Oh I really liked that! I love the landscapes that seem impressionistic. And what a great idea to paint the first image that comes up in pixabay. And the google earth too. You have such a depth to your style and I love the titles you put on some of the pages. I probably should try doing some hand lettering on mine. I do for pet portraits. (The name). Wish I was with yall in La Gamora. Maybe next year. Right now I’m taking care of my sick husband. 🤒 Pray for me. lol I’ve banished him to the bedroom, but he keeps coughing all over me when I check on him. 😷 Much love to you and Margot. ❤
Good ideas. I certainly put too much pressure on myself to do a "proper" painting. I started a sketch and messing about book at New Year. Seems to be working.
This is great inspiration, thank you! I get decision paralysis and can't decide what to draw/paint. Google Street view is such a fun idea when you want to travel but can't (speaking of, I hope you're all having a wonderful time). And I'm definitely going to be using the masters' works as learning tools. P.S. WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN! (Or whatever you call it.) This PSA brought to you by a medical coder who has seen some things.
I really enjoyed your "tour." I, personally, love black and white drawing, sketching or pen and ink. Therefore, those were of particular interest. Just a comment on the lettering...I loved it. You should add that to a tutorial sometime. I started calligraphy before the kind of art I do now. If I can, I add it to my art as often as possible. Thank you!
This is amazing creativity!!! Loved it all... especially line & wash with names of towns... beautiful lettering!!! Cute painting of children!!! Girl with an umbrella... LOR painting!!! I need to start painting again... it's been almost 2 years... waiting for your new paints!!! Bought some Kuretake and Paul Rubens to help get me going! Thank you!!! God bless you & Margot with love from a California Gramma ❤️ 😅🎉
Very impressive. At first when I started painting, I used to sketch daily. Also, had to spend many hours in hospital OPD s for several years, it was the best way to keep calm. But somehow lost the habit. Am inspired to begin again. Thank you for another wonderful, wonderful Wednesday tutorial.
Thank you so much for this one! This is probably one of my favorites. All your work is inspiring and fun to work on. But I’m not that great of an artist yet so when you show sketchbook work, it shows I need to process but that not everything has to be “perfect“. And that it’s just good fun and playing with art.
Thank you so much for allowing us to peek into your sketchbook. Such a joy to behold and so inspirational. I need to work on these spontaneous watercolor paintings. I am in awe of your ability to unlock a beautiful finished painting from a few "random" splotches made at the outset. This kind of "seeing" is the hallmark of a truly skilled artist. It reminds me of the tale told by Vasari about Michelangelo, who purportedly said it was the job of the sculptor to free the piece from the block. Thank you--and enjoy the sun of La Gomera!
Lovely sketch of Robin Hood's Bay! Have you ever thought of running a retreat on the North Yorkshire coast? RHB, Whitby, Scarborough, lovely inland villages. Such a picturesque part of the UK (and some great music up there too!) 😊
How inspiring! You have such a variety in techniques and subjects yet somehow you have a unique style. As always it was a lot of fun to watch your video, thanks and have a great time in La Gomera! 😊 (will there be a tutorial on the ice skaters? I would love that! 😁)
Thanks for that sketchbook tour. So good to have practice & fun without the need for us to create a “masterpiece” every time right!! I enjoy my scrap book, ( and scrap paper ) sometimes just to keep my pen on the move practicing lines , and marks, circles, & arches in fact anything ! Jim uk
I really enjoyed that journey through your sketchbook. Your ability to be in two places at once due to an identical twin, teleportation or dare I say "Time Travel" (has to be one of those) so you can inspire more people in art is miraculous! Buy some decent shirts while vacationing eh mate🤣
Terrific video. So nice to see your level of skill. I keep a sketch book but never realized the level it could be taken to. I'll keep striving to get close to your level. Just wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
I am loving this trip through your sketch book. It's so interesting. Reminds me to continue to sketch each day no matter if it's just normal every day scenes.
I think that was the first album I bought too. Still love it. So many great images of Bowie on the net. I may start a watercolour sketchbook that’s just Bowie portraits. How great would that be….and just maybe eventually I’ll be able to do one that actually looks like him 🤣 I enjoyed having a look through your sketchbook. Great idea about Google street view too ❤️
Thank you so much for doing this it was fun and I love all you sketches they are so amazing and some funny. Love the fairy house, goat cars towns etc. LOL I am motivated to get my sketch book out and leave it out so I practice more..Thank you so much and happy vaca.
Paul, that was a tutorial in itself . I learned so much from it. Your processes are simplified . I suspect that even j ,m.w. Turner would have been inspired by it.😊
Fabulous, Paul! Thanks for giving us a peak into your personal sketchbook and for showing us how you try things out. Your people sketches are very inspiring. Honestly, I have not thought about using Google Earth for sketching but that's brilliant! I suppose it is also good to use for scoping out a good spot to do plein aire sketching someplace, or of course, armchair touring. Thanks again and have a great time wherever you are!
Thank you for sharing your sketchbook with us. It's a very inspiring video that makes me want to grab my own sketchbook and practice, and it's been far too long since I did that. Thank you!
