, but more around the shooter app that I'm actually using. Really that's one area where I need more experience. I had a kestrel years ago and felt the shooter app provided very similar performance. Given how far the Kestrels have come with capability and additional features, I'd love to pick up a new one give it a try again.
you've made a couple of times comment on SD, which implies Chronograph... quality/accurate speed... how about chatting to your sponsor and doing a video about the different options and their features/price/accuracy ? looking forward to part 3.
That's a great idea! I've always just used the magneto speed and assumed it was accurate, I've never actually tested different chronographs. That said I've always wanted a lab radar. Maybe if I can snag a lab radar I do a side by side compare.
That's something I can cover for sure. Have to tell you though, reloading is one area where I'm never satisfied and constantly tweaking primarily in hopes of getting more consistent velocities.
I run the shooter app on my iphone and have been for years. I believe it cost something like $10 and in my opinion it's a great tool. Would love to try a new kestrel one day.
I don't believe a chronograph is crucial, but it does save time and rounds sent. I used to copy a velocity for a particular bullet weight in a particular cartridge from somewhere online, plug it into a solver, get a solid 100yd zero then true the velocity at 500yds, i then would go out to about 1k yds and adjust the BC which is usually within .10 and I'd be good. Now to find out if your ammo has low SDs which is important to achieve 1st round impacts at about the cartridges transconic zone and below it's important.
100% agree with you on this and the process you described is in line with how I operated for a long time when I got into long range shooting. I have found since then however a chronograph really helps make things quicker and for me at least increases my confidence in the data I'm using.
I do not..... I want to get one though and give it a try. I used to have one maybe 7-10 years ago and didn't feel like it offered much over the shooter ap. Current kestrels have so much more capability I really want to see how a new version would help my shooting.
It looks like you are using a tpost to hang the targets, but how is the hook attached to the tpost, and who makes it? Is there a recommended steel thickness?
Check out jc steel targets. They have a t post hook style target hanger and slotted hook targets that I run. Great setup that’s never given me any issues. Thickness, I think I run 3/8 on my targets over 1000 yds. Closer targets are a mix of 3/8 and 1/2.
Given I am always shooting alone I don’t use a spotting scope. I had a leupold spotter maybe 10 years ago but sold it and really haven’t ever felt the need to replace it.
Can’t wait for part three! Loving this series. Loving this channel.
Part 3 is scheduled to drop tomorrow morning! Stay tuned!