Vielen Dank Paul. Ich liebe Skizzenbuchtouren. Es sind viele interessante Szenen. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir der VW-Käfer. Ich wünsche euch noch einen schönen Aufenthalt. Liebe Grüsse aus der Schweiz. Christa
Hello Paul, thank you once more. I live in Provence and am surprised to discover you came here. I would love you to teach some time round here 🙏 Pleaaase 😛
Thank you so much ! I was looking at a village in Switzerland on street view and wondered if it would be acceptable to sketch off the computer. I guess I'll give it a try now.
This was a lovely video to watch, Paul. It proves you don't need to produce masterpieces all the time to have fun. It will help me to stop myself from being such a perfectionist. Thank you 😊
What a treat. It encourages me to branch out. Loved your Van Gogh styled boat, such an interesting technique. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your holiday.
Really enjoyed that. I love my sketchbook but sometimes do something I love and mess it up when I do it as a painting 😢😢. The duck you painted was in fact a Great Crested Grebe, if you have time, look into their courtship ritual, it's truly magical.
A very interesting tour through your sketchbook. I liked the ballpoint pen and wash ones in particular, perhaps you could do a video on that? Or the Lord of the Rings style tree? I really must use my book more, instead of only focusing on the finished ‘product’. Thanks again.
Thank you Paul, this has inspired me to do some more sketching. I grew up a Westham supporter back when Bobby Moore was captain & team players were Cyde Best, Trevor Brooking, Pop Robson, Geoff Hurst to name just a few. Happy painting hope you are having a great time on holiday.
Hello Paul. Thank you for posting something for us. I love your Tour de Sketchbook! However my heart dropped when you said there will not be any posting for next week, oh dear. I also wanted to tell you that your "disaster" would be my most prized drawing! ha ha. Take care, see you soon 🤗
Вітаю вас, Пауль. Чудово, що ви показали цей скетчбук, це завжди так цікаво. Це як особистий щоденник, але з малюнками . Мені дуже сподобалося переглянути його 💛💙
As usual, I have QUESTIONS. This was so inspirational and full of practical suggestions, I have saved it to my playlist of a few dozen "saved art" videos. 1. Perhaps I missed it, but what was the brand, size, etc. of this sketchbook? I have found it is very difficult to find one that will take multiple washes and the (too) much water that I use. 2. Were the paintings done alla prima, or in divided sessions? 3. Did the two page spreads have the same time "limit"? The line and wash are so well observed and rendered!
Thank you for sharing your sketch book! I think it just proves what I’ve known all along- you’re such a wonderful artist and can paint most anything! Figures, faces, landscapes, buildings, cars, etc - you can do it all!
If my figures were as proficient as yours, I’d be quite chuffed with myself! Mine always end up looking like aliens so I’ve decided I’m not a People Person! I love your line & wash pieces. Thank you for sharing, enjoy your sunshine as East Sussex is currently very soggy! (Bring some home with you, please!)
Thank you for showing us your sketchbook Paul. You’re very good at drawing and painting so many different subjects, I’m full of admiration. The figures and faces are especially inspiring. I’m going away for a short break and will again take my sketchbook with me. There’s always something to capture even my husband asleep! 😅
Amazing video as usual, always waiting for the his beautiful content. All the sketches that Paul has shown are excellent and show the skill he posses 💗. @Paul can you please tell the sketchbook barnd you used here. Thanks
Ohhh yes I love 💕 going through your sketchbook tour! I really enjoyed the first double page landscape that you shared 😊. I have always used sketchbooks for my artwork from the beginning of my art journey. The first two years I was using pulp watercolor wire bound sketchbooks before moving to better quality cotton paper sketchbooks. They were a lot less expensive & intimidating than using individual sheets of top quality cotton paper I thought as a beginner. Since gaining more confidence & experience I have been using more expensive paper now. Although I have yet to try my block of the great standard Arches. I might give it a go soon 💕😉. Have a wonderful teaching holiday with Margot & friends Paul!
Hi Paul, I’m a fan of the great David Bowie and saw him in concert in the early 70’s and again with Tina Turner they were amazing. So glad that you are a fan as well as a brilliant artist, thanks for all the tutorials. Judy.
I was very impressed at the land scape on two pages. I would love to see this as a tutorial, please.😊 Can't beat a bit of Ziggy. Thanks Paul that was very inspiring I need to get my Seawhites out.😊
Google earth views, what a great idea! Also, I think your figures look very realistic. I enjoyed all the purple and teal, I love that color combo too! Take care!
Thank you, dear Paul!
Loved this 🌷🎨

I will take my sketchbook out for sure! Thank you for the inspiration!
I loved your sketchbook! Made me more motivated to have one! 🎉😊
Fantastic Paul ❤🖌thanks for sharing your fun sketch book
Loved it...Very inspiring
Your lettering is exquisite! Loved those florals too! Especially the one that looked like morning glories!
This is amazing creativity!!! Loved it all... especially line & wash with names of towns... beautiful lettering!!! Cute painting of children!!! Girl with an umbrella... LOR painting!!! Great stuff Paul
Inspiring as always. Can't wait to see you and Margot for a week of painting and music in Ibiza this coming April.

Your sketchbook is a masterpiece--thanks for sharing it.
